ABSTRACT The influence of age, ability, monitoring, and metamemory on event-based prospective memory was examined using an adapted version of G. O. Einstein and M. A. McDaniel’s (1990) task. Two samples of younger and older adults who differed in educational attainment and verbal ability were compared. Contrary to previous research (Cherry & LeCompte, 1999), the age/ability groups did not differ on prospective memory performance. On-line monitoring ratings were not related to prospective memory but posttest monitoring ratings were. Age differences in reports of task-irrelevant thoughts emerged from the on-line monitoring data. Although age and ability group differences on self-reports of memory functioning and memory knowledge were evident, neither memory functioning nor memory knowledge were strongly related to prospective memory performance. Recognition memory performance was the strongest predictor of successful prospective memory, followed by working memory. In contrast, age, ability, working memory, and recognition were all predictors of retrospective memory, with age, ability, and working memory making stronger contributions to retrospective than to prospective memory. INTRODUCTION Prospective memory refers to memory for actions to be performed in the future, such as remembering to go to class at a certain time or remembering to stop by the store on the way home from work. Mills College, USA Christie Chung, Ph.D. Mills College, USA Abstract A positivity effect where older adults remember positive information better than young adults has been documented widely in the memory literature. However, research on the generalizability of the positivity effect to non-western cultures is still in its infancy. The present study is the first in the field of memory to explore the differences in emotional memory patterns between the US and Afghan cultures. Due to the war in Afghanistan, we hypothesized that the Afghan older adults’ negative life experiences may reduce the effect of the positivity effect usually found in the US. In the present study, we tested young and older US and Afghan adults on an emotional picture memory task consisted of 30 pictures (10 positive, 10 negative, 10 neutral). They were later asked to recall these pictures using brief verbal descriptions. US older adults remembered significantly fewer negative pictures compared to US young adults, demonstrating a positivity effect in old age. Afghan adults, however, did not show an age-related positivity effect in memory as predicted. We discussed our results with the framework of current socio-emotional theories. Methods: The research was a causality-comparative study. Using convenience sampling method, 53 male patients and 53 healthy male individuals were selected. The participants were asked to fill out prospective and retrospective memory questionnaire and pain numeric rating scale (NRS). In addition, a continuous performance test was performed. The study hypotheses were tested using two independent group T-test and the Pearson correlation analysis by SPSS 22 with the significant level of 0.05. Spatial information is thought to play an early and important role in EAM, contributing to the dynamics of retrieval. Using a combination of behavioural, neuroimaging, and neurostimulation approaches, this dissertation aimed to examine the temporal dynamics of EAM and the role spatial information plays in its retrieval. Chapter 2 demonstrated a temporal precedence for spatial information at the behavioural level, but importantly found high individual variability in early recall of spatial information. Further, individual differences in spatial aspects of EAM were reflected in hippocampal and precuneus grey matter volumes. Chapter 3 examined the temporal dynamics of EAM at the neural level using magnetoencephalography (MEG). While cueing individuals with familiar locations altered the dynamics of retrieval, it did not confer an early neural advantage. Together with the findings from Chapter 2, these results indicate that early spatial information alters the dynamics of EAM retrieval, but does not play a ubiquitous or automatic role in EAM. This study also found that spatial perspective during EAM retrieval was associated with a well-established neural component of episodic memory recollection. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) administered to the precuneus disrupted this association, demonstrating that this region is crucially involved in neural processing of spatial perspective during EAM.

This review examines the variables that have been found to influence PM performance in this population. In addition, current methods of assessment are reviewed with a focus on clinical measures. Finally, cognitive rehabilitation therapies (CRT) are reviewed, including compensatory, restorative and metacognitive approaches. Method: Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (Liberati, 2009) were used to identify studies. Studies were added that were identified from the reference lists of these. Results: Research has begun to elucidate the contributing variables to PM deficits after BI, such as attention, executive function and retrospective memory components. Imaging studies have identified prefrontal deficits, especially in the region of BA10 as contributing to these deficits.

Memory dysfunction is also obligatory in age-associated neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. However, despite the ubiquitousness of age-related memory decline, several basic questions regarding this entity remain unanswered. The present investigation addressed two such questions: (1) Can individuals suffering from memory dysfunction due to aging and amnesia due to Alzheimer’s disease improve memory performance if contextual support is provided at the time of acquisition of to-be- remembered material or reproduction of to-be-remembered material? (2) Are memory deficits observed in ‘younger’ older adults similar to the deficits observed in ‘older’ elderly subjects, Alzheimer’s disease, and memory dysfunction in younger subjects? The outcome of this investigation suggests an affirmative answer to the first question. Given appropriate support at encoding and retrieval, even densely amnesic patients can improve their memory performance. As to the second question, a more complex pattern emerges.

Yearsley1 & Jean Saint-Aubin2 & Claudette Fortin3 & Geneviève Gallant2 & Dominic Guitard2 # The Author(s) 2018 Abstract Echoing many of the themes of the seminal work of Atkinson and Shiffrin (The Psychology of Learning and Motivation, 2; 89–195, 1968), this paper uses the feature model (Nairne, Memory & Cognition, 16, 343–352, 1988;Nairne,Memory & Cognition, 18; 251– 269, 1990; Neath & Nairne, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 2;429–441, 1995) to account for performance in working-memory tasks. The Brooks verbal and visuo-spatial matrix tasks were performed alone, with articulatory suppression, or with a spatial suppression task; the results produced the expected dissociation. We used approximate Bayesian computation techniques to fit the feature model to the data and showed that the similarity-based interference process implemented in the model accounted for the data patterns well. We then fit the model to data from Guérard and Tremblay (2008, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 34,556–569); the latter study produced a double dissociation while calling upon more typical order reconstruction tasks. Again, the model performed well. The findings show that a double dissociation can be modelled without appealing to separate systems for verbal and visuo-spatial processing. The latter findings are significant as the feature model had not been used to model this type of dissociation before; importantly, this is also the first time the model is quantitatively fit to data. For the demonstration provided here, modularity was unnecessary if two assumptions were made: (1) the main difference between spatial and verbal working-memory tasks is the features that are encoded; (2) secondary tasks selectively interfere with primary tasks to the extent that both tasks involve similar features.
