It was followed by Because the Night and L.A.Noir: The Lloyd Hopkins Trilogy - Blood on the Moon Hill Although the novels are written in multiple perspectives and narrated omnisciently, the main character in all three is Lloyd Hopkins. It is during this riot that Hopkins kills his first man, a deranged armory sergeant who was hunting down and killing African Americans. Eighteen years later Hopkins is now a sergeant with the LAPD and has the highest number of arrests of any officer in the department's history. He is considered a genius by many of his associates for his uncanny ability to make intuitive leaps of logic when tracking down criminals. Soon his abilities are put to the test when he investigates the brutal murder of a woman who was disemboweled in her apartment. Hopkins quickly deduces that the person responsible for this murder has in fact been killing women since the late s, but has never been caught because he always changes his modus operandi. A subplot of the novel involves Hopkins' relationship with his family. He adores his three daughters and deeply loves his wife, though he is chronically unfaithful to her. Because the Night wife loves Lloyd, but begins to realize that his habits are not healthy for their children, particularly his propensity for telling them about the cases that he has worked on. Noir is essentially the Lloyd Hopkins trilogy. Here are my reviews for the three novels: 1. Aug 01, Patrick O'Neil rated it really liked it. James Ellroy's L. First published in the early '80's, Ellroy's Los Angeles Nior trilogy is a macabre homage to ultra violent LA cops, and insanity of the times. His protagonist, Sergeant Lloyd Hopkins, is out of his fucking gourd. He's a racist, womanizing, homophobe, cold blooded killer and adulterous father of three daughters. But there's a beauty in the juxtaposition of repulsion and collaborat James Ellroy's L. But there's a beauty in the juxtaposition of repulsion and collaboration the reader feels for Hopkins. You hate him, yet you grudgingly admire his Suicide Hill to do whatever the hell he wants. He is the kind of cop the tabloids love to canonize, and the equally corrupt politicians blame for all of society's problems. The city of Los Angeles, the streets of Hollywood, and the prevailing deterioration of urban society of the 's all play integral parts of the plot and Ellroy exploits the shit out of them. Although I don't consider these three books to be Ellory's best, I did find it interesting to read his earlier Because the Night in comparison to his later more successful novels, and to take note of where and how he honed his craft. I can see where his clipped official "dialogue" started to take form. Along with his unbelievably violent images, his Because the Night street lingo, and use of police stats — material which became the basis for such work as American Tabloid — a book I feel is one of his best — and of course the successful L. Yet, if you can't put aside the repulsiveness of Ellroy's love affair with all things grotesquely macho and conservatively right-wing, then don't read this book — it will just piss you off. Which I am sure Ellroy would be happy to know that it did. View 2 comments. The more I read James Ellroy, the more I'm convinced he's one of the late 20th century greats when it comes to crime Suicide Hill - sensational trio of cop books set in Suicide Hill early 80s, with gruesome murders and violence a plenty; and above all Ellroy's style punching through. May 26, Luke rated it really liked it. Great crime. Just straight-up and true, gritty, honest and brutally-brilliant crime fiction. Ellroy's Lloyd Hopkins Because the Night trilogy does it again. L.A.Noir: The Lloyd Hopkins Trilogy - Blood on the Moon 17, Debbie rated it really liked it Shelves: fictionnoircrime. As in many of the Ellroy books I've read, the cops are as dark and twisted and the criminals they pursue. They all are driven by their own demons and are not often likable characters. Lloyd Hopkins is no exception. His past molded him into the man he has become - a brilliant cr This book includes all three volumes of Ellroy's Lloyd Hopkins trilogy Blood on the Moon, Because the Night and Suicide Hill. His past molded Because the Night into the man he has become - a brilliant crimefighter who often resorts to unacceptable tactics in pursuit of his prey. His home life is beginning to come apart at the seams and his adulterous behavior taints his marriage and his career. No one has put the L.A.Noir: The Lloyd Hopkins Trilogy - Blood on the Moon together until Hopkins gets involved. His pursuit of the Hollywood Slaughterer eventually leads him into a life-threatening situation from which he emerges a haunted man. This time Because the Night is sent to investigate the disappearance of Suicide Hill Herzog, a hero cop who has disappeared.
