BOARDROOM

President’ s Pen wasquash.com.au Over the last 12 months WA Squash has been through a raft of changes in an effort to ensure the future of Squash in this state. After election of office bearers 12 months ago, we at WA Squash, were very fortunate to have come onto the board through the election of Glenn Hitch. Glenn was approached to take on the arduous task of leading the board through some very tough times. Glenn, along with Neil Butler, Dean Williams, Carsten Frederiksen and gratefully supported by Kane Fasolo and staff at Mirrabooka squash, relocated office desks, boxes and needed equipment at the new office at Westminster and moved the remainder into storage. That being said, WA Squash must extend and enormous thank you to WA Police Legacy, who have provided storage for our excess furniture, boxes, tables, shields and cabinets at their office in South Perth. As in all cases having contacts does assist. The move to Westminster has been completed with all staff settling in and working extremely hard to catch up and make contact with all our member clubs, providing information sessions, answering questions on our situation and what the plan for the future is. The development of sub committees and working parties, all with volunteers involved is seeing a movement forward, albeit slowly while we get WA Squash back into the minds of players of all levels and see the growth within clubs and towns both metropolitan and country areas. As of January, Dean Williams resigned from the board to take up the position as Acting General Manager for WA Squash. With his knowledge of the game, extensive range of contacts throughout the state, his drive, enthusiasm and desire for changes whilst working with member clubs has assisted with the ability of clubs to be fully aware at all times, about what is happening. The hardest thing has been keeping Dean to a standard 12 hour day! The 2019 AGM was well attended by Life Members, member clubs and visitors who were provided with a full and open disclosure of the issues and finances from the last twelve months. Five people nominated for the four positions available on the board. This shows faith in the direction being taken under the guidance of Glenn and the current board, with people willing to become involved on the WA Squash board and contribute and assist with the direction the board is taking and help to keep that going. Congratulations to Deborah Hoffrichter (Esperance) and Carsten Frederiksen (Subi Kings) were re elected. Congratulations and welcome to Leigh Kaye (Mirrabooka) and Katy Scott (Belmont) who were elected. At the first meeting of the new board all positions will be vacated with election of Executive members to take place before commencing the process of driving forward. A large thank you is extended to Don Huffer for his years of service and for staying on in a voluntary position to ensure a smooth transition into Westminster and to allow Dean to find his feet. We wish him well for the future. As we look forward our focus will be directed at consulting with our members to discuss and consider new ways of increasing participation and service. BOARDROOM

He was also runner- up at the World Open four times, losing to Hunt in the finals of 1976, 1979 and 1980, and to Jahangir in 1984.

This summary puts a few things in perspective when you read Dean’s Diary - see next page! EAN’S IARY March proved to be very challenging as we moved towards the AGM on the 27th of March. I welcome the two new Board Members in Katy Scott and Leigh Kaye. We are settling in to our new premises and whilst the initial thought that Westminster was a little bit out of the way, it has been quite OK if you miss the busy periods of traffic.

We had a number of events on during March which will be highlighted in this edition of SWAN.

As an added piece to my “Diary” I thought I would go back and tell the story of some very interesting days as a touring professional squash player and how it all came about .

I turned “pro” in early 1978 just as ISPA (now PSA) was formed and whilst there was nothing stopping you turning “Pro” you would not consider it if you had not competed as an Amateur at a high level. In 1977 I won the Australian Amateur before winning the Scottish Amateur as the lead up to the British Amateur. That filled me with confidence and I then made the semi- final of the British Amateur which was enough to show that I could compete at the highest level.

My first ranking was number 24 in the world and I went to the ISPA Championships, outside the top 16 who played, but I went to watch Geoff Hunt play and maybe get to practice with him. I just finished a session with the great one and the first rounds were on that day and I was showering when the promoter said that someone had pulled out and they could not get a replacement in time, would I play?

I grabbed the chance and got changed into wet gear and started to get ready to play in 30 minutes against Qamar Zaman, ranked 2 at that time. Just as I was getting called up, Mo Asran arrived (he was supposed to be sick and had forfeited ) and a few words were spoken and we both went onto the court to play Zaman who was already on the court. All hell broke loose!!!

Cut to the chase ... the promoter stuck to his guns (he is still a life long friend!!) and I went on to play. I lost 0-9, 0-9, 1-9 but with the extra points and a bit of cash I was able to break into the top 16 and make my way into the top 10 a year later. You have to take your chances !!!! Lots of stories to tell.

squashmedia .com.au JUNIOR COMMITTEE UPDATE Please remember to share the excitement of squash with your friends and extended family - not only is squash incredibly fun, the statistics I've seen indicate it is the safest and healthiest sport! Juniors are the future of squash and we need to invest in them. More attractive pathways and opportunities will aid the rebuilding of junior numbers. I commend the Board and WA Squash for commencing work on improving the school's program, expanding the number of viable junior programs, reversing the trend of decreasing squash facilities and building the pathways needed to bridge juniors to seniors and broader opportunities in squash. Our triumph in the 2018 Australian Junior Championships (AJC) teams event is remarkable given the strength of the Queensland team and the Squash Australia resources centred in Queensland. Thank you to all who were involved. It is unfortunate that the Squash Australia junior squash events could use some improvement. For example, only two other States fielded full teams and matches were few and far between for some of our team members. Squash Australia will no doubt at some stage respond to reinvigorate their events. Australian titles will always be valued most highly. The AJC opportunity will continue to be supported. Our direction is to expand opportunity and pathways for WA juniors. The Junior Committee will seek to find the best balance. State squad / team fundraising activities have commenced. Owing to multiple tour opportunities, the fundraising policy will be updated by the Junior Committee. It is anticipated key tenants of the current policy will remain allowing people the choice to just pay the costs or to put some hard work into fundraising. Under the current policy, fundraisers benefit from up to 50% of fundraising successes attributed to their direct efforts plus share equally in the broader pool created from the second 50%. So, please join in the fundraising and make your suggestions known. Congratulations to Abel Jin, Gregory Chan, Oscar Curtis and Daniel Marsh for being selected to represent Australia in the Trans-Tasman Test Series with New Zealand on 11-12 April 2019 in Auckland. Also, good luck to all players who have entered the Oceania Junior Open and the Australian Junior Open also in April. Please get your entries in for the upcoming WA Junior tournaments, and metro players, please remember the country tournaments are a fantastic experience and worth getting to. Please refer to the latest tournament calendar attached to this newsletter and visit the WA Squash website (https://wasquash.com.au/) for entry forms and the latest information . The Junior Committee will generally be organising its meetings to be held during State Squad / Team training sessions, which currently are occurring at Brentwood. You do not need to be a Committee Member to attend and your ideas and contributions are welcome. In due course a schedule for meetings and the 2019 committee will be published on the WA Squash website. Please feel free to contact any Committee Member with your suggestions. Sue Cowell Reports

The “Jindalee Family Dental ” Marmion Junior Squash Classic was held on 16th & 17 th March 2019. We also welcomed our new sponsor “Decathlon ” who provided many Instagram tweets throughout the tournament with lots of 'likes' from all around the world!

40 juniors entered the individual event and 22 juniors participated in the doubles. The tournament attracted entries from Marmion, Cambridge, Mirrabooka, Maddington- Gosnells, Vic Park, Blue Gum, Narrogin, Moora, and Mandurah.

Over all great squash was played over both days. We are very appreciative of Tournament Referee Pam Addison who helped along our new players with their marking and refereeing duties.

The individual format consisted of a first Round 9-player playoff. The 4 winners went into Pool A for their Division, and the 4 losers went into Pool B for their Division. The Pools were then a round robin between the four players. Each player then got 4 matches for the tournament.

Due to two late withdrawals, this caused a bye in both Division 1 and Division 5. Not wanting our juniors to miss out on their matches, our “Guest Player” took on the arduous task of competing in both Divisions to the grateful thanks of us all as we witnessed great sportsmanship and team camaraderie in this outcome.

Adam Strunk [Decathlon representative] presented the Decathlon Sportsmanship Awards to Lachlan Cairns (Cambridge) and Wernigh De Lange (Marmion).

Marmion Squash Club Encouragement Awards were presented to Joshua Slim (Marmion), Ruby Foo (Mirrabooka) and Jessica Jellis ( Marmion).

The Doubles event was once again a huge success and played on Saturday afternoon after the completion of the individual matches. Doubles partners were based on abilities with higher ranked juniors playing with the lower ranked juniors. Thank you to our “Guest Player” and to Josh Blakey (reserve for Daniel Marsh who rolled an ankle just prior to the doubles starting!) for making up the final pairings. 12 doubles pairs were split into 3 Pools of 4 who then played an eight-minute PAR match against each other. Points were then tallied to determine the winner of each Pool. The 3 winning teams were then placed into a Round Robin where once again they played each other for 8 minutes. The Winning team had the most points.

DOUBLES RESULTS: Winner: Hannah Slyth (Blue Gum) & Waldo Vorster (Mandurah) Runner Up: Maxine Salter (Marmion) & Kiran Byles (Marmion) 3rd Place: Will Rawling (Marmion) & Damon Blakey (Marmion)

A big vote of thanks to Josh Blakey for helping on the Tournament Desk and taking control of organising matches and updating the tournament board whilst I tackled Sporty HQ and inputted the match results. Thanks also to our wonderful parents for manning the canteen and providing some yummy food throughout the weekend. And a special thank you to our “Guest Player” Callum Blakey! You made our tournament a special event!!

Once again thanks to all our sponsors Jindalee Family Dental, Decathlon, The Squash Factory and Marmion Squash Club.

WA MASTERS UPDATE By Janis Haswell National Masters – Gold Coast If you haven't already done so, it's well and truly time to start making plans to attend the Australian National Masters Squash Championships in Queensland (2- 13 September).

It's especially important to register your interest with WA Masters to play in the teams event as soon as possible either by letting Terry Brookes know, or by sending an email to [email protected], as we need to submit teams as soon as we can.

The Gold Coast is a fabulous destination for the event for many reasons, not the least of them being the very pleasant spring weather there (perfect for squash) and the many close-by spectacular attractions to visit in the squash downtimes. Keep a look out for more details on the Queensland Masters website at http://www.qmsa.asn.au and via the WA Masters emails that are regularly circulated.

Coming Masters events WA Masters Hilton Classic The next Masters event on the calendar is the WA Masters Hilton Classic, Saturday May 4 and Sunday May 5. This Individuals tournament is based on Matrix rankings, and is organised in divisions each with eight players, so everyone will have three matches (body willing). The entry form will be circulated soon for this event.

WA Masters State Championships To participate in the National Masters Squash Championships, it is generally required that you have played in at least one accredited Masters tournament in the year. The State Championships event is a good opportunity to do this. Friday July 19 to Sunday July 21 are the dates to keep available for the tournament, and the venue and more details will be provided closer to the date. It is a really well attended tournament, with plenty of great squash to watch as well as play.

Entering the events the WA Masters committee organises demonstrates your interest in WA MASTERS UPDATE By Janis Haswell playing in tournaments, and indicates the overall interest of the Masters community in having tournaments throughout the year. The committee, and WA Masters Squash very much appreciates the support you give by participating in these events; it keeps the Masters a healthy, going concern here in WA.

Mid year get-together This year's mid year social function will be lunch at the lovely, iconic heritage pub, the Grosvenor, on Sunday 28 July. Once again Masters will provide the entrée/tasting plates, and mains and dessert can be ordered from the menu. Check out the Grosvenor at www.thegrosvenorperth.com.au/ Expressions of interest will be called for closer to the date, and we hope to see you all there.

Spotlight on 2019 WA Masters Squash Committee – Roger Campbell Roger, our WA Masters committee chairman, is no stranger to most Masters members, and is a familiar face around the tournaments. Roger brings to the position a vast amount of experience in squash administration and organisation.

Over the years Roger has been a great contributor to WA Junior Squash in various roles, and has sat on the WA Squash Board. He has run numerous State Championships, Masters and Juniors, undertaking the role of Tournament Director for the 2007 and 2008 Australian Junior Championships, and he was the Squash Director for the 2007 and Tournament Director for the 2015 Australian Masters Championships, both held here in Perth.

Roger not only contributes richly to the organisation of Masters, but also has a worthy attitude toward squash in general. His constant involvement with the sport signifies his recognition of the various collateral benefits that are part of being involved in an energetic activity, and also the importance of the wider benefits attached to being part of Masters squash, such as belonging to a great community of like-minded people, and the lifelong friendships that come through that.

The commitment Roger has invested in squash in several areas over many years has meant he has freely gifted much of his own precious time to ensure the enjoyment of the many Masters and Juniors players who have benefitted from his work. And Masters players, as a group, greatly appreciate his commitment and contribution. Roger should be extremely proud of all that he has given and achieved over his many years with the WA Squash community. See you all at the WA Masters Hilton Classic in May!
