Highlighting the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much needed support. The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is. This Carers Week, we want to help carers get connected. Caring without the right information and support can be tough. In Wolverhampton we have around 27,500 carers, and to help get carers connected we have organised some social events. What is a carer? A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, or who needs extra help as they grow older. These people are called carers but they would probably say that they are just being a husband, a wife, a mum, a dad, a son, a daughter, a friend or a good neighbour. How can caring affect you? - The amount and type of support that carers provide varies considerably. Carers may help with personal care but also things like shopping, laundry, cleaning, cooking, filling in forms or managing money. Without the right support caring can have a significant impact. Evidence shows that caring can cause ill health, poverty and social isolation. This is why the focus for Carers Week 2019 is getting carers connected in their communities to the right support and information. Connected to advice and information - There are many places that can offer information useful information and advice, Voluntary sector organisations, Local authority, Citizens advice, Welfare Rights and in Wolverhampton you can come to the Carer Support Team. Connected to services - Getting a carer's assessment which looks at what support you might need as a carer is a great start. From arranging a break from caring, getting the right equipment to care safely or getting support with improving your own well-being, services can connect services to a range of support. 6 City Carer 43 (apr19).qxp_Layout 1 29/04/2019 12:32 Page 8 Connected to friends and family - Lack of time, and understanding from others, can cause loneliness and isolation amongst carers. The difficulty of taking time away from our caring role also adds to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Greater understanding from friends, colleagues, and the public, as well as more opportunities for breaks and social activities are all needed to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Connected to technology - There's a whole world of technology that could help make your home safer and your life as a carer easier. Simple devices can help someone live independently for longer and give you peace of mind when you can't be around.
