Welcome to the April edition We hope you enjoy it. There was going to be a great deal going on in the next month or so but we are sorry to report that most, including the VE Day celebration, have been postponed. The litter picks on Good Friday in Four Elms and Markbeech have been cancelled but at the time of writing the Hever Litter Pick will take place in a “socially isolated” way. The churches have had to cancel their services with great reluctance.

The Hever Festival in the open air theatre will be hoping to get going during the summer but the Chiddingstone Literary Festival has been cancelled.

And then there is that virus...... If anyone ends up being stuck indoors and needs some local help such as shopping please do ring the editors or any of the churchwardens or those people listed on the back page. The Henry VIII, and possibly

If you are stuck indoors, or need a break when working from home here are some ideas: • Computers - now is the time to learn. • If you are running low we can find you wool for knitting, jigsaws, lend DVDs etc. Just ask. • Do a spring clean or do the weeding • Learn to play bridge on line (BBO and Bridge Club Live) or phone (Fun Bridge) • Telephone an old friend • Write your memoirs • Make some bunting which we can sew together in a long chain round each village once the isolation is over (and use later at all these postponed events). • Or, best of all, write an article for The Link!!!

I am off now to have a Skype drink with a friend (in other words we connect via the cameras on our computers and raise our glasses to one another from the comfort of our splendid isolation). Joanna Wade

OPENING ON THE 28th MARCH

We look forward to welcoming all visitors at the end of March for our 2020 season, our Year of Japan.

LITERARY FESTIVAL 2020

In these uncertain times please check our website for the latest information regarding this event.

The Japanese Room has been updated for our Year of Japan. In one of the antique cases we have recreated the look of Denys Eyre Bower’s displays – a fascinating jumble of unique Japanese objects in the style of a ‘cabinet of curiosities’. Denys focused on collecting objects that he found visually interesting and crowded them into cases with few labels. He believed that if an expert visited they would know about the objects anyway and other visitors could just appreciate their beauty. There are also new information panels which explain the story of Denys’ Japanese collection and the history behind the objects. Visit the Japanese Room to discover new treasures from the collection which have been in storage for many years. Details about our Year of Japan and upcoming events can be found on our website, including a demonstration of ikebana (the art of Japanese flower arranging) on the 5th of April and tours of the Japanese Room on the 8th and 26th of April.

When he had not returned on Monday we started worrying, even more so when he had not returned by Tuesday, and then Wednesday. Late Wednesday afternoon a lovely neighbour called to say she thought Bobby was high up in one of her oak trees, and, indeed he was. A local tree surgeon managed to entice him down on Thursday morning and this is a picture of him looking a bit bedraggled, after his safe return.
