particular the evolution of Germany from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. It seems worth studying this evolution from a multidisciplinary perspective, especially in the field of bilateral and multilateral relations with other European countries, with special attention to those which belonged to Charles V’s empire (Austria, , Spain, The Netherlands, , Luxembourg, ...), but also with other important countries, such as the United States. The research projects of the selected Ph. D. students should refer to one of the following topics: I. Germany and Spain: Bilateral relations and European and international cooperation.

II. German technological and scientific innovation in different fields of research, medicine, biotechnology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc., as well as in related projects, such as the Human Genome Project, the ITER Project, etc., and their impact in Europe’s scientific community and citizens.

III.The German society: immigration in an ageing population.

IV. Germany as a testing ground for economic and social experiences: the so-called Rhenan capitalist model.

V. Germany: Federal State and model of federalism.

VI. Cultural and intellectual elites mobility from and to Germany.

VII. Germany and its neighbours. Interregional and crossborder cooperation with Eastern and Western European countries.

VIII. Germany according to other Europeans: stereotypes, cultural heritage, the role of sports, the memory of the two world wars as image vectors.

IX.The impact of German reunification in the process of European integration.

X. German culture and language, the role of institutions and foundations that promote German culture and language.

XI. Germany’s role in technological transfer and industrial cooperation.
