Hanukkah is coming! The annual Sisterhood Pick-a-Dreidel Hanukkah project for disadvantaged and ill children is in full swing. It's easy to participate: pick a dreidel from the colorful board display by the synagogue office, follow the posted instructions and drop off your wrapped gift or gift card (suggested donation: $25) at the office. The gifts will be distributed in time for Hanukkah. The deadline has been extended to Friday, December 5. If you can't get to the temple in person, or if you have any questions, please contact Yvonne Cort at [email protected].

Please join us in a tribute to our mother, Florence Meyer, at the closing session of the Herbert Tarr Institute for Adult Jewish Learning on Monday, December 1, at 7:30 PM, Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn. HAVA NAGILA (The Movie), an uplifting documentary on the song we all know, will be shown and a special program led by Rabbi Alan Lucas and Cantor Ofer Barnoy. -Sharon Schwartz, Jeffrey Meyer, Lynn Spevack, Amy Kane and families.

This year's Ladies Night Out takes place this Thursday, December 4, at 7:30 PM. There will be great vendors, holiday shopping, wine and cheese, music and fantastic raffles. The next meeting of the SHJC Sisterhood Book Club takes place this Thursday, December 4. We will be discussing "The Invisible City" by Julia Dahl. On Thursday, January 8, we will discuss "City of Women" by David Gillham and on Wednesday, February 11, "Where'd you go, Bernadette?" by Maria Semple. All are welcome. We invite you to participate in a community read of 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio that will culminate in learning about kindness. Join us on Sunday, December 7. This program is for everyone - young/older adults, seniors, teenagers, and children in fourth grade and higher. If you wish to bring younger children, they are, of course, welcome too. Come and celebrate Shabbat at SHJC! We invite you and your family for Shabbat services and dinner Friday, December 12. Join Rabbi Jacknis, Hazzan Shamash and our principal, Ellen Marcus, for a traditional Shabbat meal with your SHJC family at 6:45 PM. Our Congregational and Religious School Friday Night Service will be immediately after dinner at 8:00 PM. Our SHJC Religious School students have been practicing and will be leading different parts of the service. Dinner will be served in the Simha Room. Adults: $15/Children $10. On Sunday, December 14 at 4:00 PM, Hazzan Brian Shamash will present a Hanukkah concert entitled “Love Brings Peace”. In addition, there will be guest artists and the SHJC choir. You won’t want to miss this joyous musical afternoon. Come with your children, your parents and your friends. With the holiday season right around the corner, consider buying gift cards from Sisterhood, either for gifts or for your own personal shopping use. Sisterhood sells gift cards to ShopRite, Fairway, Best Market, Waldbaums / . They make great gifts to give to a co-worker or friend or someone who could just use help with daily living expenses. You use the gift card exactly like you would any other gift card you have from a store. The cards are sold to you at face value and the money stays on the card until you use it up. Due to popular demand, we are now offering our “KidStuff” books for sale to the SHJC Congregation. “KidStuff” books contain valuable coupons (think Entertainment Books) with discounts on items for kids and adults, such as clothing, entertainment, food, craft and book stores. There are valuable coupons for Waldbaums, Fairway, Rite Aid, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Disney Store, Lester’s, Denny’s, Dave & Busters and so many more. Most coupons are valid until December 31, 2015! Copies are in the Early Childhood office for you to look over. The cost of each book is $25, with 50% profit going to our Synagogue.
