On the Water, on the Vine, on the Plate

Kia ora and welcome to New Zealand the youngest country on earth.

New Zealand’s diverse and dramatic landscape draws many visitors to our shores. From fiords to rainforests, ocean beaches to volcanic cones, the relatively untouched landscape is breathtaking, but what makes the visit so special for many is the people they meet.

Maori people believe in the concept of ‘Manaakitanga’ this loosely translates as ‘hospitality’ – a concept that Kiwi people have embraced as part of the New Zealand experience. Kiwis are a friendly bunch and the care, engagement and hospitality we show our guests is based on pride and a genuine belief that this country offers something of everything.

New Zealand is regularly rated as one of the world’s preferred destinations not just because of its dramatic scenery, wide open spaces, extreme adventure, clean air, enticing food and wine, creativity and flair but also because of the ‘can do’ attitude.

Haere Mai. Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Customs and MAF requirements On arrival you will need to complete both customs and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) requirements before you can officially enter New Zealand. MAF is responsible for agriculture, horticulture and forestry, safe food, a protected environment, the wise use of the land and the creation of clean, green product. MAF protect farms and wildlife from imported pests and diseases by minimising the number of foreign pests and diseases entering New Zealand.

You will be required by law to declare any food or organic material you are carrying. It is important not to ignore this as significant fines can be given to those who do.

PRE - 4 nights/5 days: Thursday 3 Nov to Monday 7 Nov, 2011

Marlborough / Nelson: On the Water, on the Vine, on the Plate At the top of the , the sunny Marlborough and Nelson regions boast fine wine, gourmet food, golden beaches and a unique artistic vibe. The Marlborough region is New Zealand’s largest wine-growing region and is internationally recognized for its award-winning sauvignon blanc. Nelson is particularly famous for its fresh seafood, as well as being a vibrant and artistic town, with more working artists than any other region. Both Marlborough and Nelson also offer multi- day coastal walks through four national parks.

Itinerary We’ll fly across the Cook Strait to Nelson to visit boutique wineries, local artists and a museum featuring wearable art. We’ll spend a day in Abel Tasman National Park and have a choice of kayaking or catamaran cruising along the Coast to the Tonga Island Seal Colony with options for short hikes. Then it’s on to the Marlborough Sounds where we’ll take a carbon-neutral cruise in search of dolphins in their natural environment, with an option to swim with the playful creatures, followed by a visit to the Lochmara Lodge Wildlife Recovery Center. We’ll take an afternoon hike or kayak trip along part of the Queen Charlotte Track, which hugs the coastline and dips in and out of bays, and take a cruise to sample fresh-plucked greenshell mussels. Back on dry land enjoy a food and wine tour visiting a few of Marlborough’s 74 wineries along with boutique food producers. Delicious contemporary kiwi cuisine of these two regions will be a highlight.

Difficulty Rating: MODERATE

Story angles: • New world sauvignon blanc and the wineries of Marlborough. • Boutique food producers, including greenshell mussel farms. • Outdoor activities of Abel Tasman National Park and the Marlborough Sounds – swim with dolphins, kayak, hike. • Wearable art and the local art scene - Nelson is known for its wonderful light, which has lured many artists. • Lochmara Lodge – blends wildlife and art in an interesting way (lots of whimsical works on the 11-acre property, as well as a replica of an old bushman’s camp). The lodge runs a wildlife rehabilitation and captive breeding program. • The Boat Shed in Nelson has an interesting history – the building has been there (suspended over water) since 1890 and has held many different businesses. The current owner is an eccentric and fun character.

Unique photography opportunities: • Swimming with dolphins. • Nelson’s “McCahon” light (named after a well-known local artist who was instrumental in defining—and capturing—the area’s unique light). We’ll be staying in a great spot on the water and next to a peninsula; should be good opportunities for sunrise shots. • Wineries and vineyards.

Components requiring some exertion: • Kayaking in Abel Tasman – no previous experience required for the two-person kayaks, but the level of difficulty depends somewhat on the open water conditions. Alternate option: The Vista Cruise or Cruise & Walk includes a stop for hiking, which can be as short as 30-minute walk or a longer guided hike is available; the hikes are optional. • Swim with dolphins – takes place in open water (next to boat). Wetsuit, snorkel gear and fins provided. Alternate option: watch from the boat rather than jump in the water.

Special clothing or gear participants must bring: • Rain jacket overall, and warm/windproof jacket for mussel cruise. • Water shoes for kayaking are helpful. • Bathing suit for swimming with dolphins. • Sun block, sunglasses.

Please note: • This tour includes components featured on several full-day tours out of Wellington during the core convention.

Thursday 3 November Auckland to Nelson

Nelson Nelson is located at the top of the South Island, nestled in the northwest corner. The entire area is said to resemble the prow of the waka (canoe) of Maui, an important figure in Maori mythology, and was known by the Maori as Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui (the tip of the nose of the canoe of Maui). The landscape covers wide plains, rivers, golden sandy beaches, hills and mountains and is home to more working artists in Nelson than any other region in New Zealand. Nelson is also the country’s eighth largest wine region, and is a base for touring Abel Tasman National Park.
