25° Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23rd, 2018 My dear parish family, Peace be with you! In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us: “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” The scandal of this Gospel is that Jesus, the leader and teacher of the disciples, will be reduced to the least when He is handed over and dies. How do the disciples react to this scandalous teaching? They argue among themselves about who is the greatest! Jesus rightly reduces them to silence. The disciples do not understand greatest and least, first and last, servant of all. They do not understand that Jesus’ own death is a call to die to self, to choose to become the greatest by being the least. Confronted with this saving mystery, we ought to all be reduced to silence—but now for the right reason. The “me first” way of acting began in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve’s disobedience and continues to our own time. When Jesus teaches we are to be least and servant of all, He is calling us to become who God origi- nally created us to be. The “me first” movement is rooted in self-centeredness, which goes against our identity rooted in Christ. As Christians, we are called to be “Christ-centered” and then “Others-centered”, dismissing the attitude that its “all about me”. Let us fix our eyes on Christ and pray: “Lord, empty me or myself, so that I can be filled with you.” If you have made a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA), please make sure that you do your part. It is im- perative that we meet our goal. Remember much of this money goes to financing the education of your future priests. Let us support our men in formation. Thank you. We are blessed at Sacred Heart to have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday, from 7:00AM to 5:15PM. If this is something that we wish to sustain long-term, we need people to sign-up for an hour (approx. 2 people/hour). Other than the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is no greater prayer time than Eucharistic Adora- tion. Please contact Mrs. Mary Shockley, if you would like to volunteer for an hour each week. Remember the words of our blessed Lord, “Could you not keep watch with me for one hour?” + + + + + + + Sacred Silence is a beautiful gift that allows us to encounter the Divine. I’d ask that if you’d like to visit and share, please do so outside of the Church so that we can preserve a spirit of Sacred Silence and give our fellow parish- ioners the opportunity to encounter God in the silence. This is one of the dispositions that is lost because of the busyness of the world. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. That’s all for now! Have a blessed week and be assured of my prayers! In His Joy, Fr. Leon J. Vigil † 25° Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23rd, 2018 Miracle of the Month St. Joseph of Cupertino Joseph of Cupertino, born Giuseppe Maria Desa, was an Italian Franciscan monk who was born in 1603 under very humble circumstances. His father died before his birth and his mother was forced to sell their home to settle the large amount of debt he had left. For this reason, Joseph’s mother gave birth to him in a stable. Beginning when he was a young child, Joseph began to experience ecstatic visions that left him in awe! Unfortunately, this led to much scorn and even more adversity as a teen- ager and young adult. As a teenager, feeling a calling to the religious life, he applied to the Conventual Fran- ciscan Friars. However, he was denied due to his poor education. The same year, he applied to the Capuchin Friars in the town of Martino; he was accepted! Due to his constant ecstasies, he was deemed unfit to perform his duties and was subsequently dismissed. He returned home to the ridicule of his family. Almost immediately, he returned to the Conventual Friar and pleaded for an opportunity to allow him to assist at their stables. They agreed and he spent the next 5 years doing so. The friars, impressed with his work ethic, decided to accept him into their order. On March 28, 1628, he was ordained a priest. He would then spend the next 15 years at Madonna delle Grazie. It was there that his ecstasies began to increase in frequency and he began to levitate. The levitation would mostly take place during Mass and while praying the Divine Office. Over 70 incidents of his levitation have been recorded. He was seen as a holy person by the local community and surrounding areas but unfortunately deemed disruptive by his superiors and fellow clergy members. For this reason, he was soon thereafter confined to a small cell and prevented from joining with the community. Sadly, the events of levitation were deemed to be the result of witchcraft and he was denounced to the inquisition. He was sent from one friary to the next for the next 18 years as he was under observation. He was eventually cleared of all charges. Finally, in 1657, he was allowed to return to a Conventual community in Osimo where, on September 18th, 1663, he died at the age of 60. He was beatified in 1753 and Canonized a little more than 100 years after his death in 1767 by Pope Pius VI. He is considered the patron saint of test-takers. 25° Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23rd, 2018 2018-2019 CCD/Youth Group/RCIA Schedule Classes for Kindergarten - 5th grade will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00p.m. to 7:15p.m. Middle school and High school grades will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00p.m. to 7:15p.m. Youth Group will meet on Wednesdays from 7:15p.m. to 8:30p.m. RCIA will also meet on Wednesdays from 6:00p.m. to 7:30p.m. For more information, please call your Director of Religious Education, Lora Rodriguez at (575)309-8130.
