Closing Remarks Message from the Founder

April 28th, 2018

As the Chancellor & Founder of Global Youth Leaders, I am very honoured and privi- leged to welcome all the participants and attendees of the 9th Annual Global Youth Lead- ers Forum.

I am extremely pleased that Global Youth Leaders over the years have allowed promising youths in the GTA to engage with their communities and display leadership qualities. I am confident that someday they will steer Canada in the right direction and ensure that the future is in good hands, and proud that Global Youth Leaders can serve as a stepping stone. Indeed, the world soon will need leaders who can tackle tough issues beyond their immediate social, environmental, economic, and communal understandings, and in or- der to do so, members of GYL must think globally and act locally. In the past nine years, GYL has achieved much through its leadership programs, volun- teerism, and initiatives both local and abroad that fostered the leadership skills of the young leaders and build a compassionate and inclusive world. This year’s Forum will not only showcase the achievements, but also provide a connective platform to create dis- cussions and shape discourse on the challenges and tasks that can be overcome by youth leaders.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Charles Chang, the Secretary-General of GYL and Charles Kim, the former Secretary-General. I would also like to thank all par- ents and directors who have rendered me unlimited support and the members of Global Youth Leaders for participating and putting in great work to better our communities and the world. Let us continue to work together and create a peace loving and compassionate world for our future generations.

Yours truly,

Dr. Raymond Cho Founder & Chancellor Global Youth Leaders

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER

On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to everyone attending the 9th Annual Global Youth Leaders Forum.

I would also like to say how proud I am of the young people who are part of the GYL. They have chosen to use their talents to transform our world into a better place, rather than just accepting things as they are.

6 Message from the President of the KCCA

Congratulatory Message

Daniel Lee, KCCA President

To the Global Youth Leaders, I would like to extend my warmest regards and congratulations to the Global Youth Leaders (GYL) on their 9th annual forum. We are all fortunate to live in Canada, a country where diversity is one of many wonderful key characteristics that makes us proud to say we are Canadians. Even better, we live in Toronto, a city well-known for its multiculturalism, a place where you can experience diversity first-hand just by taking a walk around the neighbourhood. This makes Toronto the ideal environment to develop future leaders not only locally, but also globally. Developing leadership at a young age is vital as it helps not only on individual growth but also on growth as a citizen of today’s global society. Since its establishment in 2009, the GYL have been able to provide our youth an invaluable opportunity to be involved in their immediate communities and beyond, giving them the training and skills that would aid them in their future endeavors through various activities: speech clubs, ICCN conferences, volunteerism, and global outreach. Through the enriching experience under the GYL, the previous members become mentors to new members, and this process continues making the organization a place for youth to learn from other youth. I am grateful to the GYL, for providing our youth the network and tools needed for them to unleash their potential and develop as individuals who will continue to make a positive change to the people around them, no matter where they go. To all the GYL members, as you grow older and build your future, whatever it may be, I sincerely hope that you would never forget the relationships you have forged, the skills you have learned, and the positive impacts you have made to the people you have met. Thank you and I wish everyone in the GYL the best and continued success for years to come. Sincerely,

Daniel Lee President of KCCA

7 MENTORS & EXECUTIVES Charles Chang Secretary-General of GYL

Charles Chang is one of GYL’s most prized treasures. Despite his hard work as a professional lawyer at his own private practice, Charles Advocacy Professional Corporation , he puts in his all for the sake of the GYL youth. Thanks to Charles’s constant mentorship in aspects of speech and professional etiquette, there has been a noticeable improvement in all of our members. GYL’s very own ‘Speech Club’ has only Charles to thank- -with it being created and led all by him, each grade group has been inspired by Charles’ methods of teaching speech improvement through direct coaching and also by watching several videos of famous speeches throughout history. GYL is truly proud to have Charles as a leader and mentor of our group and we do not know what we would have done without him for the 2017-2018. Thank you Charles!

Sam Kim President Sam Kim was honoured to be the President of GYL for the 2017-2018 year. He attends Ursula Franklin Academy (Grade 11) in the High Park Area and does a number of extra-curricular activities other than GYL such as playing on a rep volleyball team, taking piano lessons, and being a part of many school clubs such as the ukulele team and many more. He hopes to see many new faces next year and for the GYL body to grow as one in order to better the GTA community.

Jennifer Choi Vice-President Jennifer Choi was the Vice President of GYL for 2017-2018. She attends Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill in grade 11, who strived to help GYL grow to implement its name further out in the GTA and gain various experiences from the activities provided. When she is not active in GYL, she is involved in extracurricular activities such as learning flute, learning french and a part of numerous school clubs such as Cancer Society Club. She hopes for the continuous further development of GYL with many new faces next year.

8 GYL SAMULNORI

GYL was lucky to have our Samulnori Team this year, keeping the energy of the whole group alive with their amazing percussion! They performed exquisitely at various events, such as at our annual Castleview and Cummerlodge Nursing Home Christmas Concerts. The Samulnori team is always a hit, with each year bringing Baek Choong-Heun forward a new, and even-more vibrant performance. The GYL Samulnori is definitely a lightning of cultural pride that keeps GYL’s overall energy flowing, with our Korean roots being brought out with the help of these traditional sounds and beats. Thank you to our amazing instructor, Mr. Baek Choong-Heun.

9 String & Band Ensemble

Kim Sung-Joong

Thanks to our very own String and Band Ensemble, GYL’s 2018 year has been filled with wonderful music. We were very lucky to have such talented young musicians willing to collaborate together to perform as one group. Each event was filled with joy as the ensemble performed beautiful music such as ‘Hungarian Dance’, ‘Jingle Bells’, and many, many more! Progress and improvement was a seen quality in all of the ensemble members, as they practiced very hard. Their formidable performances were magical to hear. GYL is a great opportunity to bring out one’s musical potential, no matter what level of experience they may have! Thank you to Mr. Kim Sung-Joong for being an amazing instructor & conductor!

10 Homework Club

GYL’s ‘Homework Club’ was a tremendous success for the 2017-2018 year. At both our ‘Richmond Hill H-Mart’ location and our ‘North York Centre’, members collaborated together to help younger students and each other with their school studies. By problem solving together, students could realize the joys of teamwork and the great outcomes it brings. Thank you to our amazing representatives Esther Lee (North York Centre) and Kathryn Lee (H-Mart). Despite some complications that occurred this year due to the construction of our regular homework club location, the leaders and reps did an amazing job to find a new location! We hope to have another successful year of hard studying and tutoring for the 2018-2019 year.

11 CASTLEVIEW & CUMMER Castleview Wychwood Towers Every Friday GYL members did their best to please LODGE the residents of Castleview by playing them movies and giving them drinks/snacks. Some days consisted of only 3 volunteers; others 10. In any case, the show went on.

Volunteers worked formidably to do whatever they could for the elders and residents of Castleview. Seeing their daily struggles was heartbreaking and it just made us that much more passionate to serve them! Some of the most crowd-pleasing movies included Arrival (2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and many, many more!

It was an amazing feeling to see how much fun the residents were having and we are looking forward to another year filled with lots of movies and happiness.

Cummer Lodge Held every Monday night, GYL members volunteered for the residents of Cummerlodge Long-Term Care Nursing Home. Due to Castleview Movie Night’s huge hit amongst the Home’s residents, GYL decided to expand our ‘Nursing Home Movie Night Program’ to other locations: and so the Cummerlodge Movie Night was born this very year (September 2017).

As expected, like its sister-program, the residents of Cummerlodge went wild for the Monday movie night, always showing up. Volunteers realized that the residents not only came to the movie nights, but they looked forward to them . This just inspired all of the members to work even harder and volunteer that much more passionately, not just because they had to , but because they wanted to.

12 Speech Club

Thanks to Charles Chang, our very own Secretary-General, and professional lawyer, each grade had the pleasure of learning all about speech and public speaking. Public- speaking is a fundamental skill that is essential to success, especially in our society today.

Due to Charles’ passion to see all the GYL members succeed, he implemented this club that helps us to practice these very speaking skills. The club was divided by grade, with each grade having a total of four, 2-hour blocks of sessions with Charles.

Through constructive criticism, members were exposed to their own speaking flaws. Although to some, this may seem like a terrifying, anxiety-provoking thing, this was not the case at all. By recognizing these flaws in one’s speaking, measures could be taken to fix said things and train oneself to improve .

That is the true essence of Charles’ speech club. Truly a great activity group that we all hope to see again for the 2018-2019 year.
