His verse is written primarily in a mixture of Hindi and Urdu, though he has also written several Punjabi songs and also written several compositions in dialects of Hindi such as Braj Bhasha, Khadi Boli, Haryanvi and Marwadi.

As a director, he is known to concentrate on human emotions in his storylines; whether it is his early works like Mere Apne and Koshish or the more recent ones – Ehsaas is Tarah, Maachis and Hu tu tu. Koshish here requires special mention for its poignant story of the lives of a deaf-mute couple. Further, his leftist leanings and interests in political matters is also highlighted in his works like Aandhi, Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. He received numerous awards and felicitations for his contribution to cinema and literature. While he received his only best direction awards (both Filmfare and National awards) for Mausam, he has received significant recognition for his work as a lyricist. He was honored with the best lyricist award at Filmfare 11 times (from 1972 to 2005) and twice at the National Awards. He also received recognition for dialogue writing (Anand. Namak Haraam, Maachis, Saathiya) and screenplay (Koshish). In 2002, he received the Lifetime Achievement award from Filmfare and the Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection of Short stories, Dhuan. Two years later, he was awarded the Padma Bhusan. He has also collaborated with artists on special works – Main aur Mera saaya with Bhupen Hazarika, Udaas Pani with Jagjit Singh and Vaada with Amjad Ali Khan. Apart from these, he has given his voice for a tribute to Amrita Pritam as well as the Karadi Tales, an audio book project.

As before, you might not get a glimpse of him this weekend. According to his daughter, Meghna Gulzar, he runs away from the city on his birthdays. “Once we even went on a picnic to Hampi”, she says.
