SAN FRANCISCO - Pac-12 men’s and women’s track and feld student-athletes will compete at the 2015 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of in Eugene, Ore., Thursday- Saturday, June 10-13. The Ducks will be hosting the national meet through the 2021 campaign. Participants in this year’s championships qualifed through competition at the preliminary-round sites in Austin, , and Jacksonville, !Fla., last week. All Pac-12 athletes qualifed through competition at the West Regional in Austin, Texas. In all, 65 men’s and 65 women’s athletes and relay teams will be representing Pac-12 squads at the NCAA Champi- onships. OREGON athletes earned the most number of entries on both the men’s and women’s side with 23 and 20, !respectively, the most of any teams in the country, as well. The Ducks men’s squad looks to defend their NCAA crown from last year, the team’s first since 1984. Ranked fourth in the !nation heading into the competition and with the most number of entries, Oregon looks to make a run at the title again. Four athletes who were individual NCAA champions last year also return to defend their titles, including OREGON’s (javelin) and (), and ARIZONA STATE’s Bryan McBride () and Shelby !Houlihan (1500m). The Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA) announced its regional awards and eight Pac-12 athletes and coaches received recognitions. The Ducks’ Jasmine Todd was voted the West Region’s Track Athlete of the Year and teammate Prandini was tabbed the Field Athlete of the Year. Andy Powell and Curtis Tay- lor were voted the West Region’s Men’s and Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively, and Robert Johnson !was named the Region’s Men’s Coach of the Year. USC took home a couple of west region recognitions, as well. Caryl Smith Gilbert was voted the Region’s Women’s Coach of the Year and sprinter Andre De Grasse was selected the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year. ARIZONA STATE’s !Bryan McBride was named the Region’s Men’s Field Athlete of the Year. For the frst time, the NCAA will be changing its championships format, splitting the men’s and women’s competitions. The men will open the event on Wednesday, June 10 and then fnish up on Friday, June 12. The women’s champi- onship begins on Thursday, June 11 then concludes on Saturday, June 13. PAC-12 HISTORY… Oregon won its frst NCAA men’s title since 1984 last year and the Pac-12’s 46th since 1922. On the women’s side, the most recent team to have won the national championship was Arizona State in 2007 with Con- ference teams winning six, dating back to 1982 when the NCAA began sponsoring women’s championships. Arizona’s Lawi Lalang and Oregon’s Edward Cheserek had recorded two of the fastest times in collegiate history in the 1,500 meter at the Pac-12 Championships a month prior to facing off at the NCAA Championships last year. Lalang prevailed in that race, edging the freshman phenom by just .16 seconds to claim the Conference crown. The pair were pitted against each other in Eugene but at the longer distance of 5,000 me- ters. Lalang won again over Cheserek, but his margin of victory was just by under half a second to claim his second- straight title in the event. Lalang posted a meet-record 13:18.36 besting Cheserek's 13:18.71, which would have also !been a meet record. Both times also would land in the top-10 in Conference history. REGIONAL HONORS… The USTFCCCA announced its all region winners and the Pac-12 was well represented in the !West with coaches and athletes taking home eight of the honors. Four different Pac-12 athletes have posted the nation’s top times or marks, including the top sprinters on both the men’s and women’s side. OREGON’s Jenna Prandini and USC’s Andre De Grasse have recorded the fastest times in the 100 and 200 meters this season, which are also some of the fastest times in Pac-12 history. Prandini’s 10.92 in the 100 meters is a Conference record and the 22.42 she ran in the 200 meters is a top-three performance. !De Grasse’s 9.87 in the 100 meters would have been a league record if it was wind legal. STANFORD’s Jessica Tonn ran 15:18.85 in the 5000 meters this year, which is the second-fastest time in the event in Pac-12 history. OREGON CLAIMS PAC-12 TITLES… For the seventh-consecutive year, the OREGON men and women swept the Pac- 12 Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships which were held at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA. The men’s squad claimed its ninth-straight title, while the women won their seventh in a row. The Duck women won a close competition, scoring a meet-high 185 points while the men scored 152 points. Individual recognition went to UO’s Jasmine Todd who was the Pac-12 Women’s Athlete of the Meet, tallying 35 points. USC’s Andre De Grasse was the !Pac-12 Men’s Athlete of the Meet, scoring 22.5 points for the Trojans. Todd’s 35 points came from a win in the 100 meter and the , a second-place in the long jump, third in the 200 meters and by helping the 4x100-meter relay team place second for 35 points. De Grasse 22.5 points were on the strength of a pair of wins in the 100- and 200-meter races, while also helping the Trojans 4x100-meter relay squad to a win, as well. - more - 2015 NCAA Championships Page 5

The OREGON women held off USC who had the lead after the 200-meter race and only two events left. The Ducks quickly regained the lead after the 5000-meter race, and eventually won, 185-182. It was the closest margin of victory !in the women’s competition since a 2.5-point win by ARIZONA STATE over STANFORD in 2006. On the men’s side, the Trojans also grabbed the lead after the 200-meter but lost the lead again after the Ducks scored 25 points in the 5,000 meters to regain the lead. The Trojans ended the meet with 121 points and WASHINGTON !jumped ahead of UCLA in the fnal event to score 84.50 points, 1.5 points better than the host Bruins. In addition to De Grasse breaking the meet record in the 100 meters that had stood for 19 years, ARIZONA STATE’s Shelby Houlihan also set a new meet record in the 1,500 meters. The women’s 400-meter race was one of the fastest in Pac-12 history as the top-two times ranked in the top-10 all-time. USC also set a meet record in the women’s 4x100 meter relay, a record they had established last year. The Trojan women also scored 34 points in a single event, the 200 !meters, sweeping the 1-3 spots, as well as 5-8. PAC-12 MEET RECORDS FALL… Three records were broken at the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships, two of which had stood for over a decade. Andre De Grasse of USC won the 100-meter race, becoming the frst-ever sprinter run a legal win of under 10 seconds at the distance at the meet. De Grasse took down the old record set by former UCLA Bruin Ato Boldon. Boldon had recorded a 10.03 in 1996. ARIZONA STATE’s Shelby Houlihan broke a 12-year !old meet record in the 1,500 meter. She clocked a 4:11.06, besting for UCLA Bruins’ Lena Nilsson’s time of 4:13.21. Individual to the individual records that were broken, the USC women’s 4x100 team broke its own record set last year !in the event. They ran a 43.10 this year, just a hair better than last year’s 43.21. 2016 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS... The hosts next year’s NCAA Championships, June 8-11, 2016 at in Eugene, Oregon.
