    Rock and Popular Music 1960 - 2000 Cultural and Historic Background Information Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. It originates from 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly from several other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political. At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant. In the early 1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was gradually overtaken by pop rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity. Wir spielten 2016 beim BON-Fest im schottischen Kirriemur, nahe dem Geburtsort von BON SCOTT Forfar. Damals wurde dort eine SCOTT-Statue eingeweiht, bei der auch MARK als Stargast geladen war.     Proceedings of the 24th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2019) Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia, 1-3 April 2019 Let There Be Rock: The AC/DC Phenomenon Volker Janssen APAS Publications Officer [email protected] ABSTRACT In a successful career spanning more than 45 years, AC/DC have persistently ignored trends in popular music and resolutely stuck to their bluesy, stripped-to-the-bone brand of high- voltage rock ’n’ roll. This paper investigates the AC/DC phenomenon by examining song lyrics and connotations, the band’s work rate, and the vocalist debate (Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson). Furthermore, a group of 82 hardcore fans is examined to get a better understanding of their passion for the band, and it is outlined how the AC/DC brand is increasingly being marketed to a larger consumer base not limited to music lovers. It was found that the word ‘rock’ is by far the most prominent in AC/DC song titles but lyrically almost half of all AC/DC songs revolve around sex. While the frequency of album releases slowed considerably over time, the band generally played 150 live gigs following each studio album. Bon Scott material continues to account for at least 45% of the songs included in typical AC/DC live sets. Analysis of a questionnaire revealed how committed the cohort of hardcore fans is. They generally became serious fans in their early teens, prefer the older material, experienced their first gig during early adulthood and enjoyed up to 124 gigs since. This paper also demonstrates how one can collect, analyse, interpret and present data.

But then not all British bands are aged around 17 and lip- smackingly female. The band has barely been in existence a year, brought together in the Los Angeles backwaters by Kim Fowley, and their climb from the LA suburbs club, Wild Man Sam's (drawing about 20 punters a night), to headlining two nights running at London's Roundhouse (and filling it) has been, to say the least, meteoric. "When the Beatles play the Cavern again, we go back to Wild Man Sam's," bassist Jackie Fox (16) romantically notes as we head for downtown Liverpool. The Runaways play rock and roll, and the only female precedent we have is Fanny, who broke up last year.

In its own way, it was a reaction to the pompous art rock and lumbering arena rock of the early '70s. AC/DC's rock was minimalist -- no matter how huge and bludgeoning their guitar chords were, there was a clear sense of space and restraint. Combined with Bon Scott's larynx- shredding vocals, the band spawned countless imitators over the next two decades and enjoyed commercial success well into the 2000s, scoring their biggest hits after Brian Johnson replaced the departed Scott. AC/DC were formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young after his previous band, the Velvet Underground, collapsed (no relation to the seminal American group). With his younger brother Angus serving as lead guitarist, the band played some gigs around Sydney. Angus was only 18 at the time, and his sister suggested that he wear his school uniform on-stage; the look became the band's visual trademark.     1 “For Those About To Rock”: The History of AC/DC From 1976 - Present By: Olivia Bower for Advanced Composition, ETSU, Fall 2016 Letter From the Author: Many people have discovered AC/DC through their parent’s obsession with the band. However, growing up in East Tennessee with a very conservative family, I was not aware of the band until my middle school years. I found the band by simply doing a YouTube search to see what all the fuss was about. After listening to the Back in Black album, I was immediately hooked. At the time, my parents were very strict on the music that I was allowed to listen to, and AC/DC did not make the list of appropriate bands. Despite my parent’s disapproval, I would sit in my room with my headphones on listening to their albums over and over again. To avoid being caught, I would have two tabs open on my browser, one with a Christian album playing and one with AC/DC playing. I did this so if I heard my parents opening my door I could quickly close down the page of electrifying music and pretend to be listening to hymns the entire time. My love for AC/DC was never meant to be an act of rebellion, but that is what it ended up becoming. My parents never found out that I was an AC/DC fan until I was eighteen years old and living on my own. They were not mad, but they were shocked. I highly recommend anyone who has not heard an AC/DC song before to check some of their work out.
