SUMMARY: This was a wonderful tour to three unique and beautiful lodges. All had an enjoyable and rewarding time experiencing the beauty of Belize and it’s , the gracious people, the variety of , and the nature and flora. We saw or heard 264 species of birds, including all 10 of the , 29 flycatchers, and 19 species of warblers. For some it was their first tropical birding experience, and all agreed they would be returning to this magical part of the world!

BIRDS

Great Tinamou Tinamus major (2) (H) Heard 2 mornings before walks at Pook’s Hill. Blue-winged Teal Anas discors (1) Spotted by Janet, then seen flying, at Aguacate Lagoon. Plain Chachalaca Ortalis vetula (5) Seen & heard often in flocks at all three locations. Crested Guan Penelope purpurascens (3) Seen each day at Chan Chich, looking too large to be in trees! Great Curassow Crax rubra (3) Spotted along the road on each drive at Chan Chich. Black-throated Bobwhite Colinus nigrogularis (1) We surprised a covey along the trail in the savanna & they flew in many directions for additional looks. Ocellated Turkey Meleagris ocellata (4)(Y) First flock seen along the road to Aguacate Lagoon, quickly disappeared, but they were seen everywhere at Chan Chich & Gallon Jug. Pied-billed Grebe Podilymbus podiceps (2) Seen twice on river rides in the New River Lagoon. Jabiru Jabiru mycteria (3) Janet saw 2 on her river transfer. The rest of the group saw one on a nest during the cocktail cruise, one flew along the lagoon, and 2 in another nest on the return river transfer. What a thrill to see 2 nesting pairs of this huge ! Wood Stork Mycteria americana (3) Spotted by Teresa in trees on the North/South Highway, later seen often flying & in trees. Magnificent Frigatebird Fregata magnificens (1) Photographed by Teresa before the group arrived in Belize City; many seen over the Radisson Hotel on the waterfront the next morning. Neotropic Cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus (5) Found whenever we were around water. Double-crested Cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus (1) Sitting on the pier on the Belize City waterfront. Anhinga Anhinga anhinga (3) Best views at the Aguacate Lagoon drying out their wings.

Brown Pelican Pelecanus occidentalis (1) Seen flying at the Belize City waterfront. Least Bittern Ixobrychus exilis (1) Spotted by Ruben hiding in the long grass during boat ride from the savanna. Bare-throated Tiger-Heron Tigrisoma mexicanum (3) What a thrill to see this impressive heron three times; on the New River transfer, on the spotlight tour, and at the Suspension Bridge at Chan Chich. Great Blue Heron Ardea herodias (6) Seen often when we were around water. Great Egret Ardea alba (7) Seen almost daily in fields and along water. Snowy Egret Egretta thula (4) Good looks often along the New River. Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea (7) Seen whenever we were near water & ponds. Tricolored Heron Egretta tricolor (1) Only seen once, flying at the Aguacate Lagoon. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis (8) Seen almost daily at all locations, 2 for every head of livestock. Green Heron Butorides virescens (5) Many seen during the New River ride to Lamanai. Agami Heron Agamia agami (2) This beautiful bird was seen on the spotlight cruise & the river at Pook’s Hill. Yellow-crowned Night-Heron Nyctanassa violacea (5) Many seen on the New River & on the night drive at Chan Chich. Boat-billed Heron Cochlearius cochlearius (4) Ruben pointed out the rookery on the New River for great photo opportunities; also seen on the boat ride to the savanna. White Ibis Eudocimus albus (1) Anne spotted one flying up from a wet field on the drive to Chan Chich. Black Vulture Corabyps atratus (10) Seen daily soaring & perched at all locations. Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura (10) Seen daily soaring & perched at all locations. Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture Cathartes burrovianus (4) Spotted by Ruben over Indian Church & seen soaring along the New River. King Vulture Sarcoramphus papa (2) Spotted first by Janet while viewing the perched Orange-breasted Falcon; 2 seen soaring low on our last walk at Chan Chich. Osprey Pandion haliaetus (4) Seen flying and perched on trips on the New River. White-tailed Kite Elanus leucurus (2) First one found perched on drive to Aguacate Lagoon & another in the same area soaring over a field being attached by a Bat Falcon. Two more seen perched in Gallon Jug. Swallow-tailed Kite Elanoides forficatus (1) Lucky sighting by all from the Mountain Pine Ridge/Slate Creek Lookout trail. Black Hawk-Eagle Spizaetus tyrannus (2) Seen & heard twice, once at Pook’s Hill and again at Chan Chich. Black-collared Hawk Busarellus nigricollis (2) Seen twice perched in trees along the New River. Snail Kite Rostrhamus sociabilis (4) Seen on each boat ride on the New River Lagoon. Double-toothed Kite Harpagus bidentatus (1) Spotted perched by Ruben near the Suspension Bridge in Chan Chich offering great photos for all. Bicolored Hawk Accipiter bicolor (2) Spotted perched by Ruben on the Sugarmill ruin walk & seen mating with a second hawk. Great Black Hawk Buteogallus urubitinga (1) Seen perched near the water on the transfer to Lamanai. Roadside Hawk Rupornis magnirostris (8) Seen often at all locations along roads & along the New River White-tailed Hawk Geranoaetus albicaudatus (1) Nesting pair spotted by Pat on road to Aguacate Lagoon; seen on nest and mating. Short-tailed Hawk Buteo brachyurus (2) Ruben spotted a pair, one dark and one light morph, soaring together on our departing river transfer. Ruddy Crake Laterallus ruber (1) (H) Heard on our boat ride at Lamanai to the savanna. Purple Gallinule Porphyrio martinicus (2) Seen “walking on water” on both New River transfers. Common Gallinule Gallinula galeata (1) Seen at the Aguacate Lagoon. American Coot Fulica americana (1) One individual at the Aguacate Lagoon. Sungrebe Heliornis fulica (1) Ruben spotted this rare grebe on our New River transfer to Lamanai. Limpkin Aramus guarauna (4) Seen and heard on each boat ride on the New River. Black-necked Stilt Himantopus mexicanus (1) About 15 together at the Aguacate Lagoon. Killdeer Charadrius vociferus (1) In agricultural field on road to Pook’s Hill & the Aguacate Lagoon. Northern Jacana Jacana spinosa (3) Many adults & juveniles on the New River transfers & at Aguacate Lagoon. Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus (1) Flew up from a wet field on drive to Aguacate Lagoon. Least Sandpiper Calidris minutilla (1) A flock of 15 seen at the Aguacate Lagoon. Spotted Sandpiper Actitis macularius (1) One individual flew continuously along a canal at the Aguacate Lagoon. Greater Yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca (1) Three seen with the Black-necked Stilts at the Aguacate Lagoon. Laughing Gull Leucophaeus atricilla (1) Many on piers at the waterfront in Belize City, some having full breeding hoods. Royal Tern Thalasseus maximus (1) Preening on the piers at the Belize City waterfront. Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis (1) Nice scope looks to see the yellow tips on the bills on the piers at the Belize City waterfront. Rock Pigeon Columba livia (3) Seen on each drive through towns. Pale-vented Pigeon Patagioenas cayennensis (6) Most often seen & heard pigeon at Lamanai. Scaled Pigeon Patagioenas speciosa (6) Nice scope looks at Pook’s Hill & 8 in one tree on drive to Aguacate Lagoon. White-crowned Pigeon Patagioenas leucocephala (1) Two individuals in a tree close to the road on the road to Aguacate Lagoon Red-billed Pigeon Patagioenas flavirostris (5) Nice scope looks in Indian Church Village. Short-billed Pigeon Patagioenas nigrirostris (2) Good looks at this pigeon in the scope on walk on Chan Chich Road. Common Ground-Dove Columbina passerina (1) A few on the road to Aguacate Lagoon. Ruddy Ground-Dove Columbina talpacoti (7) Seen at all locations in small numbers. Blue Ground-Dove Claravis pretiosa (6) We were lucky to get scope looks at this beautiful elusive and vocal blue dove. White-tipped Dove Leptotila verreauxi (3) Saw this dove on the savanna at Lamanai & heard it at Chan Chich. Gray-headed Dove Leptotila plumbeiceps (1) One quick look at one on a walk at Indian Church. White-winged Dove Zenaida asiatica (2) Spotted by Pat sitting on a wire in a town on the drive to Mountain Pine Ridge. Groove-billed Ani Crotophaga sulcirostris (5) Seen often in agricultural areas at all locations. Squirrel Cuckoo Piaya cayana (6) A crowd favorite, good looks at individuals almost daily. Spectacled Owl Pulsatrix perspicillata (1) Heard nightly at Pook’s Hill; after 2 long searches finally found roosting by guide Mario.

Common Pauraque Nyctidromus albicollis (6) A yard bird at Pook’s Hill & seen & heard at Chan Chich. Yucatan Nightjar Antrostomus badius (1) (Y) Nice looks on the Lamanai spotlight cruise. Northern Potoo Nyctibius jamaicensis (2) One seen on the Lamanai spotlight cruise & 2 seen on the Chan Chich night drive. White-collared Swift Streptoprocne zonaris (1) Flying low over the valley at the Slate Creek Lookout. Vaux’s Swift Chaetura vauxi (4) Heard & seen in large groups along the New River & at Pook’s Hill. Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift Panyptila cayennensis (1) Pointed out by Rauel on coffee plantation drive at Chan Chich. White-necked Jacobin Florisuga mellivora (8) Seen in good numbers at all locations, vocal & aggressive. Long-billed Hermit Phaethornis longirostris (7) Seen often at feeders at all locations. Stripe-throated Hermit Phaethrosnis striigularis (3) Quick looks at this small hermit at flowers on the trails at all locations. Green-breasted Mango Anthracothorax prevostii (2) Best looks at the feeders at the Butterfly Farm. Ruby-throated Hummingbird Archilochus colubris (4) Seen behind the lodge at Lamanai in Indian Church Village. Scaly-breasted Hummingbird Phaeochroa cuvierii (1) Good looks at a number of individuals at the feeders at the Butterfly Farm. Wedge-tailed Sabrewing Campylopterus curvipennis (1) Seen at same feeders with the Violet for comparison at the Butterfly Farm. Violet Sabrewing Campylopterus hemileucurus (1) We waited until all got good looks at this beautiful hummingbird at the feeders at the Butterfly Farm. White-bellied Emerald Amazilia candida (2) Seen at the Butterfly Farm feeders. Rufous-tailed Hummingbird Amazilia tzacatl (10) Most common hummingbird seen daily at all locations. Slaty-tailed Trogon Trogon massena (3) Good scope views on the Chan Chich trails. Black-headed Trogon Trogon melanocephalus (6) Most often seen trogon at all locations along the trails. Gartered Trogon Trogon caligatus (4) Seen at all locations with good scope views. Tody Motmot Hylomanes momotula (2) Heard & finally seen well by all on the River Trail at Chan Chich. Lesson’s Motmot Momotus lessonii (3) Surprisingly, only seen by Pat by her cabin, but heard often. Ringed Kingfisher Megaceryle torquata (6) Many perched on wires on drive on North/South Highway and later at all locations. Belted Kingfisher Megaceryle alcyon (3) On wires on North/South Highway and along New River waterways. Green Kingfisher Chloroceryle americana (7) Nice views at all locations along the water. American Pygmy Kingfisher Chloroceryle aenea (3) Spotted by Ruben sleeping on the Lamanai spotlight cruise & great looks feeding on the Chan Chich River trail. White-necked Puffbird Notharchus hyperrhynchus (3) Good photo opportunities at all locations. White-whiskered Puffbird Malacoptila panamensis (5) Seen often perched low at each location. Rufous-tailed Jacamar Galbula ruficauda (1) Seen feeding at the same pond at Chan Chich as the American Pygmy Kingfisher. Collared Aracari Pteroglossus torquatus (7) Another crowd favorite, seen often at all locations. Keel-billed Toucan Ramphastos sulfuratus (9) Happy to see this unusual species daily at all locations! Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Sphyrapicus varius (1) We were happy to help find this bird on the savanna for our guide-in-training, Chris, a life bird for him! Smoky-brown Woodpecker Picoides fumigatus (1) We only saw this beautiful woodpecker once, on our first walk at Chan Chich. Golden-olive Woodpecker Colaptes rubiginosus (1) Also one good look at this woodpecker on our first walk at Lamanai. Chestnut-collared Woodpecker Celeus castaneus (2) Seen on our Mayan ruin walk at Lamanai & at the coffee plantation near Gallon Jug. Lineated Woodpecker Dryocopus lineatus (4) Seen often around Indian Church & at Pook’s Hill. Pale-billed Woodpecker Campephilus guatemalensis (6) This impressive relative of the Ivory –billed was seen at all locations & we heard his distinctive double knock. Collared Forest-Falcon Micrastur semitorquatus (1) A few got quick looks on our Mayan archeological walk at Chan Chich. Laughing Falcon Herptotheres cachinnans (4) We had good scope looks at this beautiful falcon in Lamanai & watched it chase a White-tailed Kite on the road to the Aguacate Lagoon. American Kestrel Falco sparverius (4) Seen in Lamanai, on the road to Aguacate Lagoon, and in Gallon Jug. Aplomado Falcon Falco femoralis (1) Seen flying across the New River Lagoon as we returned from the savanna. Bat Falcon Falco rufigularis (2) Scope looks at a pair near the Mayan temple in Lamanai. Orange-breasted Falcon Falco deiroleucus (1) What a thrill to see the 2nd rarest falcon in the world perched for 15 minutes on a bare branch from the Slate Creek Lookout, Mountain Pine Ridge. We could read the number 29 on his (or her?) pink band. Brown-hooded Parrot Pyrilia haematotis (1) Finally got good looks on our last walk at Chan Chich. White-crowned Parrot Pionus senilis (4) Good scope looks at Pook’s Hill & Chan Chich. Red-lored Parrot Amazona autumnalis (10) Seen & heard daily at all locations. White-fronted Parrot Amazona albifrons (4) Seen & heard all days at Lamanai. Yellow-lored Parrot Amazona xantholora (1) (Y) Saw 8 flying together & then perched on the walk at the savanna. Mealy Parrot Amazona farinosa (3) Got scope looks on a walk at Pook’s Hill. Olive-throated Parakeet Eupsittula nana (6) The only parakeet in Belize, got good looks often in all locations. Barred Antshrike Thamnophilus doliatus (6) Seen or heard at all locations. Plain Antvireo Dysithamnus mentalis (1) Difficult to see in a dark bush with a feeding mixed flock on a Chan Chich trail. Dot-winged Antwren Microrhopias quixensis (1) Two were feeding in the mixed flock with other ant birds on a Chan Chich trail. Dusky Antbird Cercomacroides tyrannina (1) Heard & seen by a few on a trail at Pook’s Hill. Black-faced Antthrush Formicarius analis (1) We followed the vocalization of this bird as he led the mixed flock of ant birds on a trail at Chan Chich. Scaly-throated Leaftosser Sclerurus guatemalensis (1) We all heard this bird’s loud call & a few got quick glimpses. Olivaceous Woodcreeper Sittasomus griseicapillus (2) We followed this bird from tree to tree to get good looks on the walk at the Sugarmill, Lamanai. Tawny-winged Woodcreeper Dendrocincla anabatina (1) Nice looks at the kingfisher pond at Chan Chich. Ivory-billed Woodcreeper Xiphorhynchus flavigaster (4) Nice looks at all three locations. Plain Xenops Xenops minutus (2) Seen with mixed feeding flocks the last two days at Chan Chich. Rufous-breasted Spinetail Synallaxis erythrothorax (1) Guide first heard this dark bird buried in a dark bush & worked hard for all to eventually see it! Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet Camptostoma imberbe (1) All had good looks at this bird heard by Ruben on the savanna walk. Greenish Eleania Myiopagis viridicata (1) Quick looks at this bird on the savanna walk. Yellow-bellied Eleania Elaenia flavogaster (3) Seen well & heard on the savanna walk & again on Chan Chich walks. Ochre-bellied Flycatcher Mionectes oleagineus (1) Two seen clearly on a walk at Pook’s Hill. Northern Bentbill Oncostoma cinereigulare (2) A few of us got good looks at this very diminutive flycatcher. Common Tody-Flycatcher Todirostrum cinereum (1) Guide Mario & a few others got a quick glimpse of this tiny bird at Pook’s Hill. Eye-ringed Flatbill Rhynchocyclus brevirostris (1) We actually saw 2 of these hard to find birds on our Mayan ruin walk at Lamanai. Yellow-olive Flycatcher Tolmomyias sulphurescens (2) Seen twice on walks at Indian Church. Stub-tailed Spadebill Platyrinchus cancrominus (1) (H) Heard by our local guide Mario at Pook’s Hill. Royal Flycatcher Onychorhynchus coronatus (1) We worked hard with Rauel for all to see this beautiful flycatcher with its partially raised crest. Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher Terenotriccus erythrurus (1) This pretty flycatcher was seen on our last walk at Chan Chich with the mixed feeding flock. Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher Myiobius sulphureipyglus (2) We had good looks twice at this bird at Chan Chich. Eastern Wood-Pewee Contopus virens (1) Vocalizing providing definite identification around the Chan Chich plaza. Tropical Pewee Contopus cinereus (1) Seen on our last walk at Chan Chich near the cabanas. Yellow-bellied Flycatcher Empidonax flaviventris (5) A familiar species, seen well at all locations. Least Flycatcher Empidonax minimus (9) An Eastern US migrant, seen often at all locations. Black Phoebe Sayornis nigricans (1) Only seen once at Pook’s Hill along the river. Vermilion Flycatcher Pyrocephalus rubinus (3) Our first one was spotted by Val on the North/South Highway; later we had good looks on the savanna walk. Bright-rumped Attila Attila spadiceus (3) We had 3 birds working at ground level on our walk at the coffee plantation. Dusky-capped Flycatcher Myiarchus tuberculifer (5) This mournful vocalization of this species heard often at all locations & seen well at many. Great Crested Flycatcher Myiarchus crinitus (1) Two seen on the walk to the Slate Creek Lookout. Brown-crested Flycatcher Myiarchus tyrannulus (3) Seen on the savanna & at Chan Chich. Great Kiskadee Pitangus sulphuratus (4) Heard & seen along the New River & other locations. Tropical Kingbird Tyrannus melancholicus (10) All could identify this most common species we saw in Belize. Couch’s Kingbird Tyrannus couchii (3) Identified by voice on walks at Indian Church, Lamanai. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Tyrannus forficatus (1) Seen on the drive to the coffee plantation, Gallon Jug. Fork-tailed Flycatcher Tyrannus savana (4) Fun to see this bird many times including the agricultural field near Pook’s Hill, drive to Aguacate Lagoon, and in Gallon Jug. White-collared Manakin Manacus candei (3) Delightful looks on the Mayan ruin walk, Pook’s Hill, and Chan Chich. Red-capped Manakin Pipra mentalis (3) Seen at all three locations and a real photo favorite of the group! Black-crowned Tityra Tityra inquisitor (1) Male & female found by guide Rauel on the coffee plantation. Masked Tityra Tityra semifasciata (6) Seen at all three locations, males & females together. Northern (Thrush-like) Shiffornis Schiffornis veraepacis (1) (H) Heard by guide Mario on walk at Pook’s Hill. Rose-throated Becard Pachyramphus aglaiae (3) Good looks at all three locations. Rufous-browed Peppershrike Cyclarhis gujanensis (2) Ruben heard & we got good looks at this species from the boat returning from the savanna. Green Shrike-Vireo Vireolanius pulchellus (1) Seen & heard with the mixed feeding flock in Chan Chich. Tawny-crowned Greenlet Tunchiornis ochraceiceps (2) Seen well on trail to the Sugarmill & at Chan Chich. Lesser Greenlet Pachysylvia decurtata (2) Seen twice on walks on Chan Chich Road. White-eyed Vireo Vireo griseus (6) Fun to see this little vireo sleeping on the night walk at Lamanai; seen & heard at all three locations. Mangrove Vireo Vireo pallens (2) Close looks from the boat on the river ride from the savanna. Yellow-throated Vireo Vireo flavifrons (1) Two seen on walk at the savanna. Brown Jay Psilorhinus morio (10) These large & noisy jays were seen daily in flocks at all locations. Green Jay Cyanocorax yncas (1)(H) Heard by guide Mario at the Butterfly Farm. Northern Rough-winged Swallow Stelgidopteryx serripennis (5) Seen in good numbers at all locations. Purple Martin Progne subis (1) A few seen over the savanna during the walk. Gray-breasted Martin Progne chalybea (4) Seen over the fields on the North/South Highway & at Lamanai. Mangrove Swallow Tachycineta albilinea (6) Many followed our boat during the cocktail cruise & also seen in good numbers in Gallon Jug. House Wren Troglodytes aedon (5) Heard & quick glimpses at all locations. Band-backed Wren Campylorhynchus zonatus (2) This large & colorful wren was seen at close range in a palm by the Chan Chich cabanas. Spot-breasted Wren Pheugopedius maculipectus (10) All came to recognize this shy wren’s song, which was heard daily at all locations. Some of us finally saw 2 on the road at Indian Church. White-bellied Wren Uropsila leucogastra (1) We heard & a few got glimpses of this songster at Pook’s Hill. White-breasted Wood-Wren Henicorhina leucosticta (3) Guide Luis worked hard for us to see this very small & elusive wren on a trail at Chan Chich. Long-billed Gnatwren Ramphocaenus melanurus (3) Often heard & some glimpses of this shy gnatwren at all 3 locations. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Polioptila caerulea (2) We recognized the vocalization of this species & saw two clearly from the boat when returning from the savanna.
