THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES AUGUST ATTENTION TURNS TO FLAMINGO PARK If South Africa was to declare a “rest” period, then the month of August would be it. Cold, dry and dusty in the northern racing provinces of Gauteng and KZN and, typically sodden in the Western Cape (not this year, however, as the worst drought in living memory continues to wreak havoc in the southern-most tip of Africa), racing conditions are hardly ideal. Coupled with the annual AHS vaccination programme limited to the period between June and October (to lessen the likelihood of outbreaks) and the fact that the majority of visiting horses have now left KZN to return to their respective provinces for a rest, there is simply not a lot going on. There are two exceptions however. The exotically named Flamingo Park Racecourse is now South Dodgy Itie (Latino Magic) winning at Flamingo Park Africa’s only dirt track since the Vaal Sand Track was closed a few years ago.
