  • Sculpting a Play Sudhanva Deshpande Mala Hashmi As Dadi
Sculpting a Play Sudhanva Deshpande Mala Hashmi as Dadi ( grandmother) It happens inevitably. Whenever I mention that a play has been improvised, people tend to imagine that it is improvised in performance and they cannot believe that, because what they have seen seems like the performance of a fully-finished text. Even after I explain that 'improvisation' is only the technique one has used to evolve the play, a feeling of slight disbelief persists. It may have to do with the fact that the word 'improvisation', along with its near cousin `impromptu', carries connotations of something unplanned, unstructured, unorganized. Improvisations are, of course, all that, also pretty often chaotic, but it is possible to use this chaos to evolve texts. Through the maze of confusion, through the pulls and pressures every actor and director exerts on nebulous, barely-visible ideas, through false starts, speed-breakers, and dead 1 ends, through all this it is yet possible to create texts that are complex, multi-layered, sophisticated, and dramatic. I say this on the evidence of two plays that Jana Natya Manch (Janam) evolved in 1995, Artanaad ('A Cry of Anguish', a play on child sexual abuse) and Andhera Aftaab Mangega ('Darkness Will Beget the Dawn', in rough translation; a play on the lives of the working class in Delhi). I describe below the process we used to evolve Andhera. (I do realize, of course, that 'improvisation' has become something of a catchword in theatre, nearly a fashion, especially since the 1960s: everybody seems to be improvising. But that doesn't mean that the technique has lost all relevance, and in any case the uniqueness of an experience is not the only I lit, 'new' worker Shakeel as Badal becomes a 'soft' one when dealing with capital and a 'hard' one when dealing with labour.

The attraction was described as “living photographic pictures in life-sized reproductions” by Lumiere Brothers. It was called the cinematographe. The cinema was received in India like any one of the magic shows that were so popular with the audience of that time and era. After two weeks of the shows the Times of India carried a further announcement: At the desire of a large number of Bombay residents who have flocked recently in spite of bad weather to see the cinematographe, the patentee has obtained a fresh lease of Novelty Theatre for a few more nights. (Times of India) Marius Sestier, a representative of Paris-based Lumiere-Brothers, had perfected his process of ‘living photographic pictures” and had held the first public exhibition only a few months earlier in Paris on 28 of December 1895. The image which flickered in Bombay’s Watson Hotel on that evening became India’s first film show and hotel’s clientele which saw it formed the first audience. The day’s programme started with an item “Entry of cinematographe” introducing the new medium.

Chapter 2 A -A Historical Perspective on the Position of the Women in the Indian Society The history of the changing status of the Indian woman may be divided into the following six divisions- 1) The age of the Rigveda (From c.2500 B.C. to c.1500 B.C.) 2)The age of the later Samhitas, Brahmanas and Upanishads (From c.1500 B.C. to 500 B.C.) 3)The age of the Sutras, Epics and early Smrities ( From c.500 B.C. to c.500 A.D.) 4)The age of later Smrities,Commentators and Digest-writers (From c.500 A.D. toe. 1800 A.D.) 5)The age of the British rule (From 1857 to 1947) 6)The post-Tndependence period The following is a brief review of the position of the Indian woman in each period. 1) The age of the Rigveda :- The position of the Indian woman in the age of the Rigveda was highly satisfactory. This is rather surprising because-as Dr. P.S. Altekar rightly points out in his book The Position of Women in Hindu Civilisation-generallv the condition of women improves as society advances to modem times but the case 45 of Hindu women is an exception. According to Dr.Altekar, this satisfactory position was partly due to political and partly to religious causes. The political cause was that as the Non-Aryans were probably outnumbering the Aryans at that time, the Aryans wanted to have as strong and numerous an army as possible. In this situation, the Aryans could not go in for the sati custom or prohibit widow remarriages.
