32 2005 California Golden Bear Baseball 2004 Season in Review

David Nicholson, drafted in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, had an outstanding 2004 season, leading Cal with a .367 batting average and a team-high 14 doubles.

2005 California Golden Bear Baseball 33 2004 SEASON IN REVIEW Center fielder David Weiner was honorable mention All-Pac-10 after ending his senior campaign batting .338 with nine home runs and 43 RBI.

Ingram was Cal’s top reliever, leading the Pac-10 with 10 saves and 30 appearances. His 10 saves were also a school-record for single-season saves and he finished with 19 career saves, second on the Bears’ all-time save list, and 85 appearances, eighth on the Cal all-time games list. Ingram concluded the year with 49 in 50.7 innings and a 3.02 ERA. Cal’s leading hitter in 2004, Nicholson finished with a team-best .367 average with a team-high 50 runs, 77 hits, 14 doubles and .438 on-base percentage. He was fifth in the Pac-10 in batting average and ninth in hits. Nicholson also had a career-high 18-game hitting streak during the year and .360 with runners in scoring position. Weiner had the best season of his college campaign, batting .338 with a team-high nine home runs and 43 RBI. He finished the year on a 13-game hitting streak from Apr. 20 to May 30, going 19-for-53 (.358) with three doubles, a triple, a and eight RBI to wrap-up his Cal career. Weiner also had a 15-game hitting streak during the season, hit a three-run homer against Washington on his 23rd birthday and finished with a team-best .367 average with runners in scoring position.

STRONG INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES, ROAD SUCCESSES HIGHLIGHT 2004 he 2004 California baseball team did not have the type of season it had hoped, finishing 25-31 overall and 9-15 in the Pac-10, but the TGolden Bears had some stellar individual efforts and eight players went on to sign professional contracts. Team highlights did include, however, Cal winning a Pac-10 series on the road at Arizona State (first time since 1995) and USC (first time since 1986). The Bears had four players – sophomore right-hander Adam Gold, junior right-hander Jesse Ingram, junior infielder David Nicholson and senior center fielder David Weiner – selected 2004 Pacific-10 Conference Honor- able Mention. Gold finished the year 6-7 with a 4.47 ERA and led the Bears with 89 strikeouts (eighth in the Pac-10) in 94.7 innings pitched (ninth in the Pac- 10). He was the Feb. 23 NCBWA National Co- of the Week after being one out away from a no-hitter at Fresno State Feb. 21, throwing a complete game with a career-high 10 strikeouts. 34 2005 California Golden Bear Baseball The 2004 season also represented the end of the fine careers of senior right- hander Matt Brown, senior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich and senior Brian Horwitz – all key performers as freshmen when the Bears advanced to the 2001 NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Brown finished with 16 career saves (fourth on the Cal all-time list), 94 appearances (sixth on the Cal all- time list) and 211 strikeouts (eighth on the Cal all-time list). Dragicevich is the school record-holder for career assists (617) and concluded his college career sixth on the Bears’ games list (220), 10th on the at-bat list (728) and 10th on the doubles list (42). Horwitz, despite battling injuries throughout his career, finished fifth of the Cal career at-bats list (782) and sev- enth in career hits (236). He is also the Bears’ school record-holder for consecu- tive game hitting streak (23 in 2001) and is tied for the school record with eight RBI in a game (Feb. 14, 2003 versus Texas Pan-American). Another player who saw a fine college career come to end was senior catcher Chris Grossman, who batted .306 with nine doubles, three home runs and 32 Matt Brown concluded his career on the Cal all-time Top 10 list for saves (16, fourth), appearances RBI in 2004, but missed the final month (94, sixth) and strikeouts (211, eighth).

of the season with a dislocated shoulder. He had been a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award in 2003 after hitting .341 with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 45 RBI. Cal had six players drafted and two sign as free agents in the professional ranks. In the first day of the Major League Amateur Draft, Nicholson, junior left fielder Justin Nelson and Dragicevich were selected. Nicholson was drafted in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Nelson was selected in the 15th round, and Dragicevich was picked in the 18th round, by the Colorado Rockies. In 2004, Nelson batted .286 with nine doubles, three in triples, seven home runs and was second on the team with 34 RBI. He also had a team-high 10 multiple RBI games and recorded a .500 and .389 on-base percentage. In the second day of the draft, Brown was drafted in the 22nd round by the Houston Astros, junior right-hander Kyle Crist was selected in the 34th round by the Kansas City Royals and Ingram was picked in the 36th round by the Texas Rangers. Horwitz later signed with the and junior right-hander Mike Padgett signed with the Texas Rangers. The Bears shined in the academic arena as 12 players were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team. Senior right-hander Blake Read was first team Pac-10 All-Academic. Dragicevich, Ingram and junior infielder Matt Einspahr were second team Pac-10 All-Academic, while Brown, sophomore Allen Craig, Gold, Horwitz, sophomore Robert Nesbitt, Padgett, sophomore Alex Trafton and Weiner were honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic. The Bears’ 2004 team award winners included Nicholson as the recipient of the Clint Evans Award as the team’s most valuable player, and the winner of the Robert A. Roos Batting Cup as the team’s leading hitter (.367). Weiner was the winner of the Edwin E. Lord, Jr. Award as the Bears’ most inspirational player, while Gold was the recipient of the George Wolfman Award as the team’s most improved player. Ingram was the recipient of the team’s Most Valuable Pitcher Award, and Read was the winner of the Coaches’ Award. In a new award for the 2004 season, freshman catcher Garrett Bussiere was the recipient of the Freshman of the Year after hitting .307 with seven doubles, two triples, five home runs and 21 RBI in 36 games. Four-year starter Brian Horwitz is the school record-holder for consecutive game hitting streak (23) and single-game RBI (eight versus Texas Pan-American in 2003).
