COVID-19 infections in a fully vaccinated person An expected occurrence with COVID-19 vaccines (and any vaccine) • COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective but not 100% • Community transmission of COVID-19 is still at moderate level • Many reported breakthroughs are asymptomatic infections • Some are likely not new infections • Clinical trial effectiveness was based on symptomatic disease Concerning breakthrough infections • Hospitalizations, deaths, severe illness due to COVID-19 • Also expected to occur, but should be uncommon • Might represent variant strains for which vaccines are less protective*

11 Vaccine Breakthrough Monitoring • CDC reported 5,813 breakthrough cases as of 4/13 • 7% hospitalized and 1% died • Includes non-COVID hospitalizations and deaths • 29% asymptomatic • 75 million people in the US fully vaccinated • ACPHD had 93 reported breakthrough cases as of 4/14 • No hospitalizations or deaths due to COVID-19 among these cases • 65% asymptomatic – mostly tested for routine screening • 340,000 full vaccinated • CDC and CDPH shifting to focus on hospitalizations and deaths • COVID vaccines are excellent - breakthroughs are rare but expected events

PURPOSE: to gather information about COVID-19 vaccine beliefs and attitudes among Alameda County residents that could help reach diverse audiences with tailored health promotion and education materials.

CONTENT: whether and when people intend to get a vaccine, attitudes about vaccine safety; efficacy and value for prevention COVID-19 infection; factors influencing their decision; where people turn for trusted information; demographics.
