There will be plenty of opportunities for jamming, talking, meeting new friends, catching up with old friends. So join us for a special weekend. - 6 - Lorraine Hammond was raised in the mountains of Northwestern Connecticut with traditional music. With a degree in Music and Education , she is admired as a folk singer and songwriter, an accomplished player and teacher of the Celtic harp and the 5-string banjo, and an outstand- ing player of the Appalachian dulcimer. Lorraine is a regularly featured teacher and performer at venues around the country. Bennett Hammond began to play traditional and original music on the guitar in high school in Vermont, and began teaching it while in college in New Hampshire. “Hammond has a deft melodic sense, and a knack for transmuting traditional Irish and Appalachian motifs into thor- oughly contemporary results with taste and artistry.” Boston Globe Dan Berggren and Peggy Lynn capture the spirit of the Adirondack mountains in their songs. Their voices blend seamlessly to lend energy and emotion to their performances. Each has made several recordings of original songs, but they also enjoy collecting and presenting their own arrangements of traditional songs. Berggren accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, and harmonica, and Lynn with guitar and concertina. Evy Mayer sings and plays ukulele, guitar, dumbek and a host of other percussion instruments. She collects popular songs of the early 1900s, as well as humorous songs, children's music, plus Balkan and other international music. Lynn Noel has a compelling voice of striking clarity and power, as wide and deep as her reper- toire, especially for sea chanteys and flowing ballads of life and work at sea. Lynn’s award- winning living history series of “voyageurs, Vikings, pirates, and other traditional women's roles” has toured internationally. Lynn plays dulcimer, percussion, concertina, and string bass: but her favorite instrument is the audience. Dan Pearl is a renowned dance caller, equally at home with experienced and beginning dancers Send this form with a Stamped, Self-Addressed Envelope and check payable to FMSNY to: Don Wade, 35-41 72 St, Jackson Heights, NY 11372 Note: payment in full is required with registration. A memorial service to celebrate WOODY KOZIN’s life will be held on Sunday, Octo- ber 5, 2008 at 3 P.M. at the Central Unitarian Church, 156 Forest Ave., Paramus, New Jersey. Bring your instruments and voices. For directions, contact the office at cucparamus.org or 201-262-6300. To RSVP, please call Marilyn Kozin at 561-732- 5950. The RSVP is necessary because refreshments will be served; so Marilyn needs to know approximately how many people will be coming. SHEILA EWALL missed the Spring Weekend and other events because she had sur- gery and will be undergoing follow-up treatments. Despite her health issues, she re- mains connected to her young relatives. Sheila recently traveled to Maryland for a cousin’s bar mitzvah and is proud that her niece, Marni, passed the bar exam. On a sad note, BOB NORMAN died on May 4th after a long illness. He had prostate cancer. His wife, Clara Haigner, said that he passed away peacefully. The club ex- tends sincere condolences to Clara and to the rest of their family. If you have news to share, please contact me at 372 Central Park West, #15B, New York, NY 10025; 212-663-6309. MAKE MUSIC NY Saturday, June 21, 2008 was the second annual Make Music NY festival day. This citywide event was full of people making music in all the nooks and crannies of New York City. The event started in Paris and has been happening all over the world. It always occurs on June 21st, regardless of the day of the week. All events had to be outside and free and, I must say, the weather cooperated beautifully This year was the first time that the Folk Music Society of NY participated. We had two sites, one at 96th and Broadway at the West Side Arts Coalition and the other at the Second Presbyterian Church at 96th Street and Central Park West. We had a great time and listened to wonderful music. On Broadway, we heard Anne Price; Triboro—Evy Mayer, Don Friedman and Phyllis Elkind; and Bob Malenky. John Ziv was our excel- lent MC and Don Wade provided sound. At CPW, we heard Alan Friend; A.J. Bender, Dave Comins, Sarah Galloway and Bill Giles; Jen Larson and Tony Delello; and Toby Fagenson. Toby did triple duty because he was also our MC and led the Sing around after the performances. He did a great job. People came and listened. I had thought that most would stop for a short time and move on, but they stopped, and stayed. Of course we handed out lots of literature. Any time anybody wants to hand out litera- ture, just let us know and we’ll be sure that you get some. Word of mouth and person to person is often the best way that people learn about us. NYC is busy and noisy and hot. Everyone, however, had a great time. Thank you to our MC’s, our performers, the West Side Arts Coalition and the Second Presbyterian Church. Thank you also to Arthur Sherry who told us about the event and ran a suc- cessful event at the Ring Garden at Dyckman and 200th Street. He focused on Inwood musicians for the most part, but had a number of our members there as well. Thank you to Rosalie Friend and the members of the program committee who helped in the planning of this event. Most of all, thank you to the organizers of Make Music NY. They did a great job in organizing the whole city for a day of music! Eileen Pentel - 9 - Summer has come and with it lots of festivals (thanks again to John Mazza for his listings), the sea music concerts, and parties, parties, parties. There is the Old Time Jam/Party in Park slope, the Chantey sings, and the Folk Open Sing. The sing and swim party at the Cohen’s will have us singing swimmingly and cool (sorry about that—but I couldn’t resist). We will also have our annual Picnic and Sing at the Ritchie- Pickow home. Many of us will be at Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp and I hope to see you there. There are still spaces left (www.cdss.org,). Our fall weekend has lots of spaces, since we are just sending out the final information on it! This weekend will again be at a resort and spa and we have a special price for children. There will be special family programs as well. We have great staff that will provide you with learning opportuni- ties, listening enjoyment and singing and playing participation. In addition, those of us who come to the weekends know that the participants also bring those singing and listening opportunities—great sing arounds and jams all over the place! It seems far away now—but what better way to have something to look forward to when the cold weather is around the corner! Thank you to the folks who mailed out the newsletter. They could always use more help. The following volunteers worked up at the last mailing: Isabel Goldstein, Eileen Pentel, Anne Price, Brenda Pena, and Don Wade. Won’t you join us and help mail out the next newsletter on August 28? (See page 3) Woody Kozin We mourn the loss of long-time club member Sherwood Kozin, and our sympathy goes to his wife, Marilyn.. Woody, as he was commonly known, was a warm and friendly guy and an enthusiastic participant in our weekends and social events, occa- sionally hosting singing parties for us. He was at one time a member of our execu- tive board. Several of his friends have donated money to the society in his memory.
Bruce Phillips, 1935-2008 Bruce "U.Utah" Phillips died on May 23. An obituary was printed in the New York Times and extensive information is available online at www.utahphillips.org. Printed below is the brief, but eloquent, note that Andy Cohen sent out to the Folk Alliance mailing list. Dear All, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I got the news from our mutual friend Haywire Brack, that Bruce 'U. Utah' Phillips passed away last night in his sleep, ending a roughly ten year bout with congestive heart failure. ... For those who few who might not know, Bruce was a consummate songwriter, community organizer, anarchist role model, historian, archivist and scholar, and one time presidential candidate on the Utah Freedom and Peace party ticket. His travels, adventures and reputation are going to be talked about on these lists by the many people who knew him, worked with him and were inspired by him over the last forty years or so. I will not belabor any of that here. Let's just say, we've lost one of our own. And like Preacher Casey said, his work is done. Now it's up to us.
