PAGE 2 2017 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM Welcome to FARM 2017

Hello and welcome to City and Folk Alliance Region Midwest’s 2017 Conference. This year represents our third and fi nal fantastic and fun fi lled year in Iowa City. We hope you fi nd your time productive, fulfi lling, amazing, and educational. We look forward to you joining us in Grand Rapids, Michigan next year.

We’re very excited to have Peter Mulvey as our keynote speaker this year. Peter excels at a variety of styles, from Tin Pan Alley Jazz thru poetry to Folk and Americana. His life and career have taken him from theatre studies in Milwaukee, to Dublin, Ireland, to a stint as a full time performer in the Boston subways. Peter has since relocated back to his Mid-West roots, touring at times by bicycle and complementing his music career with voice work. Don’t miss his master class at 2:00 pm, and community sing at 3:15 – both Thursday. And his keynote address Friday at 7pm.

This year FARM attendees are again giving back to the Iowa City community with Songs for Seniors. Learn how touring musicians can think outside the box for performance opportunities, and about the therapeutic value of music. A presentation on this method of adding to your music career is Thursday 1pm in the Lucas Room. Or ask David G. Smith about this subject at any time.

Don’t forget to invite YOUR fans to our Public Performances. Each night’s showcases are open to the public at a very reasonable cost. Details on our website at www.farmfolk.org/farm-2017/taste-of-farm

Wanna have some fun? Busking is allowed outside the hotel on the pedestrian mall, which is a bustling place, full of shops and restaurants – check it out.

We also have three events outside our conference hotel – Thursday night dinner at The Mill, Saturday night Showcase at Uptown Bill’s, and the free Sunday Concert at The Mill. Details are at www.farmfolk.org and on the Special Events page in this program

We are proud of our awardees this year. Iowa City’s own Dave Moore has been honored with the Folk Tradition Lifetime Achievement award. Dave is a Red House Records artist, has been heard frequently on , and is a Conjunto music expert, having received a National Endowment for the Arts Grant to support his studies in that area. Andy Cohen is a living library of acoustic . His fi fty year career has been WHERE TO FIND THINGS IN THE PROGRAM focused on a single preservationist theme. Thru his life of Conference Information Page 8-9 advocacy, Andy and the older music he champions serve Conference Schedule Page 10-11 as touchstones for younger artists. He is well deserving Key Note Speaker Page 13 of our Lantern Bearer award. Join us Thursday at 7 as we Awardees Page 15, 17 honor and celebrate Dave and Andy. PAGE 6 2017 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM MESSAGE FROM FARM BOARD PRESIDENT, BOB HOFBAUER

Where has the time gone? Seems like only a year ago Annie Capps & I were scouting for a conference location in St. Louis. And now we are ending our 3 years in Iowa City. Under the very capable leadership of co-directors Smitty Smith and Nancy Emrich we have had a good run in Iowa City. The keynotes, the workshops and the showcases have all been excellent. The number of Iowa based musicians attending FARM has increased dramatically. And Smitty & Nancy leave us with a very strong and capable group of volunteer conference coordinators who reduce the director’s workload. A big thanks to both for a job well done.

The FARM board of director’s election ballots were emailed to current FAI members in the FARM territory on Sept 22. You will need to attend Sunday’s membership meeting to learn of the election results. It is good to see that we actually have a contested election. There are 9 candidates for 6 board positions. Three of those candidates were nominated by the membership. I’m glad to see the membership taking an active interest in the FARM leadership. Thank you for your interest, and I sincerely hope you took time to vote.

So, where is FARM going next year? Michigan!!! It has been far too long but we are fi nally heading back. We sent out 24 RFQs to hotels across the state. Half turned us down (about normal), and we eliminated 8 more. We did site visits at 3 hotels – all would have been excellent for the FARM conference. In the end we chose the airport Crowne Plaza in Grand Rapids. Easy to get to, surrounded by restaurants and other resources, strong support from the music community and they really want us. You will appreciate the facilities including the large front lobby, which will be great for jamming.

Even better, Annie Capps has agreed to be our conference director for 2018. Annie was our conference director for the four years in Bolingbrook and our fi rst year in St Louis. So with a good location, great facilities and an experienced conference director we look forward to a great conference in 2018.

You are about to experience 4 days of music and fun. If you are new to FARM – or not -take time to meet everyone. We’re not so big that that’s not possible. Mingle, make friends and have fun. Remember, there will be plenty of time to sleep next week.

This is my fi nal conference as FARM Board President. I have chosen to not run for re-election and will leave the board following Sunday’s board meeting. It has been fun and I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve made while I was on the FARM board: the development of the one day conference (FARMette) which I directed in 2012 and 2014; the online offi cial showcase submission system; the move to use videos instead of CDs for the offi cial showcase; taking part in the selection of St Louis, Iowa City and now Grand Rapids as the sites for the FARM conference; having the honor of directing two FARM conference; and watching many musicians develop and grow in skill over the years I’ve been involved. I am looking forward to attending future FARM conferences as just an attendee!

Bob Hofbauer President, FARM Board of Directors

www.farmfolk.org PAGE 7 Conference Information

Welcome to Iowa City!! This is our third and fi nal year in this wonderful community. All conference activities are in the lower level conference area, except meals, which are next door at the Hotel Vetro, the Thursday dinner and Sunday concert (The Mill) and the Saturday Open Mic (Uptown Bill’s). Pocket size conference schedules are available at the registration desk. There is a great pedestrian mall right outside the back door of the hotel – get out and enjoy Iowa City!

NAME BADGES are required for entrance to any of the conference events and can be obtained by registering. If someone would like to attend only the evening showcases, we offer Taste of FARM for only $20 per night.

REGISTRATION on site and check in opens at noon on Thursday outside the conference rooms on the lower level. There will always be a volunteer available at or near the registration desk to answer questions.

DISPLAY TABLES are provided without charge, in the conference area. Feel free to set out your press kits, cards, fl yers, stickers or whatever merchandise you’d like to share. Please be economical with the space and leave some for the rest of the attendees.

DINING for those who purchased the conference meals (Fri/Sat brunch and Fri dinner), meals are served just next door, upstairs at the Hotel Vetro. The opportunity to sit and socialize is well worth the cost of the meals, plus the food will be very good.

PERFORMANCE LANE is open to all conference attendees and selection is based on the order of registration. The schedule is 10 minutes unplugged with no break between performers. We ask that performers limit themselves to just 2 songs and that you arrive on stage ready to perform.

PRIVATE SHOWCASES are poolside on the 2nd fl oor, 11pm to 2am each night. Champ Smith, chief of terrier security, will be in attendance. He’s tough, but can be bought with tummy rubs or popcorn (or most anything edible).

MENTOR SESSIONS are from 3 to 4 on Saturday afternoon. Mentors are experienced individuals who are volunteering to meet with you and share their experience. Sign-up sheets will be on a table near the registration desk.

JAMMING, SONG CIRCLES, and BUSKING are encouraged throughout the conference. The common areas in the lobby (until 10pm) and conference levels, conference rooms when not in use, are all available for you to jam until the cows, or Hawker the Hawkeye, come home. Also – we have arranged with Iowa City to allow busking (public performing – you may accept tips or not as you choose) at ANY time on the pedestrian mall just outside the hotel.

SHOWCASE VIDEOS are being recorded and are available to purchase for $20 per performance at the registration desk. A complete set of showcase videos is available for $50.

COFFEE will be available (free!!) in the pre-conference area on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. And there are several great coffee shops very close by.

INSTRUMENT STORAGE is available in Johnson room #3. Check at the registration desk for more information.

ARE YOU SOCIAL? As in media? When you tweet, post, and do those things you do, please use #farmfolk. We are on Facebook, Twitter (@farmfolk), YouTube, and Instagram (@farmfolkfai) Or just add the social media thing to the Performance Lane page, or wherever there’s room.

PAGE 12 2017 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM 2017 Key Note Speaker peter mulvey

Over the past 20 years, Mulvey has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a headliner – his attitude is, “When you love what you do, you can work all the time,” – he has shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani diFranco, Indigo Girls, and Greg Brown, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam.

Peter Mulvey began as a self-described “city kid” from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played, wrote, and sang in bands while studying theatre there, and then traveled to Dublin, Ireland, in 1989, where he learned the trade of the street singer. Returning to the States, he relocated to Boston where he took to playing in the subways as a full-time occupation. The seven hour sessions playing to passers-by and commuters not only strengthened his accomplished guitar playing but also sharpened his innate gifts as a communicator.

As a complement to his touring and recording, Peter has also kept a hand in education; teaching guitar and songwriting workshops across the country. His songs and deep baritone voice have been heard in documentary fi lms, major television shows, and by dance and theater companies.

For the past several years Peter has done an annual fall tour entirely by bicycle, partly for environmental reasons and partly for the sheer fun of continuing his creative, unorthodox approach to a long and fruitful career as an artist.

In every aspect of his career, Mulvey draws on an extremely broad swath of infl uence; he is always reading, listening, and eager to hear new poetry, modern minimalist composers, old-time fi ddle tunes, Argentinean trip-hop, or top- shelf bar bands. Said The Irish Times: “Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer- songwriters to tour these shores. A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fi re, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style. A joy to see.”

PAGE 14 2017 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM Folk Tradition in the Midwest Lifetime Achievement Awardee Dave Moore

Dave Moore is one of the great songwriters to come out of the state of Iowa. Known for his elegant songwriting and instrumental prowess on blues guitar, button accordion and harmonica, he has become somewhat of a legend. Coming of age in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Dave enrolled in college only to drop out to follow a girlfriend down to Guadalajara, Mexico. Though the journey lasted only a few months, it was to be the fi rst of many travels in Latin America and totally altered his world view. Returning to the States for the holidays in 1971, his mother serendipitously left a harmonica in his Christmas stocking and he soon found that he could not quit playing it.

He began to experiment with guitar and headed back to Mexico with only a little plywood-topped Harmony 6-string, and a box of blues tapes. There he took occasional lessons from a Chiapas guitarist with a passion for American ragtime.

In 1980 Dave returned to Iowa City and teamed up with local songwriter Greg Brown who was just beginning to develop a national reputation. For the next few years Dave backed up Brown on recording projects, extensive tours and several appearances on Garrison Keillor’s popular A Prairie Home Companion on NPR, including time as the show’s band leader

Awestruck by an accordion album featuring Fred Zimmerle’s Trio San Antonio, he traveled to Texas where he sought out the great masters of Conjunto music: Zimmerle, Johnny Degallado, and Santiago Jimenez, Sr. All three men would give him lessons and encouragement on the 3-row button box. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant to further these studies.

In Iowa, Dave has been an artist in residence in the schools. He has appeared on recordings by Garrison Keillor, Greg Brown, and many others. His songs have been recorded by Lowen & Navarro, Larry Penn, Greg Brown, and others. www.farmfolk.org PAGE 15 PAGE 16 2017 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM Lantern Bearer Awardee andy cohen

One doesn’t condense seventy years into fi ve hundred words without losing something in the translation, but if you can imagine a life in which all efforts were subordinated to a single, preservationist theme, that’s Andy Cohen’s life.

Andy landed on his feet a number of times. In college at Champaign, there was Archie Green (founder of the Folklife Center in Washington); in Chicago, Jim Brewer and Honeyboy Edwards were examples. Andy moved to Detroit, then Ann Arbor, then Saratoga, then Cullowhee, NC, (where he started a folk festival) and then Asheville (where he started a coffeehouse). Then on to Kent, Ohio (Andy was on the KSU Folk Festival committee for twenty years and ran the festival several times) and fi nally to Memphis, where he is immersed in life, citizenly service and Blues Studies. Andy has been glad to see some of the work he and others have done begin to pay off in the re-seeding of old Black music in younger Black minds and artistic expressions.

Andy has ten years of grad school, thirty years of Archaeology, fi fty years of playing old music and seventy years of listening to it in back of his advocacy position. As older ways of doing, making and thinking get replaced by shallow plastic pat answers designed for particular market niches, the older music that he and others preserve and promote serves as a touchstone.

Andy says “The Folk Revival itself began with what Robert Redfi eld described as a Cultural Revitalization Movement, and to this day remains a separate and energizing force from the Music Business. Simply by virtue of its *anthropological* use of the word ‘Folk’, Folk Alliance has a legitimate entree into every traditional and non-traditional hamlet in the world. Think of what that means’”

It means, if you have the guts to go, the will to learn, and a heart for cultural equity, you can eventually do some good in this world, but only if you’re patient.

The collaboration of husband and wife, their connection, and their infl uences (such as Gillian Welch, and Guy Clark) all meet on stage. You see it, hear it, and then you fi nd yourself truly feeling it. After calling Texas home, they shed most of their possessions to become nomads in 2014. Living on the road full-time with their dogs, they are exploring the country, while creating and sharing their music.

He has toured extensively in Canada and is about to release a new twelve-song record
