Dear SEPEEG 2019 Attendees,

Welcome to the 45th meeting of the SouthEastern Population Ecology and Evolutionary Genetics (SEPEEG) group meeting hosted by Clemson University at The Outdoor Lab. We are honored to host this year’s group of evolutionary ecologists and population geneticists in a casual meeting that fosters collaborative spirits (and other types of spirits!) and intellectual exchange. If you are a first timer to SEPEEG, know that you have joined an illustrious group of evolutionary biologists and ecologists dating back to the early 1970’s. Among the original founders of the Southeastern Evolutionary Genetics Group (SEEGG) were Wyatt Anderson (University of Georgia), Janis Antonovics (Duke University), Bruce Grant (College of William and Mary), Jim Murray (University of Virginia), David West (Virginia Tech), and Darrell Yardley (Clemson University). The founders wanted a relaxed venue for discussing research ideas and ongoing work in ecological and population genetics and the opportunity for graduate students in the region to interact with and learn from one another. Population Ecology was added to this group in the mid-1980s and the name became SEPEEG. Special thanks go to several faculty, particularly Charlie Baer, Marta Wayne, Dave Hall, Kelly Dyer, Laura Galloway, Butch Brodie III, Amy Lawton-Rauh and Margaret Ptacek, who helped see SEPEEG through some rough years of low attendance in the early 2000’s. We are happy to report that in 2019, SEPEEG is alive and well with more than 140 participants, 40 talks and lightning talks and 50 posters. We hope that you find the weekend stimulating of both mind and spirit. We thank all of this year’s participants for their passion for evolutionary ecology and population genetics and their contributions to the future of these fields. YOU are the next generation of scientists that will lead the discoveries of the future.

And remember, YOU ALL MAKE SEPEEG!
