All rights reserved. Revision date June 5, 2005 1 Introduction The usual approach to treating general relativity as a field theory is based on the La- grangian formulation. For some purposes (e.g. numerical relativity and canonical quan- tization), a Hamiltonian formulation is preferred. The Hamiltonian formulation of a field theory, like the Hamiltonian formulation of particle mechanics, requires choosing a pre- ferred time variable. For a single particle, proper time may be used, and the Hamiltonian formulation remains manifestly covariant. For a continuous medium, the Hamiltonian formulation requires that a time variable be defined everywhere, not just along the path of one particle. Thus, the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity requires a sepa- ration of time and space coordinates, known as a 3+1 decomposition. Although the form of the equations is no longer manifestly covariant, they are valid for any choice of time coordinate, and for any coordinate system the results are equivalent to those obtained from the Lagrangian approach. In place of four-dimensional gradients, we use time derivatives and three-dimensional gra- dients. The main role of rotation in this universe consists in the avoidance of the cosmological singu ­ larity in the early universe, when the centrifugate forces of rotation dominate over gravitation and the collapse does not occur [3]. According to these reports (see the report of the workshop on the detection of gravitational waves by Paik in this volume), it is highly probable that the sensitivity of detectors such as laser interferometers and ultra low temperature resonant bars will reach the level of h ~ 10—21 by 1998. in this level we may expect the detection of the gravitational waves from astrophysical sources such as coalescing binary neutron stars once a year or so. Therefore the progress in numerical relativity is urgently required to predict the wave pattern and amplitude of the gravitational waves from realistic astrophysical sources. The time left for numerical relativists is only six years or so although there are so many difficulties in principle as well as in practice. Apart from detection of gravitational waves, numerical relativity itself has a final goal: Solve the Einstein equations numerically for (my initial data as accurately as possible and clarify physics in strong gravity. in GRIIS there were six oral presentations and ll poster papers on recent progress in numerical relativity. i will make a brief review of six oral presenta— tions. If new physics is based on such an extension, it must be supersymmetric. Furthermore, the quantum properties of supersymmetric theories are much better under control than in non-supersymmetric ones, thanks to powerful non- renormalization theorems.

    Vector Calculus Independent Study Unit 5: Vector Fields A vector field is a function which associates a vector to every point in space. Vector fields are everywhere in nature, from the wind (which has a velocity vector at every point) to gravity (which, in the simplest interpretation, would exert a vector force at on a mass at every point) to the gradient of any scalar field (for example, the gradient of the temperature field assigns to each point a vector which says which direction to travel if you want to get hotter fastest). In this section, you will learn the following techniques and topics: • How to graph a vector field by picking lots of points, evaluating the field at those points, and then drawing the resulting vector with its tail at the point. • A flow line for a velocity vector field is a path ~σ(t) that satisfies ~σ0(t)=F~(~σ(t)) For example, a tiny speck of dust in the wind follows a flow line. If you have an acceleration vector field, a flow line path satisfies ~σ00(t)=F~(~σ(t)) [For example, a tiny comet being acted on by gravity.] • Any vector field F~ which is equal to ∇f for some f is called a con- servative vector field, and f its potential. The terminology comes from physics; by the fundamental theorem of calculus for work in- tegrals, the work done by moving from one point to another in a conservative vector field doesn’t depend on the path and is simply the difference in potential at the two points.

We present basic formalism of supersymmetry, super- symmetric non-renormalization theorems, and summarize non-perturbative dynamics of supersymmetric QCD. Theoretical Physics, Waterloo, ON N2L 2Y5, Canada Abstract In her recent work, Dittrich generalized Rovelli’s idea of partial observables to construct Dirac observables for constrained systems to the general case of an arbitrary first class constraint algebra with structure functions rather than structure constants. Here we use this framework and propose how to implement explicitly a reduced phase space quantization of a given system, at least in principle, without the need to compute the gauge equivalence classes. The degree of practicality of this programme depends on the choice of the partial observables involved. The (multi-fingered) time evolution was shown to correspond to an automorphism on the set of Dirac observables so generated and interesting representations of the latter will be those for which a suitable preferred subgroup is realized unitarily. We sketch how such a programme might look like for General Relativity. arXiv:gr-qc/0411031v1 6 Nov 2004 We also observe that the ideas by Dittrich can be used in order to generate constraints equivalent to those of the Hamiltonian constraints for General Relativity such that they are spatially diffeomorphism invariant. We review Dirac's classical formalism of dealing with such problems and motivate the definition of objects such as singular and nonsingular Lagrangian, first and second class constraints, and the Dirac bracket.
