Festival Theatre Edinburgh Scotland June 18, 2017 Russell Leadbetter, heraldscotland.com: Switching between piano and acoustic and electric guitars, he discussed some of his songs in detail. I’m Alive, a “California song”, was actually begun in Toyko; That Girl Could Sing was written for an “amazing singer”, Valerie Carter, who with Lowell George co-wrote his song Love Needs A Heart. He debuted Randy Newman’s A Piece of the Pie, which, though it “takes the p*** out of me”, and was every bit as dissonant as Browne had promised, did at least reference the disparity between rich and poor in America, a point about which Browne feels very strongly. The striking Walls and Doors, from his most recent album, was written by the Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela, who has had censorship battles with his own government. And as Browne introduced Which Side?, which rounds on bankers and fracking companies, he saluted Scotland’s Yes voters in 2014. Festival Theatre Songs and moments such as these reminded you of Browne’s lifelong liberalism and humanitarian activism, but his engagement with the audience - making them laugh, Edinburgh making them think, bantering with them as they bellowed requests for songs - was a joy to behold, too. Closing with an upbeat The Pretender, he encored with a quick Scotland namecheck for the late Glenn Frey before launching into Take It Easy. Finally, and only then, did he call it a night. To some extent, it was true. James did find inspiration for much of his life’s work in his emotional torment and the many years he spent fighting drug addiction and depression. And he did hail from an affluent, musically talented family that could afford to send its progeny to exclusive prep schools and expensive private mental hospitals. But now James Taylor in his fifties has the benefit of hindsight to moderate any lingering grudges against a press that persistently pigeonholed him – first as a sort of Kurt Cobain of his day, and much later as a sleepy crooner with his most creative years behind him.

  • SURF MUSIC by Geoffrey Himes
SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.
