H.M.S. Pinafore

Rehearsals for our spring 2016 show, Gilbert & Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore,” have begun. Performances will be held April 22, 23, 29 & 30, 2016 at 8 pm and April 24 & 30 at 2 pm. Stage direction is by Sam Griffin, with music direction by Helene Furlong.

Captain Corcoran has prospered as captain of the “H.M.S. Pinafore” and hopes to further improve the family's societal standing by making a marriage match for his daughter Josephine with Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Josephine is conflicted, because she's fallen in love with a "common" sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, while Sir Joseph's attentions "nauseate" her. She finally sets her mind to elope with Ralph, after hearing Sir Joseph lecture the captain and crew that "a British sailor is any man's equal" (excepting his). Everything is sorted out in typical topsy-turvy G&S fashion, with the captain, Josephine, and Sir Joseph ending up with appropriate marriage partners. Issues of social class are the target of Gilbert's wit in this production, accompanied by some of Sullivan's most memorable music.

SEE YOU THERE CONCERT GILD

Robert Glasper Trio is nominated for another Grammy this year, having won a few years back. Robert Glasper Trio is here at Arden Gild Hall as our first show as part of the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Touring Network. His recent show in Philly at World Cafe Live was sold out at over 500 people!

Following the breakthrough commercial and critical success of his two Grammy-winning R&B-oriented albums, Robert Glasper returns to his acoustic jazz roots with Covered (The Robert Glasper Trio recorded live at Capitol Studios). The album reunites Glasper with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, re-forming the trio that created his first two Blue Notes releases, Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007).

Tickets are $30 for the general public and $25 for Arden Club members.

Tickets for members are obtained by e-mail at [email protected]; non-members go to ardenconcerts.com or Between Books (Claymont) and Jupiter Records (Arden).

Robyn Hitchcock – Waiting List The Robyn Hitchcock March 18 concert is sold out, but we have been getting regular cancellations for this postponed by snow show. Contact us for a waiting list! [email protected]

Songhoy Blues Friday April 15, 2016 - 8 PM with ill Fated Natives - $15 (members $12)

Songhoy Blues is an amalgam of Desert Blues from the north of Mali (where fundamentalism has displaced nearly all musicians to the south for safety) and blues rock of the 70s. I think there is more than a little Black Keys in the sound, but their album was one of the best of 2015. It's very exciting to have them come to Arden in this WXPN Welcomes event sponsored in part by Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. The ill Fated Natives are an exciting young rock band from Philly making their Delaware debut in Arden.

Alejandro Escovedo Saturday May 28, 2016 - 8 PM - $25 (members $20)

It is hard to believe that Alejandro's amazing concert in Arden was 9 years ago! We are very excited to welcome him back. We expect this seated concert to sell out, so contact us now or buy as soon as you can! Alejandro will appear in an acoustic / electric duo performance, his second musician will be on electric guitar and keyboards. Join us for this season closer on Memorial Day weekend!

4 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR MAR 2016 SHAKESPEARE GILD

The Arden Shakespeare Gild’s summer 2016 production, Troilus and Cressida, directed by Jim Ewald, will be presented in the Frank Stephens Memorial Theater on June 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, and 25.

The backdrop of Troilus and Cressida takes place during the Trojan War but our version will be Star Wars-themed with the lighter side of Troy versus the darker side of the Greeks!

For the better part of a decade the Greeks have been fighting the Trojans. For the princes of Troy, love and war will intertwine and change their lives forever.

Paris and his lover Helen, for whom the war is being fought, care only about being with each other. Hector, Trojan General and Paris’ older brother dreams of distinguishing himself on the battlefield for the glory of Troy, while Troilus, the youngest brother, dreams only of the beautiful Cressida. With the help of Cressida’s uncle Pandarus, Troilus and Cressida fall madly in love; however their love is short lived. Cressida’s mother has defected to the Greeks and requests her daughter to be brought to her in exchange for a Trojan General. The two lovers swear undying love for each other and Troilus promises to visit Cressida in the Greek camp, despite the dangers of entering enemy territory. It is equally dangerous, however, for a woman alone and unprotected in an enemy’s camp, and the path Cressida must chose threatens to tear their love apart.

Will Hector’s ambitious love of glory, Paris’ selfish love of Helen, and Troilus’ anguished love of Cressida be, as Helen herself unconsciously prophesizes, a love that will “undo us all"?

Rehearsals will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, beginning on April 4. To volunteer in any capacity “behind the scenes” please contact Laura Wallace or Mary Catherine Kelley.

Meetings Gild meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Bratten Room of the Gild Hall. All are welcome hither!

First Ladies: From Ceremony to Substance

Please join the Scholars Gild at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, March 15, when we will discuss the role of the First Ladies of the United States of America. Professor Katherine Sibley’s talk will explore first ladies of the twentieth and twenty-first century, highlighting their stories through the life of an underrated first lady, Florence Kling Harding, whose term in office (1921-1923) underlines many of the important transitions in the office that have occurred over the last 100 years and which are exemplified by the current first lady, Michelle Obama. These have included growing activism, significant political influence and counsel to the president, and cultivation of popular and celebrity culture to communicate their message and desired image to the American people. Katherine A. S. Sibley is professor and director of American Studies at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where she has taught history since receiving her Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1991. Her newest book, A Companion to First Ladies (Wiley-Blackwell), should appear this May. She appeared on C-SPAN’s First Ladies series to discuss Florence Harding in 2013. Her most recent publication was A Companion to Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover (Wiley-Blackwell 2014). Last year, she also contributed a chapter on World War II and the postwar era to the Globalyceum curriculum website (www.globalyceum.com). She has published four monographs: First Lady Florence Kling Harding: Behind the Tragedy and Controversy (2009), Red Spies in America: Stolen Secrets and the Dawn of the Cold War (2004); The Cold War (1998) and Loans and Legitimacy: The Evolution of Soviet-American Relations, 1919-1933 (1996). She edits a book series, the U.S. in International Perspective, with Paradigm Publishers, and serves on the editorial board of American Communist History, as well as on the Historical Advisory Committee to the Office of the Historian at the U.S. State Department.

The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) in the Lower Gild Hall. If you would like to receive e-mail notifications and reminders, contact the Scholars Gild via [email protected]. Title your e-mail “Scholars Gild Request” and include your name, comments, and request in the body of the e-mail.
