For the second year in a row, the WNFR pays a record $10 mil- lion and the barrel racers are running at an amazing $1.1 million. The huge boost in prize money led to 5 barrel racers winning over $100k & 8 barrel racers winning more than $80k at the 2015 WNFR. This was the toughest year in history to make the WNFR in bar- rel racing, in fact it took a record $79,068 just to make the Finals, this was almost $20k more than in 2015. On top of that, world leader Mary Burger became the all time regular season earnings record holder and became the 3rd barrel racer to wear the #1 on her back with her $190,977 in 2016 earnings (others are Charmayne James, 1987, Sherry Cervi, 1995). So it really was a record breaking year in 2016. On that note, Mary Burger will set another record when she runs down the alley Thursday night as being the oldest NFR contestant (either male or female) at 68 yrs old. This year’s crop of WNFR barrel racing qualifiers contain a mix of fresh faces and veterans; from the 6 first time WNFR qualifiers all the way up to Sherry Cervi who qualified for her record tying 19th WNFR (tied with Charmayne James). The horses they all plan to ride show a similar pattern; a mix of up and coming young horses and experienced veterans who have been down that alley so much they know every nook and cranny of the Thomas & Mack. Every year we have fun bringing you a little preview of the Top 15 and pointing out some interesting facts and info about each rider and horse, along with whatever information we feel might affect the race for a World Title. 2016 has been the year of Mary Burger and Mo (Sadiefamous- lastwords)! They won Rodeo Houston to finish out their winter and then went up to Canada in the summer and won Calgary too. They just kept placing everywhere in between on their way to a record breaking regular season haul of $190,977 and the #1 spot in the World. The $75k lead they have on the field going into the finals will definitely give Burger a leg up towards a 2nd world title, her last was in 2006 on Rare Fred. After the parade stick around in downtown Comanche for ice cream, roping, stick horse races, vendor booths and food trucks. The parade and events following the parade are sponsored by the Comanche Chamber of Commerce. Look for the decorated windows and bunting around town. There is window decorating contest all over town that the businesses are participating in.
