Fishery Leaflet 588

Washington, D.C. Revised August 1965 FOREWORD

Since 194:8 the United States Department of the Interior has annually com piled a list of fishery coope ratives in the United States. The list has included t he name and address of all known fishery c ooperatives. This issue of the list of fishery cooperatives, however, includes not only the name and address of each coope rative but also gives in most Instances the name of one of the of ficers of the co-op, the numbe r of members, the number of boats owned by members, thetypeof eac h c ooperative, :md the major species of fish and shell fish caught. The number of organizatlOns is constantly changing as new cooperatives are organized dnd othe rs discontinue operations. Thls list is published solely as the best information c urrently avallable and not as authoritative data. The D epartment as sumes no responsibility In supplying the list to inquirers. Those coope ratives with the abbrevIJ. t ion (B.L A .) sho\.... n after the name are under the d i rect supervision of t he f)ureau of Indian Affairs of the Departrr;ent. The sou r c e s 0 f in for mat i 0 T' for t I, i s I e a fl et are a s t a t 1 s t i ( a I sur ve y 0 fall C. S. f ish - ery c ooperati"es initiated in December 1964:, completed Aug 1lst 1965, and a r ecen t mail survey to check on addresses of t hese cooperatives. :"0 two fishery cooperatl\-e S are ldentu"a: 1I1 all respects. Each co-op now in e xistence \ .... as organized to solve a problem - -a problem unique to the fisher m e n of a partIcular geog r aphlc area. T herefore, the organlzational and op erational activltles en,gaeed 1I1 by eac h coope ratlve are dlfferent. Bargaining. market ing, and purchas ing are the major types of fishery cooperatives, but a coope r a tive may have c ombinatlOns of these types. The fishery bargaining cooperat ive uses a committee appointed from the membership to meet with individual processor" to negotiate mutually acceptable terms and conditions for the sal e of fish :lnd shellfish products. The marketing cooperative actually accepts the products of its members for sale to dealers. processors, and wholesalers. This type of co-op may furnish all the marketing facilities and services necessary to move the product from the producer to the wholesale or retail outlet. The purchasing cooperative is organized to pool marine gear and supply needs of the members and buy these at substantial savings. Only organizations of fishermen currently recognized by the Department of the Interior as cooperatives under the provisions of the Fishery Cooperative Marketing Act of 1934 are included in this leaflet. Some activities of certain fishermen's unions are considered to be in the nature of cooperative market ing and have been considered as such by the Federal courts. However. all unions are listed in Fishery Leaflet 293. List of Fishermen's and Fish Shore W orke rs' Unions in the United State s. In addition to the lists of cooperatives and unions. there is available Fishery Leaflet 254, List of Fishery Associations in the United States. Only associations of fishermen and vessel owners (which are not cooperatives) and as sociations of whole sale and retail deale rs. proces sors. distributors, etc. are included in this leaflet.
