God’s House By: Andrea F. Harkins

Dirt floor with homemade rugs. Simple wooden table. Burning candle. Bible. . Quiet fire burning brightly. Simple furnishings. Warm blankets. A hot drink. The smell of bread baking. A bed of four posts. A feathered and weathered mattress where only He can sleep. A lamp, dusty from years, but working. A simple window shade to block the daylight. Comfort. . Peace.

I guess if I had to describe God’s house, it might look and feel like this. I can’t imagine it being a lavish setting, a mansion, or a big decorative building, even though that is what He deserves. I can’t see Him in a cold, contemporary dwelling, or a place that holds things that would never be used. There is no cell phone in his hand and no television blaring. He has perhaps a pencil and paper where he can sketch or write or share his thoughts. He holds some wood for carving and a small knife. He is a carpenter whose hands are calloused from all the good deeds He has to perform day in, day out, on the lives of all his disciples. He reads a prayer fervently like a poem. He has an expression that no one has ever seen. He sits all alone quietly. His eyes can pierce or mend, brighten, heal, or bring to light. Outside, in the sky, His stars sit high and patiently, bowing down to him obediently according to the sun and moon. Time has no limits. Thoughts have no boundaries. The sky and stars have no end. Like Santa’s huge naughty and nice list, he reviews the long list of that constantly flow to him. He begins his prayers, one for each of you. His mind and heart are so wide, he can take it all in. No dream is too big, no request for forgiveness is insignificant, and no prayer is left unanswered. When he is finished, he rests. Without the walls of time, he can accomplish all. Some never recognize what He has done for them. But, it matters not. He’s done as promised and listened and prayed and touched each willing person with His grace. Eternity engulfs him. His job is never done. His prayers are never ending. His compassion is always available. His healing powers are always in tune. There is no need to sweep the mud-dried floors, or mend the ancient shades. There is no reason for a lightbulb to turn his presence on and off. His hands are tired but he easily writes his thoughts for another day, when someone will find them and read and finally understand.

Where I live, I have a lot of things. Things I don’t really need, but they make my life comfortable. I’ve lived without in the past and I don’t ever want to go there again. Yet, the house I’ve imagined for God seems perfectly right and full of blessings. Sometimes in nothing, is everything. There is freedom in not counting time and in not having possessions. There is divine power in just believing. There is simplicity in praying more. As I gradually accept God’s house as a small component of who I am, as I realize that my fears and my anxieties have no reason, I will be able to let go of it all with a single breath across the small flickering flame of a candle in God’s house. Forgiveness is swished away with the hope of being able to start all over again. Whatever your version of God’s house is, it does not matter. It is whatever and wherever you want it to be. The important thing is that you go inside, sit, reflect, accept, enjoy, believe, and listen. It’s a place like no other, one to which you are not accustomed. Therein exists no jealousy, spite or anger, no competition, drama or insecurity. God’s house is forever available. Today, as you set out in your day, step foot in God’s house. Fold your hands or say a prayer or think a powerful thought. Know that God’s house is as big as necessary to fit everyone, yet it never feels crowded or overwhelming. It is open to all and has no obstacles. I promise, you can find as big a space as you will ever need. God’s house is all about you. It is whatever you choose your vision of God to be. It is whatever makes sense to you and what- ever you need. For all of us, though, no matter what form it takes, God’s house is real and God sits there waiting, patiently. I can see my next step upon God’s dirt floor, where the dust has settled. I will gladly sweep and dust and make things right for God. For all he does for me, it is the least that I can do. There are no barriers to entry, no stipulations, and no rules, just a big wooden door with a latch. Lift the latch ever so slowly, walk through, and feel the overwhelming power of God that awaits you. Bring your sins, your fears, and your pains to the only place where you will always be loved and accepted.

God’s house.
