SPORTFISHING AND UNDERWATER CLUB

MARCH 2018 NEWSLETTER PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hello all and welcome to those who are new members. PLATINUM We certainly have had some warm spells of weather of late, as matter of fact I SPONSORS am working with a bunch of Australians and I never thought I would hear them complaining about the heat in NZ, its usually the rain and wind so it

must be hot.

Unfortunately I have to report that on the 6th March 2018 a New Plymouth Sportfishing and Underwater Club Weighmaster, Euan McLachlan falsified a

weigh sheet and the weigh board, the fish weighed 75kgs and was recorded as

90.3kg. This is totally unacceptable, it undermines the New Plymouth Sportfishing and Underwater Clubs creditability and integrity. As a result Euan was suspended from Weighmaster duties, and asked to return his

NPSUC key.

The club rooms has been steady the lucky Membership draw was recently won by Stephanie Clark so congrats to you, the Tui wild joker is up to 1300.00

Our bar staff have been on the ball and meeting all targets around sales. They

were very busy over the Cockies Classic and West Coast One Base and did a

great job with lots of positive comments received, well done to them all.

The van is working well with positive comments from drivers and passengers,

however we are still wanting more drivers for the roster.

The building committee have been meeting and going over the designs, ideas part of the upgrade will be lighting as well so we can come up with a budget

price.

Five out of eight days fished in the nationals, not as good as the last 2 years with eight out of eight, congratulations to Ian Steele and team on top boat and

all winners in the Nationals.

Guns & Tackle landed the first short bill spear fish congratulations to Woolly

and team.

New Plymouth boats and their teams did well at the recent 2018 Bonze lures

skins competition with Brad Ravens Serenity team taking out the heaviest fish of the comp 185KG blue marlin, and Ken Murphy’s Waikiore got the last tagged fish of the comp, Ken also dropped 5 other fish.

GOLD Brad Dent and his team landed a 208kg blue marlin at Waihau Bay congrats to all. SPONSORS On a sad note one of life members Dave Dannefaerd’s wife Juliet passed away so our thoughts are with the Dannefaerd family.

Tight lines and good luck over the next few weeks, I am sure the game fish

will be around for a little longer yet

CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT

Welcome to this month’s newsletter, and what a hectic month it has been. Again this year we had the MICO Plumbing , plumbers competition, approximately 160 anglers and again another very successful competition,

this comp continuing to grow each year with numbers entering.

Next we had the Brian Martin Contracting sponsored Nationals, a great competition, fished mate against mate, team against team across . This year is the first for a little while that we did not get to fish all of the 8 days here off Port . The fish were a little scarce also meaning the results were not quite what we would have wished for as a club.

Following immediately on from the Nationals we had the Ian Roebuck Crane

Hire sponsored Take A Kid Fishing, with support from the New Plymouth Police and the Blue Lite program they run. Again a massively successful day with 194 kids taking part and all going home with a prize.

th Then onto the Cockies Classic Fishing Competition, in its 19 year, and although down a little this year in terms of numbers, 510 anglers, this competition continues to deliver. A special thanks to Mike Green for his continued input/support of this major undertaking. Next year will be a beauty, being the 20th running of this event.

Last but not least for this newsletter, we have just fished the Taranaki Hunting and Fishing sponsored West Coast One Base competition, and although we only managed to fish 2 of the 3 days, and the marlin were somewhat elusive, 244 anglers on 74 boats tried their hardest to win some outstanding prizes on offer. The winning fish was a weighed marlin of 118 KG to a team from Wellington fishing aboard the boat Fishy 1. Well done to them.

th On the 24 March we have the Active Electrical competition, followed by rd th the 3 bottom fishing comp, the Kilwell Competition on the 7 April.

Just a reminder to skippers re the day memberships, these only cost $15 to obtain, and if these are purchased via texting a committee member PRIOR to SILVER leaving the harbour if the club is not open, or purchasing the night before SPONSORS your intended fishing trip, then should the angler that has the day

membership weigh or tag a marlin, this will go towards the boat tally for the season and the weighing of the fish will be complimentary.

All the best and see you on the water,

Captain Trout

DIVING REPORT

With a few storms coming through in last month there hasn’t been much clean seas or chances to go out diving, here’s hoping March brings us some better weather. Good time to check your gear is good to go, so when the sea clears up you won’t have any hold ups.
