7 2015 Presidents Report It has been a big planning and strategic year for us at the Queensland Olympic Council. We have been working hard to ensure we are perfectly placed for our big fundraising initiative in May 2016. Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner 2016 This year saw us appoint Mark Stockwell as the Chairman of the QOC Fundraising Committee and we worked with him to invite and select 35 members to assist him to sell 100 tables to the Gala Ball. August 2015, One Year to Go to Rio, saw us launch our Team Appeal for our Australian Olympic Team. The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, confirmed her government’s continuing support of our Australian Olympic Team with her announcement of $450,000 donation to the Team and the Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner. In November 2015 the invitations were sent to 350 hand picked companies and individuals to be a part of the journey on the Road to Rio and raise funds for our Aussie team. www.bepartofthejourney.com

Pierre de Coubertin Awards The Pierre de Coubertin Awards were again a highlight on the QOC calendar this year. To see the looks on the students faces when presented with their Awards continues to be a favourite time of the year. The presentation was held on Saturday 11 July 2015 at Somerville House in South Brisbane. 106 Recipients attended out of 187 Nominations received this year. Our special guest this year was

8 His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, The Governor of Queensland and Chief Patron of the Queensland Olympic Council. This presentation was a group effort and could not have been so successful without the help of all involved. Lara Davenport Chair Education Commission, Lisa Zoomers, and four University of Queensland students, through the Centre for Olympic Studies, Andrew Bassett, Nicola Murphy, Danielle Sidney and Jake Platen. Also volunteers this year were Maressa Calthorpe-Croft, Stephen Butterworth, Lachlan Beckingham, James Courtney and Rajnay Sumer. Olympians were also involved in the Ceremony. I interviewed 4 Olympians. Duncan Free – Rowing, Leiston Pickett – , Sally Callie – Rowing and John Callie – Rowing. They spoke about their journey and experiences at the Olympics. This was a great insight and inspiration for all the students. We also received 23 International Youth Forum Applications in total. Both Connor van Donselaer from Centenary Heights State High School, and Emily Griffin from Morayfield State High School were chosen to attend the 2015 International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum in Piestany (Slovakia) August 29 to September 13, 2015. Next year marks our 21st birthday for the PDC awards and we look forward to another huge and successful year. Olympians Club of Queensland Julie McDonald continues to work tirelessly on engaging the Olympians, who seem to be increasingly busy each year. Putt putt might be the next activity on the cards. The AOC launched the Australian Alumni which is a national grouping of our Olympians Clubs. The Year Ahead 2016 is the Olympic year. As Rio prepares to play host to the greatest sporting event on the planet, we here in Queensland prepare for the Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner on 21 May 2016. It is all coming together, from Brazilian Dancers, to table sales, to theming and food tasting so the night is just right. A Cocktail Party at Mark Stockwell’s home on February 18 2016 will be the perfect opportunity to set the scene and encourage the sporting world and corporate Brisbane to support the dinner. The Aspire series #RoadtoRio continues around the country to prepare our athletes to be a member of the Australian Olympic Team. In closing, 2015 has been an amazing year of planning, preparation and relationship building to ensure our Athlete Farewell Dinner next year is a huge success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the QOC board, Lisa Zoomers in the QOC office, Mark Stockwell and his Fundraising Committee for all their hard work. Next year is where the rubber hits the road and we can’t wait! #comewithus Yours in sport,

Natalie Cook OAM President 9 2015 Secretary General’s Report 2015 is one of those years where everything starts to come together, well, that’s the theory at least. It is a time to pull all the pieces of the jigsaw together and start to see what the final picture is likely to look like. We have a huge task to achieve with limited resources with which to achieve it but we are progressing well and have achieved the milestones that we set. At the AGM in March Order of Merit Awards were bestowed on Mr Ray Ebert (Vice-President 2001 - present) and Ms Leisel Jones OAM (Swimming) In education we again conducted a very successful Pierre de Coubertin Awards program and a full report of this can be found in the Education Commission Report. This event remains our flagship education event and 2015 saw its 20th year of delivery here in Queensland. Planning is now well advanced for the Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner which will be held on Saturday 21 May 2016 at the Royal International Convention Centre, RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane. Further reports and updates on this event will found throughout other reports. This event is a total team effort of the QOC with input from all of the various sections within the organisation and our external partners. Without this co-ordinated effort it would not be the great event that it proposes to be. The primary focus of our combined efforts is now to deliver this successful event. Administration Report Lisa Zoomers our Administrative Officer continues to work tirelessly and diligently attending to the day to day operation of the office. Without her efforts especially her attention to detail and her exuberant disposition the work of the Board and its various committees would not be as enthusiastically attended to. The Board formally met 4 times during the year and these were well attended by Board Members. There were also a significant number of informal interactions between various members of the Board to progress various activities of the QOC. The results of our deliberations and effort are evidenced by the progressing of the QOC Strategic Agenda. On the AOC front we continue to build this relationship to deliver the range of initiatives that we undertake on their behalf. There were again a number of staff changes at the AOC which has meant not only fresh faces but also fresh ideas. In May Natalie and Lisa attended the AOC AGM and SOC meetings where they continued to make a significant contribution to proceedings. We also hosted a visit from Fiona de Jong – AOC CEO at our last Board meeting for the year where she was able to provide updated information to the Board, we thank her for making her time available to present to the Board. Throughout the year we have continued to be active in our Olympic education programs and in working with athletes to spread our key messages on the Olympic ideals and active healthy lifestyle choices. Work has continued on the process to review our Memorandum and Articles of Association (Constitution) and we have continued the process to upgrade and update these documents so that they may better service our needs. The result of this work will at some stage require us to place these proposed changes before our membership and we would ask that you give them your due consideration at the appropriate time.

10 Thanks We have continued to support a number of activities throughout Queensland with Olympians when requested and again I thank all of them for their continued support of our activities as they have a huge role to play in promoting our activities. Similarly, 2015 again saw the QOC supported by some wonderful volunteers across all our operational areas. Outside of fundraising activities we had numerous volunteers assist us with the Pierre de Coubertin Awards and a number of students from South East Queensland Universities undertake work experience placements with us. We thank them for their support and the work that they perform. Our flagship education program, the Pierre de Coubertin Awards, was again a wonderful success with over 500 guests attending the Awards Ceremony in July. To all the hardworking Education Commission members and volunteers thank you for your continued effort in helping us promote the Olympic ideals through our education program. Our particular appreciation is also extended to Somerville House for hosting the Awards Ceremony again this year. In the background has also been Andrew Guiver and the group that have continued to progress our fundraising activities especially in the run-up to an Olympic year. Your continued efforts are very much appreciated. Andrew continues to provide our much needed and appreciated support through Red and White Events and we thank him for that as well. Before I conclude I would like to restate last year’s comments and pay tribute to the efforts of our Administration Officer, Lisa Zoomers. Her enthusiasm and zest for life is only rivalled by that of our President Natalie Cook. Lisa is a bright effervescent personality who has revitalised the administrative operation of the QOC. Her commitment and attention to detail has resulted in a revitalised approach to many of our initiatives. She makes my job so much easier and as a result I believe the quality of what we do is second to none. Lisa, thank you. Between the enthusiasm of you and Natalie you continue to drive me to achieve better things for the organisation, even if you both are going to wear me out in the process of trying to keep up. Finally, to the Board, thank you for your continued confidence in entrusting me with this role and providing the support, enthusiasm and dedication to guide us through what has been another wonderful year. We continue to achieve a great deal and we have so much more to do. The beauty of working with Olympians is that they inherently know what teamwork is all about and their commitment is second to none, we do have a great team so let the journey continue.

Trevor Beckingham OAM FCPA Secretary-General

11 2015 Education Commission Report The following outlines the education activities of the Queensland Olympic Council for 2015.

Pierre de Coubertin Awards In 2015, 187 secondary students were recipients of the Pierre de Coubertin (PdC) Award, 106 students (58%) attended the Awards ceremony and the Leadership Workshop. Nomination packs were sent out to each Queensland Secondary School in March 2015. Processing applications and preparation of the Awards Ceremony would not have been possible without the incredible work of Lisa Zoomers and the assistance provided by volunteer Centre of Olympic Studies students Nicola Murphy, Danielle Sidney, Jake Platen and Andrew Bassett from the University of Queensland. The thoroughness of her event management meant that the delivery of the Ceremony went ahead without disruption or delay. Awards Presentation Ceremony The Pierre de Coubertin Awards Ceremony was held on Saturday the 11th of July at Somerville House, South Brisbane. Our resident Pierre de Coubertin MC, Victoria Carthew ran the 2015 event; as always, she engaged the audience with her knowledge, humour and passion for the Olympic Movement. Our special guests this year included the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency Paul de Jersey AC and the Honourable Bill Byrne MP, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for Sport and Racing. Both the Governor and Minister presented awards to our recipients and the Governor spoke to our recipients making it a very special experience for the students. Natalie Cook interviewed the Olympic Panel consisting of Olympians: Leiston Pickett, Sally Callie, John Callie and Duncan Free was a highlight of the ceremony for the students and their guests. The Olympians shared stories about their experiences at the Olympic Games and gave advice to our rising leaders. This part of the ceremony is always a wonderful insight to each Athletes journey.

12 This year we again included works of 3 students into the ceremony. These pieces were selected by Nicola, Danielle, Jake and Andrew, our UQ student volunteers. A Guitar Piece by Danielle Brown, Redbank Plains State High School; and 2 Literary Pieces by Keegan Betts, Emmaus College and Daniel Groundwater, Iona Collge. Olympians in attendance included: • Duncan Free OAM (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008) Rowing • Leiston Pickett (2012) Swimming • Sally Callie (1996, 2000, 2004) Rowing • John Callie (1996) Rowing • Natalie Cook OAM (1996, 2000,2004, 2008, 2012) Beach Volleyball • Kim Cooper (1996) Softball • Lara Davenport OAM (2008) Swimming • Julie McDonald OAM We were pleased to have Channel 7’s ‘The Great South East’ join us to film a segment featuring the importance of the Olympic Movement and celebrate the Pierre de Coubertin Awards. This gave an insight into what this prestigious Award Ceremony and Workshop looks like and was aired on Channel 7 on the 23rd of August 2015. A special thanks to the Queensland University students that volunteered their time to make the Workshop and Award Ceremony a success - students were identified by Ian Jobling during their Olympic Studies. As well as the UQ students, we had 5 volunteers at the Ceremony - Lachlan Beckingham, James Courtney, Stephen Butterworth, Maressa Calthorpe-Croft and Rajnay Sumer some who returned to contribute their time to the Queensland Olympic family for a second year. The future is bright, the future is bold in the hands of Queensland’s young Pierre de Coubertin Award Recipients - Our sincerest congratulations, and best wishes for the future.

13 Olympic Leadership Workshop The 2015 Award recipients were offered the opportunity to be involved in the Leadership Workshop, and the A.S.P.I.R.E in Action Program - an extension Leadership Program with the Queensland Olympic Council working with Outward Bound. The Leadership Workshop offered Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients an opportunity to interact with Olympians during experiential activities (facilitated by Outward Bound), and interactive presentation that developed a further understanding of the Olympic Movement, enhanced students ability to identify personal and professional priorities and values, enabled students to connect these values with leadership, and discuss the application of these leadership skills in the community. We were pleased to welcome eight Olympians to the Workshop and Awards Ceremony where they engaged in Questions and Answer sessions with the Award recipients and their families. During the lunch break Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients were able to discuss the opportunities and support available for Athlete Career and Education at University, with the University of Queensland, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and Australian Catholic University displaying information on the day. Student Feedback This year, participating students were asked to provide feedback about the Leadership Workshop. 81 recipients completed this survey. • 100% of participants agreed that the Olympians enhanced the workshop experience, sharing their knowledge and experiences • 95% of the participants enjoyed meeting other PdC recipients • 92% of participants were confident that the Workshop activities increased their understanding of principles and behaviours of good leadership As demonstrated in the following anecdotal feedback, students value their participation in the Awards: “I really enjoyed the physical workshop as it kept me really engaged” “Really great, would highly recommend. Thank you to the organisers” “The outdoor teamwork activities were really beneficial” ‘ASPIRE in Action’ An additional personal development opportunity was offered to students who received the Pierre de Coubertin Award this year. It was a unique opportunity and challenge to interact with their peers for a day of ‘ASPIRE in Action’ hosted by Outward Bound.

14 It was a day of leadership focused, experiential fun and adventure filled outdoor activities where the students had the opportunity to live the ASPIRE values in a shared, common experience. A: ATTITUDE S: SPORTSMANSHIP P: PRIDE I: INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY R: RESPECT E: EXPRESS YOURSELF “After participating in the ASPIRE in Action program I have more self-belief because I was given the opportunity to push my boundaries and learn more abou my comfort zones in a supportive team environment” Lucy Blair, The Rockhampton Grammar School, 2015 Participant

International Youth Forum Again this year we were fortunate to have the opportunity to nominate students to be a part of an Australian delegation to the IYF that was held in Piešťany (Slovakia) from August 29 – September 13, 2015. We received 23 nominations from this years Pierre de Coubertin recipients and Connor van Donselaer and Emily Griffin were our nominations to the AOC and both were for fortunate in being selected to attend. We include both of their reports on their attendance at the IYF. Connor van Donselaer To say I was shocked, surprised and extremely excited at my selection into the Australian delegation for the 10th Pierre de Coubertin forum is an understatement. The opportunity to represent my school, my family, friends and most of all my nation, in a country over 13000 kilometers away was one that that I embraced with both hands. The trip brought together eight sportspeople from multiple Australian states with a mutual love of participating and promoting sport in the community. From day one, the group’s interconnection and ability to work positively together overcame the nerves and hurdles that

15 inevitably face a group of eight strangers travelling half way across the world together. The group was met with heat and sun in Piestany, the biggest and best known spa town in Slovakia, which was to host the 10th International Pierre de Coubertin forum. Group forums, lectures and sporting activities as well as precious sightseeing time were on the agenda for the packed six day program. A stand out for me were the group discussions, which brought together students from different cultures, who often spoke completely different languages. Despite this, through positive collaboration, some extremely unique ideas on how to enhance participation in sport for all, in line with Pierre de Coubertin’s emphasis on equity, access and fair participation, emerged. Furthermore, the participation in sporting activities against athletes from almost every continent was incredible, with a cross country race (my preferred sport), to conclude the week. The forum was followed by a week of homestay organised by the Australian Olympic Committee and Don Bosco Gymnasium, a school situated half an hour out of the Austrian capital city, Vienna. The week gave myself and my fellow delegate’s insight into the school and sporting life of Austrian students, while showcasing the beautiful Austrian countryside and the magnificent city of Vienna. My family, the Fitzinger’s, were extremely welcoming and made the week unbelievably interesting and comfortable. I would like to thank the Australian and Queensland Olympic Committees for the opportunity to represent our nation on an International scale with likeminded athletes, whom I hope I will never lose contact with. Emily Griffin Recently on the 28th of August, 2015 I took the 30hr flight journey over to Piestany, Slovakia, to attend the bi-annual International Pierre De Coubertin forum. It was a breathtaking experience; having never travelled overseas, this was an opportunity for me to gain experience and knowledge that I would have otherwise never achieved. After endeavouring the 30 hours of travelling, the Australian team finally arrived in Piestany and the program began! It started off with a warm welcome from the Gymnasium and an opening ceremony to remember. The Australian team began each day with a morning jog around the surreal town of Piestany. We would return to a tasty European style breakfast, filled with lots of meats, cheeses and lots of different bread. Each day we would partake in activities including lectures by Professor N. Muller on the life of Pierre De Coubertin; tasters of different sporting disciplines (including Paralympics) and various discussion and art groups. In between we would receive a beautiful three course meal always filled with potato and chicken schnitzel! Towards the end of the week began the test of sporting disciplines, including the 60m , , basketball test, cross country and 50m swim. Throughout the disciplines all participants were extremely encouraging and positive. Having never participated ion long jump I felt extremely confident as a result of the inspiring athletes around me. The program closed with a picturesque tour of Kostelec and Beckov Castle and a closing ceremony that I will never forget. We paraded through the town country by country, wearing our colours with pride after what we have accomplished. It was a feeling like no other as others

16 lined the streets clapping and cheering as they bid us goodbyes. The biggest highlight for me was the uniting of countless different cultures and languages. The forum opened my eyes to an entirely different world; a world where individuals of different mother tongues could unite and work together for their love of sport. During the program, we were tested through a number of different sporting, artistic, cultural, academic, and community disciplines. From these activities and challenges we were given, enabled me to challenge myself in a way I never thought possible. Previously, if someone asked me to complete something artistic I would have thought it impossible. Now I believe anyone can achieve all 5 of these disciplines with a little help from others. Most importantly, during this program I was able to make friends and memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Overall, experiencing the rich history of the buildings, the ancient foods and the culture of the people was an amazing eye-opener to what the rest of the world has to offer. Meet with the Champ Queensland senior students experienced an exciting insight into the life of elite athletes and Olympic Champions, as the ‘Meet with a Champ’ program ventured to State High Schools in Craigslea and Coolum. Students from Craigslea, Wavell and Kedron State High Schools were lucky enough to meet a couple of ’s best swimmers, Lara Davenport (Beijing 2008) and Meagen Nay (Beijing 2008/London 2012), who shared an insight into life in the pool on Thursday October 15th. The one hour discussion featured experiences on how Meagen and myself became involved in swimming, the positive impact it’s had on their lives, as well as our journey to the Olympic Games. During the session the students were engaged and I loved discussing my experiences and journey to the Olympic Games. This session was very sentimental for me as I remembered the moment Elli Overton, three-time Olympic swimmer, gave me a pair of pants from her Australian uniform when I was a student. “They were my lucky pair of pants!” Fellow swimmer and dual Olympian, Meagen Nay, who had recently announced her retirement from competitive swimming, said students asked her a lot about staying motivated. “They wanted to know if I have those days when I had no motivation and if I didn’t want to go to training,” said Meagen who burst onto the Australian Olympic Team by breaking one of the oldest Australian records, Nicole Stevenson’s 200m record set at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Meagen also explained that a lack of motivation is just one of the challenges of being an elite athlete, saying that without difficult days, athletes cannot appreciate the highs of elite sport. Continuing to spread the Olympic movement, I then joined London 2012 and Rio 2016 hopeful Shara Gillow (Cycling) at Coolum State High School on the Friday. We spoke to students from Coolum, as well as visiting schools, Mathew Flinders Anglican College and Noosa Districts State High School.

17 Hailing from Nambour, around the corner from Coolum, Shara said it felt very special to chat to local students. “It’s nice being a local and seeing some of the kids here aspiring to be elite Olympic athletes,” said Shara, who took up the sport of cycling at 18 years of age as she followed in the footsteps of her father who also competed in the Olympic Games. Shara competed in the women’s road race event in London, finishing in the top position of the three Aussie debutants, and still remembers Olympians coming to speak to her during her school days. “Those Olympians made me aspire to go to the Olympic Games and be like them, which is why it’s special that I can now talk to students about my Olympic journey.” Conclusion The success of the Education Commission can be attributed to consistent attention to detail and energy of the many volunteers that make up the Queensland Olympic Council Education Commission. To the Education Commission, we thank you for your time, knowledge and assistance. To Ian Jobling (the Olympic Guru) and the outstanding students from the Centre of Olympic Studies who engaged in the Pierre de Coubertin Awards, and assisted the Queensland Olympic Council Education Commission throughout 2015 we are pleased to have worked alongside such driven and dedicated students that embody the joy found in the effort of the Olympic Movement. To Kim Cooper and Lisa Zoomers, your mentoring, attention to detail, guidance and strong relationships with our stakeholders contribute to the success of the Education Commission - thank you. The Education Commission are enthusiastic about what can be achieved in 2016. May the peace of Olympia be with you,

Lara Davenport OAM Chair
