OCTOBER Traversing the Olympics Monday, October 12, 7 pm 2009 Presented by: Steph Abegg

In 1974, Steph’s parents met while backpacking opposite directions along a trail in the Olympics; in 1975, they were married, and until Steph was born in 1983, they spent all their free time mountaineering and climbing. Steph’s dad’s PhD studies took the family to the Midwest, and she spent her childhood as the only kid in Indiana who owned an ice axe. In 1994, the family seized an opportunity to move to British Columbia, and soon summer adventures in the mountains were a routine part of life for the family. The last couple summers have been spent alpine climbing and doing rigorous high traverses in western North America, mainly in the , but also in the Olympics. Steph’s camera always comes along, regardless of how many other items are left out of the pack to save weight. One of her specialties is night photography, as she loves the potential for creativity and the technical difficulty. Steph is currently a grad student in Civil Engineering at the University of and hopes to have many summers ahead of climbing, photography, and writing about it. Silver Lake Submitted by Steve Osburn Photos courtesy of Steve Osburn

Nancy and I went on our (almost) yearly pilgrimage to Silver Lake. We went via the way trail, which is much shorter than over Townsend, but it also has had a good deal of downed trees over which you must scramble. There has been some trail maintenance, but much more is needed.

Within the first 100 feet or so, we found a pigmy owl, and he stayed around long enough for me to get a good pic- ture! Other than scrambling over logs, the hike from the car to the main trail went fine, and we made good time. The lake has seen less water than past years, and had more algae in the water than usual. Unfortunately, this also has killed some fish and frogs, a number of which could be seen around the shores. De- spite this, the lake still is a great destination, and a number of people were fishing there during the weekend. After making camp, we scrambled to the saddle above the lake, and then to the ridgeline to the east. The weather was good, but we were expecting some rain, and we wanted to see the views before the weather moved in. We caught some nice views of the Kitsap Peninsula and beyond, as well as views of Mount Constance and several peaks in the Olympics. (continued on next page)

6 Trip Report

(continued from previous page)

That evening it began to rain, so we put up a tarp and enjoyed reading under it via candle lan- tern. Well, we didn't read the entire time - half the entertain- ment was watching a group of 10 teenagers camped in the meadow, standing in the rain, telling stories and having a good time! They left the next day.

The next morning included low clouds that hid mountaintops and provided a mystical appear- ance to the peaks around the lake. We decided to scramble to the saddle and peaks to the east again, but this time the view was much different - from the top we could see low clouds blowing in from the south, and disappearing as they hit the saddle and ridge. It made for some interesting pictures and a great lunch spot. The Hood Canal and Puget Sound areas we saw the day before were all gone - replaced by low clouds and fog to the east, but still some nice views to the north towards Sequim.

That night we shared the lake with four other pairs - a father/daughter, a father/son, and two couples. It was fun to watch the fathers try to teach their kids to fish. In the end, both kids found more pleasure in running around the meadow than fishing!

We headed out on Sunday a bit before noon - it was another nice day - and no clouds to be seen. We thought of going back up to the saddle and peaks, but decided it was time to end the pilgrimage and return home. All in all, another great hike.
