'At the Core of This Quintet's Repertoire Are the Standards on Which Every Jazz Artist …Eventually Must Prove His Mettle' Undoubtedly one of the leading forces in the world of vocal music today, The Real Group is famed for its superlative creativity, delighting audiences with jazz originals and reworkings of popular favourites. The group’s performances display an unbeatable combination of its trademark sound, ‘At the core of this quintet's insatiable humour and audience engagement. Hailing from Sweden, The repertoire are the standards Real Group has created a unique musical expression in a field between on which every jazz artist jazz, pop and Nordic European choral music. …eventually must prove his mettle’ Formed at Stockholm’s Royal Academy of Music, from which the original group graduated in 1989, The Real Group has enjoyed an international CHICAGO TRIBUNE touring career for 30 years, with highlights including performances at prestigious events such as the Queen of Sweden’s birthday (when it ‘I wish I was in this group’ performed the Abba classic ‘Dancing Queen’ together with the former Abba JON HENDRICKS member Anni-Frid Lyngstad) and the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Its versatility and creativity makes it possible for the group to collaborate with symphony orchestras, jazz groups, big bands and pop bands alike – not to mention artists such as Barbara Hendricks, Toots Thielemans and Sir George Martin. The Real Group hosts its own festival in Stockholm, welcoming visitors from more than 20 countries. In 2015, the group presents the LEVELELEVEN festival with Finnish a cappella group Rajaton. Education and outreach remains at the core of the group’s work, and regular workshops and courses are offered through The Real Group Academy. The singers are proud to be Ambassadors for the charity Star For Life in Sweden and South Africa. With an impressive and popular discography, The Real Group has released a wealth of celebrated discs, including their most recent offerings: ‘Live in Japan’ (2013) and ‘The Real Group’ (2015), a compilation album for the group’s 30 th anniversary.     Dear Choral and/or Vocal Jazz Educator: The School For Music Vocations at Southwestern Community College is pleased to announce and invite you and your jazz choir to participate in our 19th Annual: Date: Friday & Saturday, April 8th and 9th, 2016 Guest Artists at FRIDAY Night Concert: The Real Group! Please note the following details, as changes have been made from previous years: 1) This Festival is Non-Competitive – clinicians will offer written & recorded comments. You may choose for your group to perform on Friday or Saturday, provided the spots are available. 2) Each choir will perform a 15-20 minute set followed by a short on-stage clinic, followed by a separate off-stage clinic – both the performance and the clinic will be recorded to DVD. 3) Multiple hands-on workshops and clinics, open to ALL festival participants, will take place on each day of the festival. 4) A sound system with up to 16 vocal mics will be furnished. Bass and guitar amps and drum set will be furnished as well. Drummers should bring sticks and/or brushes. Cymbals will be available, or drummer may bring his/her own. 5) Scholarships to the summer SMV Vocal Jazz Camps will be awarded. 6) Friday evening will feature two concerts (at 7:00 and 9:15 pm) featuring The Real Group! Those ensembles wishing to attend both Friday night concerts will be given the opportunity only as space allow after all groups have the opportunity to attend a concert. 7) On Saturday night, the Festival will conclude with a FREE 7-9 pm concert featuring Audio Radiance and Harmonic Convergence, and including a “Parade of VJ Ensembles” where your ensemble may contribute to the concert by singing one piece.

    / ENTERTAINMENT Waterloo takes the prize and creates one of the biggest moments in Eurovision’s history. The seeds of ABBA-mania are sewn. But Frida’s story begins many years earlier in the small Norwegian village of Bjørkåsen, at the tail end of World War II. Anni-Frid Lyngstad was born November 15, 1945 to a Norwegian mother, Synni Lyngstad, and German father Alfred Haase. Alfred was a German soldier, part of the Nazi occupation of Norway. The affair between Frida’s parents was consensual and so when the war ended Synni fled to Sweden with her newborn baby to avoid being persecuted as a collaborator. The children born to German soldiers were labelled tyskerbarnas, or German children, and both mother and child were considered traitors. Many were sent to children’s homes, others were, reportedly, used in experimental drug trials. Shortly after arriving in Sweden, Synni died of kidney failure. She was just 21, leaving Frida to be raised by her grandmother. It was a lonely early childhood, but when music entered her life everything changed. She had natural talent and began singing publicly at the age of 10. Throughout her teenage years she performed in DARK ABBA: Frida Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus. LADY a local dance band before joining a big band led War baby, parentless pariah, pop superstar, regal by Bengt Sardlind. Around this time she met countess and reclusive widow… ABBA’s Anni-Frid fellow musician Ragnar Fredriksson, married Lyngstad has lived many lives. Matthew Myers him, and together they had two children, Hans and Ann Lise-Lotte.
