FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 13, 1994 LENARD TO RETURN TO GOLDEN GOPHERS FOR SENIOR SEASON

Senior All-America candidate Voshon Lenard has opted to return to the Golden Gopher basketball team for his senior season. Lenard announced in May that he would make use of the NCAA's new rule allowing underclassmen to make themselves eligible for the NBA draft without losing their collegiate eligibility. The rule gives the players 30 days from the date of the draft to make their decision on whether to return to school. Lenard was drafted 46th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks on June 29, and was attending their free agent/rookie camp when he made his decision to return to school.

"I made the decision to test the waters in the NBA draft and, although things didn't work out as well as I had hoped, I did develop a very good relationship with the Milwaukee Bucks organization," said Lenard. "Coach (Mike) Dunleavy and the Bucks were very understanding of my decision to return to school. Coach Haskins and my teammates have been very supportive of me throughout this process, and I look forward to helping the Golden Gophers win a lot of basketball games next year."

"Voshon took advantage of the new NCAA rule to test his value in the NBA draft," said Head Coach Clem Haskins. "I have been supportive and understanding of his decisions throughout this entire process and have now welcomed him back to the team. He has tremendous individual talents, but is also a consummate team player. His presence, coupled with that of our other veterans, will help our fine young players develop. I'm not in favor of the NCAA rule change that allows this because it puts too much pressure on the player, coaching staff and athletics department; but that would never affect my decision on whether to allow Voshon to return to the team."

"I fully support Voshon in his decision to return to the University of Minnesota," said Frank Lenard (Voshon's father and representative). "I feel that it is a good decision and I know that Voshon will fully commit himself to do his best athletically and academically."

Media Note: Coach Haskins is out of town on a recruiting trip and Voshon is preparing for his return to school. Lenard and Coach Haskins will be available for media interviews on Friday, July 22. Further details on that news conference will be forthcoming. L'-i!\ERS!TY ()f \1!\.i\.iESOTA IEW§

NEW MEN'S ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT STAFF NAMED AT THE U OF M

A newly appointed development staff for men's intercollegiate athletics was announced today by Director of Athletics Dr. McKinley Boston.

Jan U nstad has been named Director of Development in a restructured office that raises private funds to defray scholarship . expense and balance the department's operating budget without state or university financial support.

Unstad, a native of Minneapolis, has served for the past four years as the director of development for the successful $5.5 million on-campus sports facilities campaign which recently concluded by the University of Minnesota Foundation. Funds raised during that campaign were used for the construction of the new Mariucci Arena, and the renovation of Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), Unstad earned her bachelor's degree in political science from Augsburg College.

Prior to joining the staff at the University of Minnesota Foundation, Unstad spent six years on the staff of former U.S. Senator Rudy Boschwitz in Minnesota and Washington, D.C., and served as a capital campaign director for Ketchum, Inc., a national fund-raising consulting firm, from 1988-1990.

Also earning new responsibilities at the U. of M. are Sue Graupmann as Director of Annual Giving and Carrie Pietruszewski as Donor Programs Coordinator. Pat Scott will round out the department's development staff. Graupmann, a native of Excelsior, was graduated from Minnesota in 1986 and has been a part of the men's athletics staff smce then. She has served in a variety of capacities in the Williams Fund office, and will have continuing responsibility for Williams Fund events and support-group activities.

Pietruszewski, a native of South St. Paul, was graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1990 and has spent the past four years working with the on-campus sports facilities campaign at the University of Minnesota Foundation. Prior to coming to the University, Pietruszewski was a fund-raiser for several state-wide political candidates. She will be responsible for direct fund raising and the assured seating programs.

The reorganization of the department's development office will allow Vince Fuller, formerly director of the Williams Scholarship Fund and now Director of Sales, to devote full-time efforts to football season ticket sales.

''I'm pleased to be able to continue working with these development professionals in men's athletics," Boston said. "Our ability to raise significant dollars is critical to the on-going success of our department, and I am confident that Jan, Sue, Carrie and Pat will be able to set new records for donor support." FOOTBALL INTERVIEW/PRACTICE POLICY

All requests for player or coach interviews, either in person or via phone, will be arranged by the University of Minnesota Media Relations Office. Please call the Media Relations Office at (612) 625-4090 to schedule interviews, and by allowing at least 24 hours prior notice for the interview, arrangements can be greatly facilitated.

In general, player interviews will be conducted prior to practice (noon to 2 p.m.) in the players lounge, Media Relations Office, or on the practice field. If that is not a feasible time, we will attempt to arrange an alternative time and location to conduct the interview that suits both parties.

Interviews done after practice will not conflict with meetings, training room treatments or other team obligations. Media should understand that practices are not officially concluded until such team obligations are completed. Normally practice sessions will be open to the media, unless otherwise specified by Coach Jim Wacker.

If the interview is to be conducted over the telephone, we will arrange to have the student athlete call you at a specified time. NO telephone numbers of student-athletes will be made available under any circumstances.

Once the season is underway, players usually will be available to the media from the time post-game interviews are conducted on Saturdays until after Thursday's practice. Players will NOT be available all day Friday or Saturday (prior to game). Friday practice sessions are closed.

Again this year, the University of Minnesota will conform to an equal access policy, and this means that the football locker room and the training room will be closed to the media. Interviews must be conducted outside those areas, and members of the Media Relations Office will be on hand to provide assistance for pre-arranged interviews. The post-game locker room policy will be determined weekly on the basis of equal access requests, but normally the locker room is open to the media.

Under most circumstances, Coach Wacker will be available from 11 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. He will also be available for pre-arranged interviews just prior to practice or immediately following practice. On the road, he will be available for pre-arranged interviews prior to Friday's practice. But once practice begins, that session will be closed. 1994 GOLDEN GOPHER FOOTBALL

GOLDEN GOPHERS HOLD FIRST SCRIMMAGE OF THE SEASON

The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football team held its first scrimmage of the season on Saturday at Bierman Field and a number of outstanding plays and individual performances were turned in on both sides of the ball. Head Coach Jim Wacker has his sights set on improving the running game this season and that area showed great promise Saturday. Sophomore Tommy Watson led the way with 62 yards on 12 carrries, which included a nifty 19-yard scoring run. Redshirt freshman Javon Jackson rambled for 59 yards on 14 carries, and junior co captain Chris Darkins had 48 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Senior Chuck Rios was held out of the scrimmage with a sprained right ankle. The passing game was not as sharp as Wacker would like with the season opener against Penn State just two weeks away. The Golden Gophers led the Big Ten and were ranked 12th in the nation in passing offense last season with an average of 297.9 yards a game through the air. Senior Scott Eckers completed 9 of 15 pass attempts for 85 yards, which included an 18-yard scoring strike to senior tight end Eric Dalen. Redshirt freshman Cory Sauter was 5 of 13 for 85 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dalen. Sophomore Rob Jones connected on a 19-yard scoring play with redshirt freshman Ryan Hubbard and finished 5 of 16 for 47 yards on the day. Senior Tim Schade was 4 of 13 for 41 yards. "Overall, a lot of good things happened today," Wacker said. "Our kids really went after it. On offense, we actually did a better job with the running game than we did with the passing game which is supposed to be our bread and butter. We knew we had to have a better rushing attack this season, so that's encouraging. Chris Darkins, Tommy Watson and Javon Jackson did a nice job running the ball today. "On defense, we pursued and ran to the ball real well," he continued. "Ed Hawthorne has really been dominating the line of scrimmage thus far for us and he did so again today. He is definitely our most dominating defensive player right now." The Golden Gophers will open the 1994 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host Penn State at 7 p.m. at the Metrodome. For $10 fans can receive a ticket to the game against the Nittany Lions and a ticket to the Minnesota State Fair. For more information, call (612) 624-8080 or 1-800-U-GOPHER.

GOLDEN GOPHERS HOLD SECOND SCRIMMAGE OF THE SEASON

Strong efforts on both sides of the ball highlighted the University of Minnesota football team's second scrimmage of the season on Wednesday at the Bierman Football Complex. Redshirt freshman quarterback Cory Sauter turned in some impressive numbers in the controlled scrimmage. He connected on 11 of 16 pass attempts for 186 yards and three touchdowns ... a 60-yarder to redshirt freshman Derrick Harvey, a two-yarder to junior Matt Reem and a 25-yarder to freshman Lee Hutton. Led by 80 yards on 15 carries from Chris Darkins, the running game also looked sharp. Freshman Rafael Cooper and redshirt freshman Javon Jackson racked up 50 and 43 yards, respectively, on the ground. The defense responded with four , which included two by sophomore free safety Rishon Early who was a receiver last season for the Golden Gophers. Sophomore strong safety Don Williams and freshman linebacker Pare Williams also picked off a pass. Williams returned his 85 yards for a touchdown. Junior placekicker Mike Chalberg was a perfect two-for-two on field goal attempts and three-for three on extra points. Fellow junior Garrison Harmann also nailed a 29-yard field goal and was four-for-four on extra points. "The first offense, in particular, had a big day," Coach Jim Wacker said. "Scott Eckers and Cory Sauter did a nice job at quarterback, and Chris Darkins and Javon Jackson did a nice job of running the ball. The kicking game showed a lot of improvement from last Saturday's scrimmage which is encouraging. "Defensively, Ed Hawthorne was all over the field once again," he continued. "He has been a dominant player thus far for us. We also had four interceptions. Rishon Early had two, while Pare Williams and Don Williams each had one. Overall, it was a good work day. Our young players got the opportunity to get in a lot of reps." The Golden Gophers will open the 1994 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host Penn State at 7 p.m. at the Metrodome. Chris Fowlkes is First Recipient of Murray Warmath Scholarship

During a special ceremony ~ before Saturday's Minnesota vs. Penn State football game, Chris Fowlkes will become the first recipient of the Murray Warmath Scholarship. Mike Wright, 1959 Football Captain and player under Warmath, will also take part in the presentation.

Warmath was the Golden Gopher Football Coach for 18 seasons, from 1954-71. He took the Gophers from last place in the Big Ten in 1959 to a national championship in 1960 and to a subsequent Rose Bowl appearance. His 1961 team won the '62 Rose Bowl and Warmath was named consensus National Coach of the Year.

Fowlkes saw extensive action in the offensive line as a freshman, then moved into a starting role last season. The junior from Milwaukee, Wis., has excelled in the classroom as well. A philosophy major, he was a 1993 GTE Academic All-District Selection. He is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick as well as a three-time University of Minnesota Scholar-Athlete Award Winner.

The Murray Warmath Scholarship was made possible because of generous individuals who contributed more than $150,000 to the Williams Scholarship Fund in coach Murray Warmath's name. This endowed scholarship has generated the necessary dollars to begin awarding an annual scholarship.

Fowlkes was selected based on his excellent academic performance and two years as a starter on the offensive line. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA JEW§

PARC WILLIAMS TO UNDERGO SURGERY NEXT WEEK

University of Minnesota freshman linebacker Pare Williams of Zumbrota, Minn. suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee in the season opener against Penn State at the Metrodome Saturday and will undergo reconstructive surgery next week.

Williams will be sidelined for the remainder of the '94 season, but will still have four years of eligibility remaining.

The injury happened on Williams' first play of the game in the fourth quarter. An MRI examination confirmed the extent of the injury. After discussing the options with the Golden Gopher sports medicine staff, Williams and his parents have decided that reconstructive surgery is the best option. le "Pare is one of the most promising linebacker prospects we've ever had," said Golden Gopher Coach Jim Wacker. "This is a temporary setback. He will still have four more years of eligibility remaining and we're counting on him having a great career with the Golden Gophers."
