Farith Fraija Norwood Febrero 2014 Prólogo: Pequeño aviso para leer a Mazzeo, que lee a Mariátegui — {19} Volver sobre la obra de un clásico siempre es un desafío que encierra grandes riesgos y posibilidades. Un autor es clásico si, además de ser un intérprete lúcido de su tiempo, sus percepciones trascienden lo epocal y continúan siendo productivas para entender las problemáticas del pre- sente, por eso suele ser recuperado una y otra vez, bajo las circunstancias que se renuevan en la historia. De ahí que el principal peligro resida en un retorno superfluo sobre lo vastamente transitado, sin demasiado aporte ni originalidad. A la vez, y como contracara, la mirada de los grandes pensadores puede ser una linterna poderosa para iluminar los dilemas del presente. Miguel Mazzeo ha tomado el riesgo de llevarnos a leer nuevamente a José Carlos Mariátegui, uno de los grandes teóricos y políticos de Nues- tra América, y ha logrado no solo sortear las trampas de la obviedad o la banalización a las que tienden siempre las revisitas, sino que nos ha abierto las compuertas para dejar fluir hacia el futuro las potentes intui- ciones y los anhelos del peruano. Su lectura mariateguiana, a partir de la noción de “elementos de socialismo práctico”, teje el lazo exacto entre lo dicho y lo actuado en su perspectiva histórica por el Amauta y aquello Prólogo {20}Pequeño aviso para leer a Mazzeo, que lee a Mariátegui que sedimenta como fermento para abonar el camino emancipatorio de las luchas populares del presente, que es lo que inquieta a Mazzeo y por eso consigue conmovernos especialmente con su aporte. Un rasgo central de este libro es que refiere a un hombre firmemente arraigado en su tiempo, con la mente y las entrañas, y está escrito por otro hombre comprometido a fondo con la militancia social y política de nuestros días. Mazzeo toma del peruano más que las palabras y la modalidad del ensayo como cauce propicio para unir rigurosidad inte- lectual y belleza, razonamiento mesurado y pasión sostenida. Toma la esencia del compromiso activo con el hacer transformador de su tiempo. Por eso es capaz de penetrar a fondo en el pensamiento de Mariátegui y traducirnos al traductor y traerlo a caminar con nosotros en la búsqueda de un horizonte de cambios radicales.

McNally rewrote “Socialism from Below” in 1997; this version has been circulated by the New Socialist Group in Canada. He has recently rethought and rewritten his social- ism-from-below perspective in a new book (2002). Draper himself went on to publish four volumes on Karl Marx’s Theory of Revolution,elaborating on his arguments.

Marxism and the Solidarity Economy: Toward a New Theory of Revolution Abstract In the twenty-first century, it is time that Marxists updated the conception of socialist revolution they have inherited from Marx, Engels, and Lenin. Slogans about the “dictatorship of the proletariat” “smashing the capitalist state” and carrying out a social revolution from the commanding heights of a reconstituted state are completely obsolete. In this article I propose a reconceptualization that accomplishes several purposes: first, it explains the logical and empirical problems with Marx’s classical theory of revolution; second, it revises the classical theory to make it, for the first time, logically consistent with the premises of historical materialism; third, it provides a (Marxist) theoretical grounding for activism in the solidarity economy, and thus partially reconciles Marxism with anarchism; fourth, it accounts for the long-term failure of all attempts at socialist revolution so far.

    tripleC 18 (2): 685-700, 2020 http://www.triple-c.at The Socialist Macro-Sect in the ‘Digital Age’: The Victorian Socialists’ Strategy for Assembling a Counterpublic By Ian Anderson RMIT, Melbourne, Australia, [email protected], jetpack.zoob.net Abstract: The Victorian Socialists (VicSocialists) are a socialist electoral organisation in Aus- tralia which has had some electoral success as a regional fourth party behind the Greens. This article seeks to address what kind of organisation the VicSocialists are, what communi- cative techniques the organisation employs in assembling a counterpublic or constituency, and what this case study illustrates in terms of the broader formation of counterpublics in the ‘digital age’. This article characterises the VicSocialists as a “macro-sect”, a new organisa- tional form. The macro-sect is something more than a socialist micro-sect and less than a mass party, while optimistically conceiving of itself as a proto-mass party. The macro-sect strategy is distinct from another 21st-century party-form, the digital party. Unlike the digital parties, which tend to fetishise digital media, the VicSocialists treat digital media soberly as just one tool in the formation and mobilisation of counterpublics, a tool with serious limita- tions. Additionally, digital media is complementary with face-to-face communication (such as doorknocking) in important ways. A study of a parallel US macro-sect, the DSA, similarly found that activists were ambivalent about digital media, yet strongly used it for promotion. This commonality with the DSA suggests the international emergence of a new organisation- al form, with a distinct communicative strategy for forming counterpublics in the so-called ‘digital age’ – one which necessarily uses digital media, yet does not fetishise it.

This paper excavates a small piece of the hidden intellectual history of the FSM. The Mind of Clark Kerr, a short political pamphlet written by Hal Draper to ‘generalise the issues for the embattled students’, was dubbed ‘the Bible of the Free Speech Movement’ yet its importance is invariably missed in accounts of the FSM. In this paper I examine the immediate political context and influence of the pamphlet which presented a critique of the multiversity and of its theoretician, the UC president Clark Kerr and trace the intellectual roots of Draper’s critique to his development of the theory of bureaucratic collectivism. 1. Contexts Immediate Political Context and Influence On October 1 1964 Hal Draper found himself making a speech in his stocking feet standing on top of a police car surrounded by hundreds of students engaged in a sit-down protest against the arrest of one of their fellows. An odd figure to find at the birth of the U.S. student movement, in 1964 Draper was a fifty year-old university librarian as far as most of the students were concerned. Only a few also knew him as an indefatigable socialist theoretician and marxist intellectual of the first rank.1 Draper had been a militant of the US anti-Stalinist left since the 1930’s as a young leader of the Student Strikes Against War in New York, as editor of the socialist publications The New International and Labor Action and as a leading member of the Workers Party (renamed Independent Socialist League) from 1940-1958.

He served as Recording Secretary for the UAW-CIO Packard Local 190 and edited its newspaper in the 1930s and 1940s. Mr. Lindahl left the local in 1951 feeling that the labor movement no longer had a place for him. He earned a Master's degree from Wayne State University in Sociology in 1954 and later earned his living as a self-employed publisher in the Detroit area in various fields including retail, banking, and medicine. The James Lindahl Collection contains proceedings, reports, newspaper clippings, and election information pertaining to the UAW-CIO and its Packard Local 190 from the 1930s into the early 1950s. It also contains Mr. Lindahl's graduate school papers on local union membership and participation. The collection also contains publications, including pamphlets, books, periodicals, flyers and handbills, from many organizations such as the UAW, CIO, other labor unions and organizations, and the U.S. government from the 1930s into the early 1950s.
