Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve encompasses over 30,500 acres of permanently protected Sonoran Desert and mountains. It is home to a magnificent array of desert adapted plants and animals, and affords stunning views of the McDowell Mountains. The Scottsdale Preserve also boasts an interconnected network of over 225 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The trails can be accessed from one of eight major trail head facilities, and are open sunrise to sundown. Amenities vary at each trail head; visit the City’s website for more details. Trail maps are available free of charge at all major trail heads, and can also be downloaded by visiting ScottsdaleAZ.gov and searching 'Preserve maps.' The Preserve is divided into two primary regions – the Southern and Northern. TRAIL TIPS • The Southern Region is home to the McDowell Mountains, and contains some of the steeper and more challenging trails of the Preserve. The trails of the southern region are very rocky, • Entrance is free so be sure to wear sturdy footwear. Trailheads: Sunrise, Lost Dog Wash, Gateway, Tom’s Thumb • Trails are open sunrise to sunset • The terrain of the Northern Region is comprised mainly of rolling desert topography, • Motorized vehicles, including punctuated by a series of smaller mountains. Celebrating 30 Years of Science, Education & Stewardship

We’ve hit a major milestone. To commemorate 30 years of service, we’re highlighting our organization’s greatest accomplishments and treasured memories, charting our decades-long journey to emerge as a conservation leader in Arizona and beyond.

STEWARDS

One of the unique aspects of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is the impact that it has on many of the people who have chosen to devote their time and talents to its growth and development.

In the early 1990’s, development in Scottsdale was accelerating and extending eastward toward the McDowell’s. Several residents became interested in how development might impact the mountain range regarded as a signature feature of the City. From its formation in 1991 until mid-1993, the members of the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust had been occupied primarily with defining a vision for preserving the McDowell Mountains. Later as the vision of the organization developed, the name would become the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.

With a small paid staff, the structure of the volunteer organization was critical to the Conservancy. Many non-profit organizations rely on volunteers to solely execute the instructions of staff, but the Conservancy has developed into an organization where the volunteers, known as Stewards, are directly responsible for aspects of the organization.

All non-profit organizations benefit from the work and support of their volunteers and patrons, but very few organizations have such a profound impact on the lives of their volunteers. This unique reciprocal relationship is one of the features of the Conservancy and large part of the stories of its most dedicated stewards.
