  • London Chess Classic Day 9 Round-Up
13th December 2015 LONDON CHESS CLASSIC DAY 9 ROUND-UP Yesterday’s round-up predicted it could be a late night at the Olympia Conference Centre on the last day of the London Chess Classic, but little did the fans know they were in for a high intensity 10-hour chess marathon. Magnus Carlsen, winner of the London Chess Classic and of the Grand Chess Tour The final and decisive round had started at the usual 2 pm weekend kick-off time and, for the seventh time in the tournament, there were four draws and one decisive result. Adams-Caruana, Aronian-Vachier Lagrave, Anand-Giri and Nakamura-Topalov were all balanced draws. The one decisive result (which was incidentally also the last game to finish) was crucial as Magnus Carlsen ultimately got the better of Alexander Grischuk. Carlsen was very lucky as Grischuk first missed a promising continuation with 30...Rxg4, then a forced draw, before sacrificing a rook for a non- existent perpetual check. Both players made the same oversight. This last-gasp win enabled Carlsen to join Giri and Vachier-Lagrave in the lead and thus force a 3-way play-off. As stipulated by the official regulations, ‘The two players placed lowest on tiebreak shall contest a two game Rapidplay match at a time limit of Game / 25 mins + 5 secs / move throughout’, which meant Giri and Vachier- Lagrave would have to face off first for the right to challenge Carlsen for tournament victory. In the first game, Giri opted for a Berlin (another one!) with the black pieces and played a perfect game to score an all-important victory.

Unfortunately, the denial of a player to play a game was not the only negative in the story. The action was promoted at the highest level, the player becomes an example who fulfilled his dream to meet the country leader and the message of hate was sent through chess is clear enough. There is a view till now with many supporters, even in official positions, that tolerating these actions, we protect and give the chance to more people to play chess as also more states to support financially our sport. ECU Secretary General Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou But is this our role in chess? When we adjust in silence our rules, we do not the same time justify and these policies? We do not encourage, political leaders or chief priests of any religion or extreme groups to apply more rules for us and promote their hate policies through sports? NEWSLETTER 125 (August 12, 2013) HOANG THANH TRANG - THE 14TH EUROPEAN CHAMPION GM Hoang Thanh Trang (2467) is the new European Champion for 2013! She drew with Viktorija Cmilyte in the last 11th round and won the Championship with 9 points out of maximum 11. The curiosity is that Hoang Trang is the first woman to win both Asian and European Individual Women's Championships. Although Cmilyte had an advantage almost during the whole game, she still didn't manage to win, and with the unfortunate turn of events, she even stayed without the medal, and came 4th. Six players with 8 points tied for the second place, but according to tie-break (Average Rating cut-1) silver medal went to IM Salome Melia (2428) from Georgia, and bronze went to IM Lilit Mkrtchian (2454) from Armenia. Last round brought many exciting games. Monica Socko and Salome Melia played until the last atom of strength was squeezed. Socko was trying to materialize the advantage she had and win the game and the silver medal, but Melia defended well during the whole game and there was nothing more that Socko could do but to finally draw in 150 moves. © Ecuonline.net Page 1 With this draw Socko finished 7th with the worst tie-break among the 6 players.
