Sally, 16, who has been a scholarship member of the Club since 2002, continues to fly up the international junior rankings with some fantastic performances this year. We were just taking it one day at a time, we just went for it, and we enjoyed every day on the court, every moment we had, and we played so well,” said Sally. The Optus Australian Junior Davis Cup team were even more clinical than the girls with a 2-zip win against Argentina in the final. Kooyong’s Mark Veryth defeated Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi 6-3 6-3, with teen sensation Bernard Tomic sealing the win, overcoming Kevin Konfederak 6-4 6-3. “We’re pretty happy with that (defeating Argentina). I think they actually beat the main Australian Davis Cup boys, the big boys, this year, so it’s a good win. They probably grow up (playing) on clay, so it’s nice,” Mark said. Lucy Mercuri, Catherine Louis, Emily Arnott, Adriana Szili, Danielle Kypreos and Maddison Springall before the final. Stephanie Wiltshire was a revelation and Maddison Springall continued to get better as the year went on and will no doubt be stronger for the season in the top grade. The final was unfortunately very one sided despite two huge efforts from Adriana Szili and Maddison Springall who played their hearts out against two very strong opponents. Szili was the backbone of the team all year and was nearly unbeatable at number two behind the strong play of Karolina Wlodarczack. These two girls set the tone for the rest of the side and it was very rare to see them both beaten on the same day. Szili’s cool head and strong doubles play had the Kooyong girls in the box seat week in and week out and it was disappointing to see the girls have to play a full strength MCC in the final after all they had been through to get to the final.
