The French word renaissance is translated as “rebirth” and is described by many as one of the most significant intellectual movements of our history. Whereas the Baroque period is described by many as a time of intense drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in art. By comparing and contrasting the works made in this period students gain a greater sense of the history of European art and the great minds behind it. Many notable artists, musicians, scientists, and writers emerged from this period that are still relished and discussed today. Artists and great thinkers such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo Meisi da Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Dante Alighieri, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Galileo Galilei were working in their respective fields creating beautiful and innovative works. Many of these permanent collection works were created in the traditional fashion of egg tempera and oil painting which the students will get an opportunity to try in our studio. -

Reproduced by permission of the publisher. Compare two accounts of Caravaggio’s personality: Giovanni Bellori’s brief 1672 text and Howard Hibbard’s Caravaggio, published in 1983. Bellori says that Caravaggio, like the ancient sculptor Demetrius, cared more for naturalism than for beauty. Choosing models, not from antique sculpture, but from the passing crowds, he aspired ‘only to the glory of colour.’1 Caravaggio abandoned his early Venetian manner in favor of ‘bold shadows and a great deal of black’ because of ‘his turbulent and contentious nature.’ The artist expressed himself in his work: ‘Caravaggio’s way of working corresponded to his physiognomy and appearance. He had a dark complexion and dark eyes, black hair and eyebrows and this, of course, was reflected in his painting ‘The curse of his too naturalistic style was that ‘soon the value of the beautiful was discounted.’ Some of these claims are hard to take at face value. Surely when Caravaggio composed an altarpiece he did not just look until ‘it happened that he came upon someone in the town who pleased him,’ making ‘no effort to exercise his brain further.’ While we might think that swarthy people look brooding more easily than blonds, we are unlikely to link an artist’s complexion to his style. But if portions of Bellori’s text are alien to us, its structure is understandable. -

Este parece haber pretendido al propio trono bizantino, debido a su matrimonio con la hija del Emperador latino de Constantinopla. Ello fue uno de los moviles de la Quinta Cruzada que dirigio rey Andres con el beneplacito del Papado. El trabajo ofre- ce una vision de conjunto de esta Cruzada y del itinerario del rey Andres, quien volvio desengafiado a su Reino. Summary: The main subject matter of this research is an appro- ach to Hungary, during the reign of Andrew Il, and its participation in the Fifth Crusade. To achieve such a goal a well supported study of king Andrew's ambitions in the Balkan region as in the Bizantine Empire is depicted. His marriage with a daughter of the Latin Emperor of Constantinople seems to indicate the origin of his pre- tensions. It also explains the support of the Roman Catholic Church to this Crusade, as well as it offers a detailed description of king Andrew's itinerary in Holy Land. -

What Was ‘The Enlightenment’? We hear about it all the time. It was a pivotal point in European history, paving the way for centuries of history afterward, but what was ‘The Enlightenment’? Why is it called ‘The Enlightenment’? Why did the period end? The Enlightenment Period is also referred to as the Age of Reason and the “long 18th century”. It stretched from 1685 to 1815. The period is characterized by thinkers and philosophers throughout Europe and the United States that believed that humanity could be changed and improved through science and reason. Thinkers looked back to the Classical period, and forward to the future, to try and create a trajectory for Europe and America during the 18th century. It was a volatile time marked by art, scientific discoveries, reformation, essays, and poetry. It begun with the American War for Independence and ended with a bang when the French Revolution shook the world, causing many to question whether ideas of egalitarianism and pure reason were at all safe or beneficial for society. Opposing schools of thought, new doctrines and scientific theories, and a belief in the good of humankind would eventually give way the Romantic Period in the 19th century. What is Enlightenment? Philosopher Immanuel Kant asked the self-same question in his essay of the same name. In the end, he came to the conclusion: “Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason!” This was an immensely radical statement for this time period. Previously, ideas like philosophy, reason, and science – these belonged to the higher social classes, to kings and princes and clergymen. -

Mannerist Architecture and the Baroque In this lecture I want to discuss briefly the nature of Mannerist architecture and then begin to consider baroque art. We have already paid some attention to Mannerist painting and sculpture; and have seen how in the work of painters like Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino and Parmigianino; and sculptors like Giovanni Bologna and Cellini, that after 1527, classical forms came to be used in a spirit alien to them; each artist developing a highly personal style containing capricious, irrational and anti-classical effects. Although the term Mannerism was first applied to painting before it came to be used to describe the period style between 1527 and 1600; it is possible to find similar mannerist qualities in the architecture of the time. And again it is Michelangelo whose work provides, as it were, a fountainhead of the new style. Rosso’s Decent from the Cross, which we have taken as one of the first signs of Mannerist strain and tension in the High Renaissance world, was painted in 1521. Three years later Michelangelo designed his Laurentian Library,* that is in 1524. It was designed to house the library of the Medicis; and we may take it as the first important building exhibiting Mannerist features.* We can best consider these features by comparing the interior of the library with the interior of an early Renaissance building such as Brunelleschi’s S. Lorenzo. Consider his use of columns. In Brunelleschi they are free standing. When he uses pilasters they project out from a wall as you expect a buttress to. -

Morse’s Gallery of the Louvre In an effort to educate his American audience, Samuel Morse published Descriptive Catalogue of the Pictures. Thirty-seven in Number, from the Most Celebrated Masters, Copied into the “Gallery of the Louvre” (New York, 1833). The updated version of Morse’s key to the pictures presented here reflects current scholarship. Although Morse never identified the people represented in his painting, this key includes the possible identities of some of them. Exiting the gallery are a woman and little girl dressed in provincial costumes, suggesting the broad appeal of the Louvre and the educational benefits it afforded. PEOPLE 19. Based on the analysis of the source base, a direct connection of the appearance of glamour with the emergence of a new elite in the political arena was proven. The article has analysed the manifestations of glamour in interior design; it presents an assessment of this phenomenon and examples of the modern interior in the style of glamour. Keywords: glamour, interior design, philosophical and culturological phenomenon Streszczenie W artykule zostały przeanalizowane źródła szczególnego zjawiska splendoru (glamour) w różnych dziedzinach życia człowieka i w różnych odmianach sztuki. Na podstawie przeanalizowania bazy źród- łowej udowodniono bezpośrednie powiązanie powstania splendoru ze stanowieniem na politycznej arenie nowej elity. Przeanalizowano przejawy splendoru w designie wnętrz oraz przedstawiono oce- nę tego zjawiska. INTRODUCTION In the present day, in the stylistic diversity of modern interiors, a separate ‘glamour’ style has emerged as an identification of refinement and treasures, and a demonstration of the social status of a customer and his or her personal image. The use of modernised elements of the styles of previous epochs which personified magnificence and pomposity became widespread.
