Loyal Seaholm students ventured out into a raging blizzard last Monday, Jan. 10 in a brave attempt to get to school. After awakening to a snow covered world, Birmingham parents, students and teachers listened to long lists of area school closings but Birmingham was one of the few on the "open" list. Almost 300 restless, rebelious Seaholmites roamed the halls during first hour and part of second. A few diehards even attended class but many teachers had been stopped by the "inclement weather" and had not arrived at school. A count was taken to determine the number of students at school and finally at 9:20 a.m. an announcement was made to "officially" close school. The superintendent's office spokesman explained that the reason for the delayed closing of school was due to the feeling that, early in the morning it was thought that schools could operate. By 9:15 a.m., however, it was obvious that not enough teachers, administrators and other staff members h ad reported to keep the schools open. Thus the decision to close. Once again students ventured out into the blinding snow — trekked through gigantic drifts and made their precarious way homeward or to local restaurants that were open for a delayed breakfast.
