A Message From JFCS Leadership

Imagine it is 1935. It was a frightening, uncertain time in , six years into the Great Depression. No end in sight. That year, Jewish Family & Children’s Service was founded by a courageous group of Jewish women who saw tremendous hardship in our community. Their vision laid the bedrock to create JFCS. Over the last 8 decades: • JFCS changed the face of child welfare in Arizona, • led the fight against child and domestic abuse, • and is now one of the largest social service providers in our state.

Today, JFCS serves all – every age, every faith, every background, helping our community be Healthy. Strong. Resilient.

Our clients live and breathe resilience every day. With your help, we are achieving our Lorrie Henderson, mission of healing lives. Because of you, in 2019, JFCS touched the lives of over 40,000 President & CEO individuals in Maricopa County.

JFCS recently opened our newest facility, the JFCS East Valley Healthcare Center. This continues our strategic initiative to provide integrated care to our clients, that is, both behavioral health and primary medical care in one location. The new JFCS East Valley Healthcare Center is double the size of our former Mesa clinic, and now able to serve over 6,000 patients in the East Valley. Along with our facilities in Phoenix and Glendale, the East Valley Healthcare Center marks JFCS’ third integrated care center in Maricopa County. Not too far into the future, we look forward to launching our fourth integrated care center with the expansion of our West Valley clinic.

Whether we know it or not; whether we see it or not, there are many among us who need help and healing. Most people turn to JFCS on their worst day – overwhelmed and vulnerable. But, because of you, over 40,000 individuals we served last year are working to become more healthy, strong and resilient, living full, independent lives of purpose Executive Leadership Team and dignity.

Lorrie Henderson, Ph.D., MBA, LCSW – President & CEO Our community is fortunate to have people like you, heroes like you, who help others bring light out of their darkness. The JFCS Center for Senior Enrichment’s Shabbat Program Expands

The newly renovated Palazzo means opportunities to enhance the programming at JFCS’ Center for Senior Enrichment. And one such program that has benefited is the weekly Shabbat program. What was once a 30-minute program with about 10 attendees is now a 60-minute program with more than 20 attendees each week. Attendees not only experience the elements of a traditional Shabbat service, but participate in lively discussions about the values of each week’s Torah portion and listen to and sing along to traditional music. As a result, more participants enjoy the warm and welcoming feeling of Shabbat joy along with active socialization.

3 | JFCS Annual Report • 2019 Glendale Healthcare Center’s Integrated Health Navigators Coordinate Access to Care for Clients

The Integrated Health Navigator team at the JFCS Glendale Healthcare Center is responsible for coordinating care for clients for both primary care and mental health services. The Center’s Integrated Health Navigators engage, educate, and offer support to individual clients, their family members and their caregivers to give them the best access to a timely and efficient treatment plan.

As a client advocate, the Navigators help explore options to resolving barriers that a client may have in receiving proper healthcare services. These barriers Integrated Health Navigators can include such things as access to other medical providers such as dentists that will accept the client’s insurance or offer their services at reduced rates. Transportation is often a barrier to accessing healthcare services and integrated health navigators will advocate with the client’s insurance company to cover the cost of transportation or find a community-based transportation option so the client that get to their scheduled appointments.

Specialists Trained in the “Triple P” Positive Parenting Program Seeing Success with Clients

The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program ® is a parenting and family support system designed to prevent – as well as treat – behavioral and emotional problems in children and teenagers. Youth and Family Specialists from the JFCS Glendale and Michael R. Zent Healthcare Centers were trained in this evidence-based parenting program. Client families can now obtain an individualized parent training program at home. In addition, one of the clinicians developed an “art and mindfulness” group for children when their parents visit JFCS for Triple P group sessions. This provides peace-of-mind for the parents so they don’t have to worry about childcare while parents have Positive Parenting Program appointments at JFCS. The children learn coping skills at the same time as their parents are learning parenting strategies.

Glendale Healthcare Center I am so thankful for everything you have done for me.

A year and a half ago, I came to you broken and needed support and help. The support of my psychiatrist, case manager, therapist and Integrated Health Navigator has helped me cope with my issues. They have made suggestions for tools that I could use. And I took their advice, like eating right, exercising and making short-term goals. I had trouble meeting people. And now I am in a ceramic club, I go to my apartment’s amenities including gym and sauna, and I am going for walks with my baby Penny, my dog.

The important thing I learned was that I am worth something. Before, I was discarded throughout my life.

My therapist and navigator taught me how to respond to people. And how to feel more confident. I feel I have a brand new life and I am happy. The darkness has passed for now. But I will make every attempt to keep it that way. I take one day at a time. I am still working with JFCS. I know that with JFCS there will be support and encouragement with all my struggles.

Hospital Chaplaincy Program The JFCS Hospital Chaplaincy program provides peace-of-mind for worried parents, says Rabbi Michael Dubitsky.

A child was admitted to the hospital with severe intestinal pain and the family was having a very difficult time dealing with the child’s condition. After visiting with the child and the family, the family requested that I accompany them and their child prior to surgery and say a prayer before entering the operating room. After walking alongside the family to the elevator where the medical team would be taking the child to surgery, the family felt much calmer and more able to deal with the pending surgery.

Coping Skills Group Joshua is a third grader who had angry outbursts, often during the school day. Teachers and other students did not know what would set him off. During recess or lunch the other students avoided interaction with Joshua because they were frightened of him.

Joshua joined the third grade Coping Skills group, part of JFCS’ Creating Peaceful Families in-school program, where he learned skills to help with his anger. Now, Joshua eats with his friends at school, takes the initiative to ask for help when he is feeling overwhelmed and recognizes his triggers/warning signs. The Coping Skills group has helped him become more successful both educationally and socially.

Healthy Living with Diabetes Workshop I don’t know where I would be without Jewish Family and Children’s Service. The team there really cares. My health was really declining. I felt like I was dying on the inside and out, and I gave up on myself. But the people at JFCS wouldn’t give up on me. I am very grateful for the team there, they work together as a group and that’s wonderful. I’ve been in Diabetes Class. They taught me how to eat, what not to eat and how much. I have learned so much because the tools they gave me worked. I want to thank all of you for helping me: Claudia, TJ, Carlisle, Andrea, Nikolina and so many other people at JFCS that care like the people at the front desk, those ladies are so sweet.

In 2008 we discovered JFCS and the outstanding programs & services they provide to the Valley. At that time that we made the decision to add them to our Kahn Family Charitable Trust as an annual benficiary. To promote JCFS, Lynn helped launch JFCS’ Friends of the Family and through yearly events, helped introduce JFCS programs to hundreds in the community. Lynn is also looking forward to help JFCS develop an exciting new and so critically needed program for our youth! We are honored and feel privileged to be an active supporter of Jewish Family & Children’s Service.

-Lynn & Larry Kahn

We are thrilled to support the good work of JFCS. As a social worker and Army veteran we understand the importance of community service and Tikkun Olum. Social responsibility is at the heart of Jewish practice as the selfless work of donors, volunteers, and professional helpers forward our community’s mission. It is even more crucial during this time of global crisis that we seek to unite and bring an end to world suffering. Thank you for all you do!

-Kristen & Abe Alaniz

We support JFCS because of the amazing impact the organization has on such a broad spectrum of vulnerable populations in our community. We had the opportunity to watch firsthand the impact of the Real World Job Development program and have been blown away by how teens and young adults are better for it. We are so proud to be a part of the work of JFCS and can’t wait to see what this next year has in store!
