  • Eco-Activism in Doctor Who During the 1970S
Author: Jørgensen, Dolly. Title: A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s Dolly Jørgensen Umeå University In 1972, the editors of a two-year old environmentalist magazine named The Ecologist published a special issue titled A Blueprint for Survival, which subsequently sold over 750,000 copies as a book. This manifesto of the early eco-activist movement lamented the unsustainable industrial way of life that had developed after WWII and proposed a new 'stable society' with minimal ecological destruction, conservation of materials and energy, zero population growth, and a social system that supported individual fulfillment under the first three conditions (Goldsmith et al. 30). Blueprint received tremendous attention in the British press and became a seminal text for the British Green movement (Veldman 227–236). This environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s was substantially different from traditional environmentalists of the early twentieth century who tended to be conservationists interested in wildlife and landscapes. The new environmentalists, whom Meredith Veldman labels eco-activists, "condemned not only environmental degradation but also the society that did the degrading" (210). They combined critiques against pollution with calls for limited population growth and refinement of social systems. Although the early eco-activist movement in Britain petered out politically in the late 1970s (it arose again in the mid-1980s), its radical environmental ideas had begun to permeate society. Vol 3 , At the same time that eco-activists were establishing their agenda, the BBC serial No television drama Doctor Who was enjoying its successful establishment in British 2 popular culture.

Such terms are crucial in fiction, film, and television scripts in guiding audiences in their construction of the relationships among characters. In this thesis, I examine the use of terms of address in episodes of the BBC television drama Doctor Who from the first half of the 1970s. In particular, I look at the role those terms play in fans’ practice of shipping characters. “Shipping,” or theorizing the existence of subtextual romantic relationships between “pairings” of characters, is a common fan practice. I conclude that the shipping choices fans make do not appear to correlate with the use of terms of address between characters.

Back street menageries — somebody is stealing the cast off stuffed creatures. Mr Noggin the taxidermist is carrying them off into the belly of his lorry. Making monsters, reanimating them and filling them with hate and turning them back into the human world from a workshop of filthy creation. The Doctor stabs a badger in the chest urging the flames to catch hold. When he opens the creature up he discovers origami brains with insects huddled inside, feebly twitching antennae as they scramble about the papery walkways of their home. The hornets can take control of human minds as easily as the beasts and can change their size at will. They love creatures with flesh to burrow into, with warmth inside eww that is horrible. Mr Noggin was just working under some petty revenge on human beings for treating animals so badly. All of the animals contain a splinter, a shard of the hive mind. He has put a force shield around Nest Cottage and is keeping the creatures, the hornets docile inside. The Doctor has been fighting the swarm again and again through time. Result: Can you imagine anything more wonderful than tucking up under the duvet and letting tom Baker regale with a story written by Paul Magrs? Magrs descriptions make this a sensual, atmospheric listen; his use of language paints worlds more enchantingly than any number of sound effects.
