Description: Definition: stra•tig•ra•phy |strəˈtigrəfē| The analysis of the order and position of layers of strata related to a geological time and archaeological remains.

Coming out of the Madelinetosh MadMay 2013 challenge to design and knit an original item, Stratigraphy is a multi colored shawl that gets it’s shaping from the simplest form of short rows and eyelet lace stripes stacked and divided with a contrasting reverse stockinette welt stripe.

Finished Size: 72” across top edge, 30” deep at center

Needles: Size US 7 40” circular or size for Needle tip or DPN 1 size larger for working I-cord

Notions: Darning needle Smooth waste in a similar weight

Gauge: Pattern Instructions: In stockinette stitch: 17sts in 4” Provisional crochet cast on 300 sts using waste yarn. Yarn: Madelinetosh Pashmina, 110g/360yds in three colors: Stripe: Using C2 C1: Welts & I-cord edging, approx 230 yards R1 (RS): K C2: Primary stripes, approx 225 yards R2 (WS): P to 30 sts before end, turn C3: Secondary stripes, approx 180 yards R3 (RS): PM, (YO, K2tog) to 30 sts before end, turn R4,6,8 (WS): PM, sl 1, P to 11 before M, turn R5,7,9 (RS): PM, (YO, K2tog) to 11 sts before M, turn

Abbreviations: R10 (WS): P to end, removing markers

Stratigraphy (free version) Page 2 Stripe: Using C3 Knit the same as C2 Stripe

Repeat Welt

Repeat until five C2 stripes and four C3 stripes are completed with a welt between each, stopping at the end of the fifth C2 stripe.

Bind off Set-up: Using C1 Knit 1 row. At end of row, pick up and knit 51 side selvage stitches (3 sts per stripe and 3 sts per welt), 300 provisional cast-on stitches and 51 selvage stitches (638 sts).

Cast on 4 sts using backwards loop cast on.

I-Cord bindoff: Use 1 size larger needle for the working needle

Top and bottom edges: K3, K2tog. Slip 4 sts back to left needle repeat 5 times K4, slip back to left needle & repeat from beginning

Selvage edges: K3, K2tog. Slip 4 sts back to left needle repeat 3 times K4, slip back to left needle & repeat from beginning

Finishing: Graft beginning and ending of I-cord stitches together Weave in ends and block
