Interim president brings experience, steady hand

ecommended by then-President Larry C. Skogen, the State Board of Higher Education Rnamed Dave Clark interim president of Bismarck State College in October. He began his duties on Nov. 1 when Skogen began his term as interim chancellor of the University System. Skogen is expected to return to BSC when his contract ends June 30, 2015. Skogen noted in his endorsement letter that Clark was overwhelmingly mentioned as the logical choice for this appointment by all constituent groups on campus. “These endorsements speak volumes to the regard with which Dave is held by BSC students and colleagues.” Skogen also called Clark “a stalwart executive” and cited his many years of corporate, state and higher education experience. Clark has been at BSC for 24 years and has gained a broad campus perspective during that time. Both higher education and BSC are facing big changes – a new funding model, a vote that could change the structure of higher education in North Dakota, two major building projects on the BSC campus (the student union renovation and the Communications and Creative Arts Center), and year three of an aggressive BSC five-year strategic plan. It’s a full plate, and Clark is focused on keeping things on track. “I understand that the role of an interim is not to be transformative, but to keep the train moving, so I need to make the best decisions possible and keep looking forward,” he said. With change all around him, Clark’s steady hand will serve him – and BSC – well colleagues say. Tamara Barber, BSC interim executive vice president, has worked with Clark for years and cites his fair approach, level-headedness and the calming effect he has on people. “He’ll keep BSC moving forward with a sound, rational approach,” she noted. Past president of the BSC Foundation and current trustee Jim Christianson said Clark is dedicated to BSC and “ideally suited to lead the college during this period of growth.” continued on page 2

What you do as president is to take whatever you can get and try to make it better for the next president. And I did that.” He added from the perspective of retirement: “It’s such a delight to be a past president because I can just live in the glow of the success and glory.
