The German–Israeli scholar Gershom Scholem commented on this story that it may be read in two radically different ways. From one We don’t know yet what changes will be recommended as a result of perspective it represents spiritual decay, which is to say that each this ongoing work. We have a sense that our forbearers with the exception of fast days, of course!) understood and were moved by a liturgy with which we struggle to relate. We soldier on, hoping to receive credit for the effort even if the Agudas is doing pretty well nowadays, especially in comparison to goal of really “getting it” remains elusive. We can still find the “place,” many other shuls in this day and age. New families are joining, and our synagogue. We may recognize the tunes of the mysterious membership engagement is growing. We seem to be the shul of choice prayers, but what should it really be all about? How do we embrace for many young families. JOIN THE WOODCHOPPERS On Shabbat afternoons, congregants meet at Agudas Achim for Woodchoppers Talmud Study. Why is it called Woodchoppers?

“Among religious Jews, Talmudic scholars are regarded with the same awe and respect with which secular society regards Nobel laureates. Yet throughout Jewish history, study of the Mishna and Talmud was hardly restricted to an intellectual elite. An old book saved from the millions burned by the Nazis, and now housed at the YIVO library in New York, bears the stamp THE SOCIETY OF WOODCHOPPERS FOR THE STUDY OF MISHNA IN BERDITCHEV. That the men who chopped wood in Berditchev, an arduous job that required no literacy, met regularly to study Jewish law demonstrates the ongoing pervasiveness of study of the Oral Law in the Jewish community.” – Joseph Telushkin

Knowledge of Hebrew/Aramaic is not required and new participants are always welcome to join. Woodchoppers is on hiatus during September and October and will resume November 5. Call the synagogue office for specific meeting times and feel free to speak with Rabbi Levine if you have any questions.

11 RABBI Rabbi Mitch’s BREAKFAST MITCH’S CLUB BREAKFAST CLUB 9:00-10 am – The September 24th session of Rabbi Mitch’s Breakfast Club will focus on how we can continue to build up a Shabbat Community at Agudas Achim in a way that involves individuals at different entry points.
