NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (#12-028) By: Suzanne Pardington (503-725-8794, [email protected]) University Communications Source: Ronald Tammen (503-725-8443, [email protected]) Professor of Political Science, Director of the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government Former Gov. Ted Kulongoski to join PSU's Mark O. Hatfield School of Government (Portland, Ore.) March 27, 2012 — Former Gov. Ted Kulongoski will join the faculty of Portland State University this spring as a Distinguished Fellow of Policy and Politics at the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. Kulongoski, who served two terms as Oregon's governor, will continue his 40-year career in public service by teaching political science courses and assisting PSU's Center for Public Service and international programs in Asia. His classes will focus on the interplay of policy, politics and government. "I am pleased to welcome Gov. Kulongoski to Portland State," said Wim Wiewel, PSU president. "He will continue in the tradition of the late Sen. Hatfield by helping to educate a new generation of citizens and leaders for Oregon. Maybe someday a future governor will be sitting in one of his classes." “It is an honor to teach at Portland State University,” Kulongoski said. “The urban campus of PSU is a vital piece of our higher education system, with the most diverse student body. It is a wonderful opportunity to share what I have learned, after 40 years of public service, about politics, policy and governance in Oregon." This spring, Kulongoski will co-teach a course, lecture as a guest in other classes and develop his own course for fall term. He shares Hatfield's bipartisan approach to politics and hopes to pass on those values to his students. Kulongoski will be the second Oregon governor to be affiliated with the Hatfield School after leaving office. For many years Gov. Barbara Roberts served in PSU’s Executive Leadership Institute, now known as the Center for Public Service, headed by former Secretary of State Phil Keisling. "This is a boon for Oregon students who want to learn the real story about politics, not the one they see on TV every night," said Ronald Tammen, director of the Hatfield School of Government. "Gov. Kulongoski will draw on his experience as governor, state legislator, state attorney general and state supreme court justice to give students an invaluable classroom experience." Kulongoski was raised in a Catholic boys' home, served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Southeast Asia and worked as a bricklayer and truck driver before the GI Bill gave him the chance go to college, earning a bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Missouri. Since he began his political career in 1974, he has served as a state representative, senator, insurance commissioner, attorney general and associate justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. He was elected to two terms as Oregon governor from 2003-2010. He lives in Portland with his wife, Mary Oberst.
