HILLS PRAISES VETS AFTER PEARL INJURY Trainer Charlie Hills yesterday paid tribute to the officials responsible for dealing with the ill-fated Gray Pearl (GB) (Excellent Art {GB}) at Newmarket on Sunday. Raymond Mould's filly, who was a promising third in the G2 Rockfel S. on only her second start in October, was euthanized after sustaining a spinal cord injury when becoming stuck under the starting stalls ahead of the G1 1000 Guineas. "The post-mortem has been done, and it came back exactly as the vets said at the time," Hills said. "It is nice that they were right in their judgment, as unfortunate as it was that they had to put her down. The vets made the right decisions, and the stalls handlers did a very good job. By the time I got down there after five to 10 minutes, the decision had already been made. It's very sad, but that's racing and is one of those things."

O’BRIEN PICKS UP BAN Joseph O'Brien was yesterday handed a four-day suspension at Chester which threatens to rule him out of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas. After being found guilty of excessive use of the whip on the Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Betterbetterbetter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the Ballydoyle number one is due to be out of action May 23-26 but can apply to the British Horseracing Authority to defer the ban as Group 1 racing is scheduled.

CHESHIRE OAKS cont. Dr Marwan Koukash=s love of Chester saw the increasingly influential owner persuade trainer Mark Johnston to try Good Morning Star in this established Epsom Oaks trial despite the filly=s modest race record. Like a certain 1000 Guineas heroine, she had taken a few tries to get off the mark and finally managed the feat in a handicap over 10 furlongs on Lingfield=s Polytrack Jan. 18. And similar to many of her stable=s winter runners, the diminutive bay has benefitted from that early conditioning, but she suggested she had only limited capabilities when third in a 12-furlong handicap at Beverley Apr. 18. Racing in rear early under Franny Norton, she still had plenty of ground to make up on the final turn as Joseph O=Brien sent favored Betterbetterbetter to the lead. Grinding down that rival in the shade of the post, she upset Ballydoyle=s current momentum to provide another eyebrow-raising result on the European racing scene. AI did think it was a very open race beforehand, but we didn=t expect to win with a 50-1 shot,@ winning trainer Mark Johnston commented. AShe didn=t get the best of breaks and was boxed in, but Franny knows his way out of a pocket around here. We=ll have to go home and take stock, as if it wasn=t for Dr Marwan, she wouldn=t be running here. His obsession with Chester means he would rather win this than the Epsom Oaks, and we took a chance, as she was the best we had.@ Betterbetterbetter=s trainer Aidan O=Brien said, AWe were very happy with her, as she had become very lazy at home.
