JTHS 2017-2018 Points of Pride Joliet Township High School is proud to highlight student and staff achievements from the past academic school year based on over 300 press releases sent to local media outlets.

Academic Achievement Advanced Placement JTHS offers 20 Advanced Placement and 30 Dual Credit courses that students can take as early as their first year in high school. These courses allow students to earn college credit while enrolled in high school. Since 2010, JTHS has experienced exponential growth in the number of students taking AP courses, exams, and scores of 3 or higher. The College Board recognized this growth in 2017 when it honored JTHS as the Advanced Placement School District of the Year for being the nation’s leader among small school districts in simultaneously expanding access to Advanced Placement courses and improving student performance.

Outstanding AP Exam Performance Thirty-five students earned the recognition of AP Scholar, twenty-one earned AP Scholar with Honors, and one earned AP Scholar with Distinction. These students scored a 4 or higher on the AP Exam that was taken in the spring of 2017. Successful AP Exam scores can provide students with college credit.

Advanced Placement Boot Camp To prepare students for the rigors of AP and honors-level coursework, JTHS offers a two-week AP Summer Boot Camp to freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the subject areas of English, social science and mathematics.

Illinois State Scholars Eighty-nine students from the graduating class of 2018 earned the distinction of State Scholar for possessing strong academic potential based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank. State Scholars rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors in the state.

2018 Summa Cum Laude Graduates One hundred twenty-six seniors graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. Senior students who obtained this status earned a cumulative 4.00 grade point average or higher after seven semesters.

SAT Scores for the Class of 2018 The average SAT score for the top 10 percent of students in the Class of 2018 who took the SAT was 1287. The top 20 percent of students from the class of 2018 taking the SAT test had an average score of 1211. The SAT score range is 400 to 1600. The state of Illinois benchmark score for college readiness is 1080. College readiness indicates mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards. JTHS had 1,245 students who took the SAT test from the Class of 2018.

ACT Pacesetter Thirty-one students achieved an ACT Composite score of 30 or higher after taking the spring exam.

National Merit Scholarship Commended Students Hunter Thoms, Madeline Blaauw and Alfreda Hogan were named Commended Students for the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of over 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2017.

Awards & Recognition Scholarships JTHS guidance counselors and staff assist students in securing grants and scholarships for post- secondary study. Annually, JTHS students secure over seven million dollars in grants and scholarships.

Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry Top Students Each year the top 25 seniors from Central and West High School are honored at the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce Education Committee’s Top Student Banquet.

USF MERIT Scholar Carina Saucedo was selected as the 2018 scholarship recipient in the Multicultural Education Recruitment in Teaching (MERIT) program at University of St. Francis (USF). MERIT is a partnership between USF, JTHS, Joliet Public Schools District 86 and the Joliet business community.

US Senate Page Nathaniel Schultz was appointed and sponsored by Senator Richard Durbin for the highly selective position of United States Senate Page, of which only 30 are selected throughout the entire country.

JTHS Academies & Programs Freshman Academy Ninth grade students enter the Freshman Academy, a small school-within-a-school, which provides a safe and nurturing environment. Freshmen begin the day a period earlier than the upperclassmen, which allows them to take an additional elective or receive support in math or reading.

Career Academies In their sophomore year, students enter a career-themed academy designed to increase student achievement by offering a small learning environment within a large school setting. The five JTHS Academies are the Academy of Arts and Communications; the Academy of Business Management and Information Systems; the Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; the Academy of Health and Medicine; and the Academy of Human Services.

Online Course Offerings An online Course Offerings Guide allows students and parents to navigate career-themed Programs of Study that assist with course selections. Similar to a college major, Programs of Study are recommended Page 3 of 13

course sequences aligned to a student’s career interest that provide a successful transition to post- secondary education or the workplace.

Job Shadowing Sophomores complete a four-hour Job Shadowing experience relevant to their career interest and academy. As students observe employees on-site, they gain an insight into the abilities and aptitudes necessary for success in their career path.

Advisory Program During advisory, a core group of 20-25 students and their faculty advisor meet once a day for 25 minutes. This allows advisory teachers and students to form relationships that focus on goal setting, academic achievement, student involvement, college/career preparation and overall success.

College Preparation 24th Annual Betty Mahone Joliet Area Black College Fair JTHS students attended the 24th Annual Betty Mahone Joliet Area Black College Fair. The College Fair offered students the opportunity to talk with representatives and alumni from more than 20 Historically Black Colleges/Universities.

7th Annual Latino Empowerment Conference JTHS students attended the 7thAnnual Latino Empowerment Conference at hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

JJC Black Teen Leadership Summit JTHS students attended the Black Teen Leadership Summit at Joliet Junior College hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

US Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference JTHS students attended the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference and Career & College Recruitment Fair at the Sheraton Grand Chicago.

Central Talent Search Program Joliet Central High School collaborated with Joliet Junior College to establish the Educational Talent Search program that assists 500 Joliet Central students from disadvantaged backgrounds to increase high school graduation and college enrollment.

ExxonMobil Career Exploration In partnership with ExxonMobil, eighty JTHS students participated in career exploration during one-on- one lunch conversations with members of ExxonMobil staff during onsite visits to the refinery in February and March. A variety of careers were represented among the ExxonMobil employees including engineering, nursing, finance, pipefitting, operations, administration, maintenance technician and more.

Camp College JTHS partnered with University of St. Francis to host a free one-day workshop in June covering the fundamentals of the college application process.

21st Century Technology & Programs 1:1 Technology All students receive netbook computers, providing educational access beyond the walls of the classroom. Teachers have adjusted instructional delivery, using technology to motivate and engage students in learning.

Wireless Access Full wireless access is available in all buildings, allowing students to become active participants in an online learning environment that supports electronic collaboration and communication.

Student Help Desk Central and West Campus Technology Help Desks provide support to students experiencing technical issues with their netbook computers. Students serve as Help Desk Technicians, which provides an authentic, real-world experience.

Blended Learning JTHS offers 22 blended learning courses where students meet two days a week as a class and the remaining instruction is facilitated online by the teacher.

JT Learn The online JT Learn platform allows teachers to upload assignments, facilitate online discussions, post grades, and plan interactive lessons. Assignments are submitted electronically, and students receive instant feedback and support. This platform is similar to online learning environments in college.

Home Access Center Home Access Center gives parents and students the ability to monitor progress online and through a mobile app. Grades on assignments, tests, attendance, and discipline records can be viewed in real time.

Individualized Career Plan The Individual Career Plan is an online system that stores standardized testing data, allowing students and teachers to collaboratively review scores and set goals to improve academic performance. Students work with teachers to establish college and career goals that directly relate to their Career Academy.

Community & Parent Engagement Parent University Parent University provides important information to parents and students. Events include a keynote speaker and breakout sessions that feature a variety of workshops with topics such as College Applications 101, College Scholarships, Career Cruising, Advanced Placement, and Academy Selection.

Joliet Region Interfaith Education Council The Joliet Region Interfaith Education Council is a partnership between JTHS and faith-based organizations established to promote and encourage the use of community and school resources. Religious and community leaders meet monthly with the superintendent, principals, and JTHS leaders.

Youth Experiencing Success in School (YESS) Students have access to on-site mental health and support services through the Youth Experiencing Success in School (YESS) program. Community agencies are provided with space on campus to provide Page 5 of 13

Lurie Children’s Hospital Partnership To support student behavioral health, JTHS established a partnership with Lurie Children’s Hospital to form Behavioral Health Teams at the campuses that are well versed in identifying students in need of social and emotional support.

Community Outreach JTHS leaders participate in community organizations such as the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rotary, Kiwanis, Zonta Club of Joliet, Council for Working Women, YMCA, and the United Way of Will County, just to name a few. Staff attend neighborhood block parties and community events to build relationships. Community members, parents and students participate in JTHS Strategic Planning Page 6 of 13

and Improvement Teams to provide valuable input. Over 600 invitations were sent to community partners for the Salute to Service Partnership Event, which indicates the high volume of partnerships established by the District.

Veteran’s Ceremony Since 2011, veterans are honored at the annual Joliet Central High School Veteran’s Ceremony. The ceremony is an emotional tribute open to the public and includes full participation from the school’s JROTC students and staff.

District History Fair An annual History Fair is held for students in World Affairs and US History classes. Students research and present persuasive arguments that they deliver to the volunteer community judges.

Women & Girls Health Expo The National Hook-Up of Black Women and the Zonta Club of Joliet hosted the Women & Girls Health Expo at Joliet Central. The free public event provided educational programming and access to community resources.

Coffee & Community Conversations Coffee and Conversations are held throughout the year at various locations in the Joliet community. Community members and parents can meet Board of Education members, key JTHS leaders, and the Superintendent to engage in conversation surrounding the topic of education.

African American Read-In JTHS and the National Hook Up of Black Women host the African American Read-In every year in February. Participants celebrate African American history by reading short passages of work by African American authors.

Central Kermés Celebration Central hosted their third annual Kermés, a celebratory festival to honor the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez. The "Sí Se Puede" (Yes We Can) Festival was a free event open to alumni, parents, students, staff and the public.

Central Football Community Meetings These meetings were designed to build positive community relations and partnerships that increase student participation in the football program. Coach Boyter provided information about Central's football program and facilitated community/parent dialogue.

Strategy 6.2 Committee The purpose of this committee is to accomplish the Strategy 6.2 Action Plan, which calls for the creation and implementation of a family and community group that aggressively builds relationships between District 204 families and staff in order to enhance the educational experience of all students.

Central alumnus Juan Gloria received an INSPRA Award of Excellence in the “Community Member” category for his support of JTHS Hispanic students through family engagement and communication.

District Discipline Committee The District Discipline Committee is comprised of staff, parents, and students who review and recommend changes to District policies, including bullying, harassment, and disciplinary codes.

Family Engagement Liaisons The Central and West Family Engagement Liaisons serve as the bridge between the school and home by: • Assisting parents/guardians with connecting their student to resources for tutoring, community service, college, and more • Serving as the initial point of contact for parent/guardian concerns and dynamics correlated to student progress • Providing referrals for support services in the school and identifying resources in the community • Translating and Interpreting • Providing Home Access Center assistance

Summer Programs Summer Bridge Program The Summer Bridge Program is available to incoming freshmen who need academic support in the areas of literacy and math. The program allows student to experience the high school setting prior to the first day of school, while receiving academic enrichment.

Advanced Placement Summer Tutoring A two-week tutoring program is available to freshmen and sophomore students whose scores are near Advanced Placement eligibility. The summer tutoring program is designed to prepare students for the academic challenges of honors-level curriculum using the College Board Spring Board curriculum.

Summer School The Summer School program begins in June and offers a variety of high school courses for students looking to get ahead or recover credit. Blended learning courses are also available.

Summer Sports Camps Beginning in June, a series of summer sports camps are available at both campuses and at locations throughout the community such as Crest Hill Lanes and Inwood Athletic Club.

JTHS Summer Academy for 6th, 7th & 8th graders A free Summer Academy is available for future JTHS students going in to 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. The summer programs engage young students in fun projects centered around early exposure to the five JTHS Career Academies and career exploration.

District Awards & Achievements JTHS Child Care Center The Infant Child Care Center received the Gold Circle of Quality designation from ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s quality rating and improvement system for early learning providers.

JTHS received the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for high standards of financial reporting and accountability through analysis of the District’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending in 2017. This is the 32nd year JTHS has participated in the COE program, a true reflection of the District’s commitment to fiscal integrity.

Character Education Students receive an award-winning character education program unique to JTHS. The attributes of confidence, compassion, respect, responsibility, tolerance, integrity, and perseverance are taught to students with a creative and visual approach.

Quality Teachers & Staff Joliet Area Great Teachers Award JTHS teachers Kristin Blake, Cassie Crim, Mary Spata, and Lauren Von Holst received the 2018 Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Joliet Area Great Teachers Award.

Conn-Selmer VIP for Music Education Band Director Don Stinson accepted an invitation to become a Conn-Selmer VIP for music education. By accepting this invitation, Stinson joins a flourishing network of the country’s top music educators.

Central Legend Inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Former Central wrestling coach Eural “Mac” McLaughlin received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award and was inducted into the Illinois Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Communications Specialist Wins INSPRA Award of Excellence Communications Specialist Jordan Smuksta won an INSPRA Award of Excellence for her creation of the District’s Digital Signage campaign.

Fresh Films Tech Grant Teacher Joe Hoyt won a 2017 Subway Fresh Films Tech Grant to purchase technology that support the 1:1 initiative.

Band Directors Selected for International Bandmasters’ Fraternity Band Directors Don Stinson and Eric Wellman were selected for membership in the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters’ Fraternity, a nonprofit fraternity organized to recognize and honor outstanding band directors worldwide.

Kermes Committee awarded JJC’s Voz de Valor Award The Joliet Junior College Latinos Unidos Club awarded the Central Kermes Committee with the 2018 Voz de Valor Award for their commitment to the Latinx community and culture.

Students in the Health & Medicine Academy can obtain Illinois Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) through a partnership with Joliet Junior College. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive two high school credits, 6 JJC credits, and are eligible to take the Illinois state competency exam.

Comp TIA A + Computer Tech Certification Students can become Comp TIA A + certified computer repair technicians through completion of JTHS coursework.

Pro Start National Certification Pro Start National Certification of Achievement for Culinary Arts is offered through the National Restaurant Educational Foundation.

Cosmetology Certification A partnership with Salon Professionals Cosmetology School provides students with a jump start into the career of cosmetology.

Gateways Early Childhood Education Credential Level 1 Certification Gateways Early Childhood Education Credential Level 1 Certification is available and hands-on teaching experience is provided to students through the Tiger Tots and Steel Tots community daycare programs located on campus.

JROTC Students can enroll in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) in lieu of Physical Education or take JROTC as an elective course. Students who satisfactorily complete all four years of JROTC obtain a Military Training Certificate.

JT Credit Union Central and West have student-run Abri Credit Union branches located inside their schools. Students gain real-world experience as Abri Credit Union employees.

Chicagoland Speedway Interdisciplinary Project and JTHS created a new interdisciplinary curriculum project. Students in AP Environmental Science class partnered with Ducks Unlimited to install and maintain Wood Duck boxes at the Des Plaines Conversation area. JTHS Construction Occupation students manufactured the boxes.

Project Lead the Way Engineering Program JTHS offered four Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses. PLTW is the nation's leading provider of STEM programs. Through a world-class curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW helps students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.

Culinary Arts Students Participate in ProStart Invitational A team of Joliet West High School Culinary Arts students participated in the Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation ProStart Invitational ProStart Invitational. Students created a three- course menu that was evaluated and judged by local culinary professionals.

Advanced Integrated Maintenance Program (AIM) Program Seniors enrolled in the AIM program take a series of 4 dual credit, college level courses held at Joliet Page 10 of 13

Junior College and receive two high school credits and 13 college credits in the subject areas of HVAC; Industrial Maintenance; Basic Wiring, and Circuit Design; and Industrial Fluid Power.

Activities & Athletics Activity & Athletic Offerings JTHS offers over 40 IHSA/SWSC athletics and activities at each campus and over 30 building-based special interest clubs.

State-of-the-Art Athletic Facilities State-of-the art field houses are fully equipped with a six-lane, 160-meter Mondo track with pole vaulting areas and jump pits; 12 full-size badminton courts; 3 volleyball courts; 2 baseball batting cages; and 3 full-size basketball courts.

Intramural Offerings Students participate in a variety of intramural activities throughout the school year. Intramural offerings vary yearly by campus and have included dodgeball, soccer, Powder Puff football, and more.

West Speech Team State Qualifiers West Speech Team members Laney Naling (Original Oratory), Casey Snow and Tony Nardi (Humorous Duet Acting) advanced to the IHSA State Speech Tournament.

Alternate School Chess Team Sportsmanship Award The Joliet Alternate High School Chess Team attended the CAAEL (Chicago Area Alternative Education League) Chess Tournament and won the Sportsmanship Award.

Chess State Tournament The Joliet Central and West Chess Teams competed at the State Chess Tournament, with Central winning the 2018 SPC Chess Conference Championship.

Joliet West Symphonic Band Music-For-All National Concert Band Festival The West Symphonic Band performed at the prestigious Music for All National Concert Band Festival. Joliet West was one of only 26 bands from across the country that were invited.

Joliet West Mathletes successful at Regional Math Meet During the ICTM Regional Math Meet, Adele Pelzer and Summit Kumar won third place in the freshman/sophomore competition. Mary Pelzer and Anna Nguyen won third place in the junior/senior competition. Mary Pelzer and Maddie Blaauw won third place in an oral competition, and Adele Pelzer earned a fifth place individual finish to advance to the state competition.

Joliet West Mathletes successful at JJC Invitational At the JJC Invitational, the Joliet West Mathletes won in several categories. The senior team and junior team earned first place finishes in written competitions. The freshman team earned second place in the freshmen written competition. The graphing calculator team earned first place. Oralist Mary Pelzer earned both first and second place in separate oral topics.

Joliet West Science Olympiad Team earn medals at regionals The West Science Olympiad Varsity Team took 7th place in their division and the JV team took 4th place at the Neuqua Valley Regional Competition.

West Varsity Scholastic Bowl Third in Conference West Varsity Scholastic Bowl placed third in conference at Oswego East. Mary Pelzer and Freda Hogan placed in the top 10 for answering the most toss-up questions correctly.

West JROTC Drill Team and Color Guard West JROTC Tiger Battalion Drill Team and Color Guard brought home seven trophies after competing in the Chicago Citywide Competition.

Shaw Media Athletic Awards Central student athletes Maddy Palmer and Ryan Saunders were invited to Shaw Media’s regional Most Valuable Athlete Awards Celebration at the NIU Convocation Center, honoring their athletic achievements.

West Health Occupations Students at National Competition West Illinois Health Occupations Students of America [HOSA] students from the Health and Medicine Academy took home 10 top-ten wins at the State Competition.

West Journalism Students Receive Medals at State JWHS students Kelly Rappaport, Louie Mendoza, and Mykiyah Jackson earned medals at the IHSA State Journalism Competition, with seventy-four schools participating and well over three hundred students competing.

Central Symphonic Band Competes at 2018 IL SuperState Band Competition The Joliet Central Symphonic Band competed in the SuperState Band Competition at the University of Illinois in May. This competition is the band equivalent of playing in the state finals for a varsity sport.

Central Band Earns 1st Place at Smoky Mountain Music Festival The Central Band competed at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, receiving a superior rating and earning 1st place.

Students Win Top Awards at SPC Literary Festival Winning the highest honor in the Dramatic Scene Category, Joliet West High School student Diego Mateo received the Critic's Choice Award, along with 3rd place in the Poetry category. Honorable mentions were awarded to Joliet West student Elaina (Laney) Naling in the Critical Essay and Personal Essay categories, and Amber Scheible in the Short Fiction category. Joliet Central High School student Rebecca Verchimak was awarded 1st place for her Critical Essay; and Beesan Salama was awarded 3rd place in the Personal Essay category.

JTHS Students Earn Medals in State Drafting Competition JTHS earned medals at the Illinois Design Educators Association (IDEA) State Competition at Illinois State University. JCHS student Sam Goin finished in 2nd place in Assembly Modeling and JCHS student Giovanni Mora finished in 3rd place in Intro to Board. Mt. Zion Youth Speaks Oratory Competition Awards Central student David Dillon placed first, West Student Alexus Trotter placed second, and West student Aaron Blankenship placed third at the Mt. Zion Youth Speaks Oratory Competition.

Joliet West Bass Fishing Finishes in Top 10 at IHSA Sectional The Joliet West High School Bass Fishing Team finished in the top 10 at the IHSA Bass Fishing Sectional held at the Des Plaines River Big Basin Marina.

JTHS Special Olympic Basketball Wins State Championship The JTHS Special Olympics Basketball Gold Team won the Group 5 State Championship, bringing home a gold medal for the first time in school history.

IHSA Academic Achievement Awards Nine Central, seven West and five district athletic teams earned the IHSA Academic Achievement Award for maintaining a team Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher throughout the athletic seasons. Teams who received this award include Central: Boys Cross Country, Girls Bowling, Girls Cross Country, Softball, Boys Track and Field, Girls Track and Field, Girls Volleyball, Girls Badminton & Girls Soccer; West: Boys Cross Country, Cheerleading, Dance, Girls Basketball, Girls Bowling, Girls Cross Country & Girls Volleyball; and JTHS: Boys Golf, Boys Swimming, Girls Golf, Girls Swimming, & Girls Tennis.
