Help with the low tide issue… Kyl ie Purdie has come to the rescue with the following information for those of us (like me, Ed.!) who are always taken by surprise by the low tides when the ferry doesn't run!

The following information is based on Bar times. Tide times for Coochiemuldo Island are approximately 20 minutes AFTER Brisbane Bar. This table was put together independently of Coochie Island Ferries and on the understanding that any tide under 0.3 MAY cause problems for the Coochiemudlo Island ferry and stop it running for about an hour either side of low water. Other factors such as weather (wind, high pressure systems etc) may lengthen the amount of time the ferry may stop for. If in doubt, please check with your friendly ferry staff. Thanks Kylie!

Coochiemudlo Island Progress Association News

Progress had a meeting with the event management company "Corporate Health Event Management" (C.H.E.M.) and they have agreed in principal to run a major triathlon on Coochie: a first for the Island.

It will be held on the last weekend in November 2012 and will attract 600 competitors plus their support crew of

approx 600.

C.H.E.M. representative Emily walked the island and concluded the island is perfect for a half triathlon: 750m swim, 20k cycle and a 5k run. There is a great deal of organising to be done with sporting grants, police approval and community consultation. I will keep you

up to date with developments.

Rusty Broadband for Coochie...

Redland City Council confirms priority but no date for Island's national broadband connection.

The Australian government has responded to representations from the city's Mayor Melva Hobson on the need for high priority national broadband connection to the Moreton Bay Islands.

Mayor Hobson said the islands have similar characteristics to poorly serviced regional areas and need to be treated as such.

Senator Stephen Conroy has replied acknowledging the priority for high-speed broadband services for those living in isolated areas such as the Moreton Bay Islands.

Confirming it plans a mix of services to the mainland and Bay Islands Senator Conroy said that NBN Co has brought forward plans to connect "disadvantaged Australians to better broadband as soon as possible".

However the Minister gave no specific dates and it remained unclear when the connections to the islands would be completed.

Mayor Hobson said broadband will be a particularly vital part of future economic, social and service opportunities for the SMBI communities and .

"Council will continue to actively lobby the Australian government for the earliest possible high speed broadband connection to the islands." ...Cont'd page 6.

Coochiemudlo Island ~ Island Views Page 4 of 10 Barge Update from Peter Dowling MP… Here we are in October already and I have to ask where has the year gone, we are edging closer to the end of the year and the festive season will be with us before we know it. Unfortunately, as most residents are aware, residents and those travelling from the mainland were hit with disrupted barge services in recent weeks. I was personally in touch with Maritime Safety Queensland over this issue and the owner and operators of the Sirenia and Megamia regarding the interruption to services. Maritime Safety Queensland confirmed that they had inspected the Sirenia and found some issues with the vessel and as some of the issues related to safety, the vessel was ordered to cease operating. The owners are working to resolve the issues to try and ensure the Serenia is again operational as soon as possible. The Megamia was being used as a replacement vessel during this period, but unfortunately on Friday 16 September the Megamia suffered propeller failure and was also not operational. The owners were communicating with customers who were disadvantaged to keep them informed and the Megamia's propeller was promptly repaired and I was pleased to see the Megamia back in action on Monday 19 September. It is extremely unfortunate that when breakdowns occur and services are interrupted, it highlights how vulnerable the residents on Coochie and the SMBI are, when things do go wrong, they always happen at the worst possible time. Services have now returned to the normal schedule and I hope that Coochie residents will have minimal disruptions to future services. Until next month, please remember to ring me if you have any issues that you require my support or pop in to my office for a chat!

Coochiemudlo Island ~ Island Views Page 8 of 10 On Cloud Nine... Are you ready for some serious fun with lots of excitement and an amazing view? Wondering how to get on the seaplane that keeps landing on Coochie's Main Beach on the first Sunday of the month?

Cloud 9 Seaplanes manager and senior pilot, Peter Murray, says his favourite places to fly over are the islands north of the Gold Coast, especially Coochiemudlo Island. “It's like coming back to the country," he says, "The people are all so friendly and the flying is fantastic."

The plane pulls up at about 11am, often after dropping off a couple on a romantic picnic. From the beach the pilot will do whatever flights he has booked and try to fit in others if the time is available until about 3pm.

From $50pp (4 passengers) you can fly over Victoria Point, over Coochiemudlo Island and over the sand mines of North Stradbroke Island. From there you cross the beach, turn again and come back via . Luxury flights ($100pp): these add a fly over then over Dunwich then back over Russell Island. Spot dugong, turtles, stingrays, and Coochie from the air taken by Elly Van Acker dolphins and possibly whales when they are in season. in the Cloud9 Seaplane.

Finally is it safe? The pilot "has a habit of going fishing during scenic flights but he does have over 16,000 water landings under his belt, so you’ll probably get back" Cloud9 says. If you decide to come along be prepared for a different kind of adventure. If the Mackerel are on the pilot is known to drop down, land, and have a few casts so the flight may take longer than you expect! To book call Pete on 0408 186554 Email [email protected] or via www.cloud9seaplanes.com.

On the hammock with Paul Moynagh... What I love about Coochie is... It's a great place for family and community and to be a normal person and not get caught up in all that rat race crap. It's a bit like things were when we were growing up, but better: down to earth, cruisy, cool and fun, plus all the modern things too - internet, solar panels and laptops on the back deck for outdoor movies!

As a child I was... an adventurer, sportsman and spearfisherman.

The question I'm most often asked is... What do you do? And the answer is "It depends!".
