THE first edition of this work was published in 1893 and met with an unexpected and unprecedented sale, and a second edition was placed upon the market in less than ten months. So much new matter was added that it was found necessary to reset the entire work in smaller type in order to keep the volume within the price at which it was originally placed on the market. It is the first and only book, of which the author has any knowledge, which illustrates and describes modern American tools for the watchmaker and jeweler. The ambitious workman is always in search of knowl- edge, in search of new ideas, new tools and new methods. Patient study, constant practice and ambition are requisite to become pro- ficient in any art. The demand for skilled workmen is constantly increasing, and a person wishing to thoroughly master any art, must be to a certain extent capable of self instruction. To be proficient in any art a man must not be deft of touch alone, but the head must also play its part.

Prousalidis. In addition, I owe special thanks to PhD candidate, D. Spathis, for his support, valuable information and advices that he kindly offered. Last but not least, my utmost thankfulness extends to my family for their patience and full support during my studies. 2 © Copyright by Bakirtzoglou Christos 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 Abstract Humanity by necessity is being forced to reduce its carbon footprint and invest in operations aimed at limiting emissions and improving resource efficiency in order to achieve sustainable growth. Air pollution and climate change are intertwined and they have also started occurring. Ports, coastal cities and their local communities are amongst the most vulnerable to extreme weather conditions resulting from them. The concept of the all‐electric‐ship seems to be the optimal solution from shipping sector. The all‐electric‐ ship design which aims at supporting and promoting energy efficiency, if powered from electricity generated from renewable sources may claim to be a 100% zero‐emission transportation mean.

  • Impacts of Electrification of Automotive Transport in Different OECD Countries
158 Int. J. Transitions and Innovation Systems, Vol. 5, No. 2, 2016 Impacts of electrification of automotive transport in different OECD countries Kimmo Klemola* and Matti Karvonen Cleanfi Oy, Yrjönkatu 21 C, 00100 Helsinki, Finland Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract: This paper evaluates the effects of road transport electrification and its regionally widely differing environmental impacts. Life-cycle assessment is carried out to quantify the environmental impacts of electric cars in all OECD countries with widely different electricity generation mixes. The environmental impacts of internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles are compared. For cars, the life-cycle assessment considers the environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle, from raw material extraction and acquisition, through energy and material production and manufacturing, to use and end-of-life treatment and final disposal. For fuels and electricity, the whole life cycle from cradle to gate is considered. The results show significant differences in the environmental impacts of battery electric vehicles between the countries. Policies to advocate the electrification of road transport differ from country to country, and the still very carbon-intensive electric mixes of most countries make the environmental gains of electric vehicles questionable. Combining technology forecasting and life-cycle assessment tools can provide a foundation for policy planning towards more sustainable automobile transportation. Keywords: life-cycle assessment; LCA; fuel cell electric vehicle; FCEV; electric vehicle; internal combustion engines; forecasting; environmental impacts; policy.
