Travel along the Jordan River Valley, part of the vast Syrian-African Rift. The Jordan Valley forms part of the larger Jordan Rift Valley. Most tourists visiting the Old City of Jerusalem use the Jaffa Gate when entering by foot. What they don’t realize is during the time of the First and Second Temple there was no Jaffa Gate. Jaffa Gate is a stone portal in the historic walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Explore the Christian and Muslim Quarters of the Old City. The mixed population of Jews, Muslims and Christians until the 1929 Palestine riots. Some 60 Jewish families now live in the Muslim Quarter. In 2007, the Israeli government started funding the construction of The Flowers Gate development plan, the first Jewish settlement inside the Muslim Quarter since 1967.

Every Friday afternoon hundreds of Christians join in a procession through the Old City of Jerusalem, stopping at 14 Stations of the Cross as they identify with the suffering of Jesus on his way to crucifixion. Their route is called the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows). This is also the name of the principal street they follow, a narrow marketplace abustle with traders and shoppers, most likely similar to the scene on the first Good Friday.
