Newcastleton Two Day Annual Sale of Blue Grey

On Tuesday 23rd October, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Great Annual Special sale of Blue Grey heifers and Wednesday 24th saw Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental bullocks go under the hammer at Newcastleton Mart.

DAY ONE On Tuesday the In calf, bulling and heifer calves were sold whereby the cattle were forward in good condition and sold a little easier to that of last year although better than most expected. Buyers came from far and wide including Shetland Islands, Cornwall and Northern Ireland.

The day saw an overall top of £1720 twice for two pens of four heifers in calf from Messrs Wallace, Farney Shield, Hexham and purchased by Adderstonshiels Farming, Hawick and Bridgewater and Wood, Langholm. Top bulling heifers came from Messrs Kyle, Spout Bank, Brampton for a pen of five who attained £1140 and purchased by Messrs Anderson, Berwickshire and calves sold to £880 from Messrs Hogg, Milnholm, Langholm and purchased by Messrs Menzies, Thornhill and finally cows and calves peaked at £1320 from Messrs Harding, Nickies Hill, Brampton

DAY TWO The second days trading at Newcastleton Mart saw trade exceed expectations for all vendors. Blue Grey bullocks saw a very slight decline on the year with all cattle easily sold. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Topping the day’s trading was £985 for a Simmental cross bullock from Messrs Paterson, Hopsrig, Langholm. Topping the Blue Grey section was Messrs Story, Crookburn at £510 for a cracking pen of bullocks.

Newcastleton Two Day Sale of Blue Grey Cattle

On Tuesday 24th October, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their great Annual Special sale of Blue Grey heifers and on Wednesday 25th saw Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental bullocks go under the hammer at Newcastleton Mart.

DAY ONE

A catalogued entry of 608 Blue Grey heifers attracted a large crowd of buyers to the sale. A marvellous trade was received for all classes of stock.

The sale total averaged £1040.86 for all classes, seeing a rise of £50.46 on the year.

Heifers with calves at foot led the day’s trade at £1920 for a Blue Grey heifer with Limousin cross bull calf at foot from W & J Thomson, Hownam Grange Farm, Kelso.

Top price in the in-calf section was £1600 and was attained six times. Firstly from TR & KM Wallace, Farney Shields with 3 heifers, followed by RM & CM Leach, Whintings Town Farm, TK Laurie, Southdean and finally Hedgeley Farms.

Bulling heifers peaked at £1400 for a superb heifer from Messrs JW Ions, High Thorneyburn, Hexham. This good run of 23 went on to average £1148.70.

Heifer calves were in high demand, topping at £820 twice, firstly from L & H Kennedy, Barron House Farm, Gilsland, and secondly by A & A Hogg & Son, Milnholm Farm, Langholm.

A very good entry forward for the second days trading at Newcastleton Mart with the calf sale peaking at £935 for a Limousin Heifer from Messrs I & G Aitchison, Douglas Square, Newcastleton. Topping the steer section was Messrs C Goodfellow, Mains Farm, Newcastleton with an Aberdeen Angus selling to £920.

Double the entry could have been sold, with vendors leaving highly delighted with their returns. Another positive sale at Newcastleton Mart which attracts many repeat customers.

On Tuesday 25th October, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their great Annual Special sale of Blue Grey heifers and on Wednesday 26th saw Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental bullocks go under the hammer at Newcastleton Mart.

DAY ONE

The first day’s trading saw four in-calf heifers from annual consigners Messrs Wallace, Farney Shields, Hexham receiving the top call of £2000 per head, these were purchased by regular buyers Messrs Davidson, Adderstonshiels, Hawick. Hedgley Farms, Alnwick also sold in-calf heifers to £1580 and were purchased by Messrs Hume, Sundhope Farm, Selkirk.

In the bulling heifer section, a joint top of £1400 was achieved firstly by Messrs McTurk, Barlaes, Castle Douglas for their pen of five and secondly Messrs Ions, High Thorneyburn , Hexham with their pen of eight, all of the aforementioned were purchased by Dunstall Estate, Burton of Trent. Messrs Laurie, Snowden Close, Brampton sold the top priced cow and calf which was a second calver with a bull calf at foot, achieving £1300 and was purchased by Messrs Graham, Solmain Farm.

The sale total for Blue Grey heifers, from suckled calves to in calf heifers averaged £990.40 overall.

A very good entry forward for the second days trading at Newcastleton Mart with the calf sale peaking at £1000 for a Limousin cross stirk from Messrs Osborne, Park Head Farm, Carlisle. Others sold to £905 and £900 from Messrs Aitchison, The Side Farm, Newcastleton. Galloways sold to £870 from Messrs Jackson, The Roan, Newcastleton. Whitebred sold again to £870 from Messrs Harding, Nickies Hill, Brampton. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £860 from Messrs Goodfellow, Mains Farm, Newcastleton and the same price was achieved for a Beef Shorthorn from Messrs J Butler, Kirndean, Newcastleton.

In the heifer section top overall was a superb Limousin cross from Messrs Neve, Haining House, Brampton for a pen of four receiving £925. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £840 for two from Messrs Goodfellow, Mains Farm. Many more could have been sold.

Outwith the store cattle Messrs Mitchinson, Leahaugh, Newcastleton also held a part dispersal of their suckler cows. The top price was £1280 for an Aberdeen Angus cross with an Angus bull calf at foot.

On Tuesday 27th & Wednesday 28th October 2015, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their great Annual Special two day sale of 901 Blue Grey in calf, bulling and heifer calves on the 27th and on Wednesday 28th October the second day saw 426 Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental bullocks and heifers go under the hammer at Newcastleton Mart.

The first day saw an overall average of £43.83 for the Blue Grey females. 425 Bulling Heifers averaged £841 & 73 In-Calf Heifers averaged £1489.44. The top overall price achieved was £1800 for twelve in calf heifers on three different occasions, exhibited by Messrs Wallace, Farney Shields, Ninebanks, Hexham, the first pen of four were knocked down to G & S Holdings, Stoneygarth, Little Asby, the second pen of four was purchased by J Davidson & Son, Adderstone Shiels, Hawick and finally the third pen was also purchased by G & S Holdings.

In the bulling heifer section a top of £1260 was achieved on two occasions, the first for a pen of 2 from annual consignors Mr JRF Pattinson, Hot Bank Farm, Bardon Mill, Hexham and knocked down to J Baxter, Kiln Hill and the second for a pen of 4 heifers from A Murray & Sons, Sewing Shields, Hexham and purchased by Clova Farms, Pitlinie, Carnoustie.

The second day saw 343 sell with steers averaging £579.49 and heifers levelling out at £643.03, all classes met a flying trade and vendors left happy with the day’s trading. The day was topped at £990 for an Aberdeen Angus steer from Messrs Goodfellow, Mains Farm, Newcastleton, whilst heifers were seen to top at £890 again for an Aberdeen Angus from this same vendor.

October 28, 2014 On Tuesday 28th & Wednesday 29th October 2014, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their great Annual Special two day sale of 684 Blue Grey in calf, bulling and heifer calves on the 28th and on Wednesday 29th October the second day saw 366 Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental bullocks and heifers go under the hammer at Newcastleton Mart.

The first day saw an overall average of £989.18 for the Blue Grey females which saw a rise on the year of £55. The top overall price achieved was £2100 for twelve in calf heifers on three different occasions, vendors of these quality animals were Messrs Wallace, Farneyshields, Hexham, the first pen of four were knocked down to Messrs Davidson, Alderstone Shields, Hawick, the second pen of four was purchased by Messrs Sharp, Heriot Mill, Heriot and finally the third pen was purchased by Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm.

In the bulling heifer section a top of £1550 was achieved for a pen of 6 from annual consignors Messrs Ions, High Thorneyburn, Hexham. The trade throughout was exceptional and the ringside has never been seen so busy with purchasers forward from all four home nations.

The second day saw 366 sell with averages once again achieving a rise, with steers averaging £674.12 a rise of £58.14 and heifers levelling out at £678.76 a rise of £54.37, all classes met a flying trade and vendors left happy with the day’s trading. The day was topped at £1100 for an Aberdeen Angus steer from Messrs Goodfellow, Mains, Newcastleton, whilst heifers were seen to top at £910 again for an Aberdeen Angus from this same vendor and finally bulls peaked at £900 for two Limousin crosses from Messrs Aitchison, Douglas Square, Newcastleton.

NEWCASTLETON TWO DAY SUCKLED CALF SALE

On Tuesday 29th & Wednesday 30th October 2013 Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Special two day sale of 1029 Blue Grey, Galloway and other continental calves at Newcastleton Auction Mart. The first day saw the sale of 580 Blue Grey in-calf heifers, Bulling and heifer calves go under the hammer with averages showing a rise of £137.18, averaging out at £934.18. Highlight of the day came from Messrs Wallace of Farneyshields, Ninebanks, Hexham selling the overall top prices of the day. Showing his best pen of four Blue Grey heifers in calf selling to £1880 per head. Messrs Wallace’s consignment of 32 heifers averaged a staggering £1674 per head, In the bulling heifer section top price achieved was £1350 for a pen of three from Messrs Hogg of Milnholm, Langholm.

The second day saw the sale of 449 Blue Grey, Galloway and Continental cross bullocks and heifers which saw bullocks average rise by £74, averaging £615.98 and cross heifers rose by £78 and averaged £624.39. All classes were a flying trade with a top price of £960 being achieved for a pen of Limousin bullocks from Messrs Aitcheson, The Side, Newcastleton, and the same home also sold the top priced Limousin heifer peaking at £935. It was very pleasing to see averages showing a rise on the year which was all helped by the upturn in the weather throughout the year resulting in all classes of stock holding better condition and with increased interest in traditional breeds certainly helped with many new purchasers forward.

On Tuesday 30th & Wednesday 31st October 2012 Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Special two day sale of Blue Grey, Galloway and other continental calves at Newcastleton Auction Mart.

The two-day sale once again proved a success, with a great attendance of vendors bringing quality cattle to offer to an ever increasing ringside of buyers.

The top price of the day was achieved by annual supporters of the mart; Messrs Wallace, Farneyshields, Hexham whose 31-strong consignment averaged £1477, including a sale leading £1600, reached seven times. Bulling heifers peaked at £1120 for a pen of 5 from Messrs Kyle, Spoutbank, Carlisle. The second day saw cattle notably younger than usual, yet the impact on trade was negligible and all classes were easily sold.

On Tuesday 25th & Wednesday 26th October 2011 Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Special two day sale of Blue Grey cattle along with Galloways and other continental calves. The nationally renowned 2 day sale once again proved to be a marvellous show of hill bred cattle with the top lines and names in each breed and section presenting their cattle to the largest ring side of keen bidders seen at the mart for some time.

In-calf Blue Grey heifers smashed the day’s top price when Messrs Wallace of Farney Shields sold a pen of 5 to a fantastic £1450 a piece, whilst the second day saw a top price of £1000 for a superb bullock from Messrs Telford, Hole O Lyne. Both days saw averages soar way past last years with heifers averaging £97.50 more and steers rising by £93.33.
